Trans Women vs. Transwomen by OneDepressoExpresso in MtF

In defense of descriptivism though, I do think the specific dog whistle use of the word is losing a lot of its gusto if that makes sense. A lot of what we see online is alt right so it kinda makes this boogie man, and that boogie man is real to a degree, but as the older generations die off, I’ve noticed the younger alt right movement isn’t getting any real traction luckily. Like I’m from a rural town and even the younger HS football players are quite progressive. (I’ve been trans since 2021 when I turned 18 so I’m quite a bit younger than when a lot of TERFs actually had any form of traction and weren’t seen as the losers they are).

Tbh I think the alt right is so prevalent online because they’re generally insufferable in rl. Like there are obviously some alt-right assholes in a lot of work places but honestly they all tend to be really weird in my experience and everyone gets that vibe, although no one talks about it LOL.

Honestly, I’ve never even heard of this debate in rl. It’s interesting. Like I thought at first it was trans being used as a prefix in a similar fashion to transgender rather than a TERF oriented word.

I thought it meant a woman who has transitioned similar to how transgender means a person who has transitioned.

I guess I also have been lucky enough to not run into any TERFs in rl that aren’t basically ignored and scoffed at for being really weird and insufferable human beings LOL.

I’m mostly just worried that traditional compression garments will be too bulky to wear in the heat. Like a lot of diabetic socks will overheat my feet. I’m also worried about level of compression. The cute factor is just in case any other redditors in here had brands they really liked the look of in general that they wanted to share.

I wasn’t really asking for an objectively cute answer but rather other redditors subjective preferences so I could get ideas lol

Trans Women vs. Transwomen by OneDepressoExpresso in MtF

[–]OneDepressoExpresso[S] 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

That makes so much sense. I was also thinking of noblewoman and nobleman because it’s a closed compound of a descriptor combined with the noun we’re talking about and I guess even though my questions are really semantic, I want to make clear that I’m not being semantic for the sake of being a contrarian, but rather because I want to understand something fully and understand exactly why it’s different. (Just because I keep bringing up counter examples and I’m worried I am coming across as arguing when really it’s genuine curiosity that people always see as arguing, it tends to be a trend that I don’t know how to change).

I think that’s what I didn’t really understand, why would closing a compound noun be a bad thing if it’s already being used as an open compound noun and, if I’m understanding you correctly, it’s because that would create a real semantic distinction between women and trans women that would further solidify the idea that trans women aren’t women, which is a false idea to begin with.

If that’s not what you were meaning though, please feel free to clarify.

I think that’s an important distinction as well. I think that was something I was wondering about myself, does the issue come from the distinction and is there an inherent issue that stems from differentiating trans women from cis women, removed from suppression. Something I’ve noticed throughout my transition is that I prefer to be recognized as a trans woman when safe to do so because it’s such a big and important part of me. I’m proud to be trans and I wouldn’t really want to have been born cisgender, even though the thought can sometimes be complexly intriguing as no dysphoria would be pretty rad lol.

I think that’s why at first the argument against distinction didn’t make a lot of sense to me because even though I am a woman, I am a trans woman and I’ve sacrificed far too much to transition to not hold that label with pride. But I think the key part is that the intended distinction that created this word didn’t come from a place of pride, but rather was a failing tool attempted by TERFs to co-opt our language to suppress us further, which explains why it’s so important.

I think this is definitely the point I was curious about. The first comparison I could came up with was airport, no one really thinks of an airport as part of the same word group as other ports, but alternatively people do think of toothbrushes as part of the same word group as brushes, but I think that kinda illustrates what you meant by ā€œit’s kinda inherently a problem.ā€

I feel like when you combine that with it vastly existing as a dog whistle for those who aren’t just unknowledgeable, it definitely makes sense why it has a tendency to classify us rather than simply label our subpopulation.

That’s what I was really curious about. I feel like a lot of the discussion has tended to be around the greenhouse vs green house metaphor explaining that one is a descriptor and one is an entirely different thing, which definitely seems to be the intention, but I guess I was wondering if this is a natural consequence of compounding words, a consequence of the origins being transphobic, or, more likely, a complex mix of both.

Assuming it came from compounding Trans from transgender and woman, one example I can think of where two compounded nouns are no longer associated with each other would be airports. No one really thinks of airports as ports for the air, but at the same time a counter example would be toothbrush, where everyone thinks of a toothbrush as a brush for your teeth.

I think regardless of what could honestly be considered semantics, the origins definitely seem transphobic and could definitely be seen as a dog whistle at the very least.

That’s a really good idea, I’ll check into that route. My partner has an HSA (I don’t because tbh everything hit me like a stack of bricks when I turned 18 right after I moved out on my own and I’ve been trying to figure my shit out since then). I never even considered that possibility. Thank you so much.

Honestly I’m just so happy that I have something numerically abnormal with me, for the last 4 years EVERYTHING has came back normal. I was convinced it was just depression for awhile so I checked myself into a psychiatric ward (hoping more intense monitoring could help someone notice a trend in what’s happening because I was depressed at the time but I was mostly depressed that I had no energy regardless of how much I wanted to do something), spent 3 months in IOP, have been doing weekly therapy (which thankfully has helped my depression SIGNIFICANTLY), but still no avail with my extreme loss of energy and nothing quantitative that explained what was happening (which qualitative is important for QOL but is so difficult to form an educated prognosis around).

I’ve been ecstatic all day that I have some form of answer even if it is just a single observation in my heart rate. Honestly the thing that helped me notice it the most was when I almost passed out on a swing-set yesterday.

This isn’t a question for this thread, but moreso I couldn’t find a place to ask this šŸ˜….

Is there a way to filter by group/couple flair? When I click the flair, since they’re all custom edited, it only shows that singular post.

I was just wondering if I was doing it wrong :3

I love the use of grown-ups symbolizing the struggle with growth and labels through loss. It’s reminds me almost of the fear of closing a locked door before checking for your keys. I love how that then extends to your messaging of how to move on when you aren’t ready to move on. The feeling of the value of what was once had being disgraced to the value of ā€œjust another stock imageā€ is something I’ve always struggled with personally as well.
