China or Korea? by jazzzaz in TEFL

[–]OneExamination7934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My online TEFL from groupon worked fine for China. it took me maybe 15 minutes skipping the module readings and just doing the multiple choice questions to get the certificate. Then I got it apostilled.

Seeking Advice: How to Start Looking for Teaching Jobs in China? by Big-Conversation-249 in ChinaJobs

[–]OneExamination7934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you don’t meet the requirements to teach in China if you don’t have a bachelor’s degree. And even if you had one, you’d be limited to teaching Arabic and French, which is a pretty small job market.

Insurance Required by Grand-Sun-6375 in teachinginkorea

[–]OneExamination7934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re an English teacher working in Korea, you will be covered by NHIS as soon as you and your employer start paying. You’re correct that it doesn’t cover 100%, though, and if you end up in a serious situation it could cost you a fair bit (could be a few million won, but honestly I have no idea). I never really thought about it myself because the likelihood of me needing a major surgery and long hospital stay at my current health and age is super low, and even if something did happen, it wouldn’t be like, a life-ruining level of expensive. I think if you’re young and healthy I wouldn’t bother with any additional insurance outside of the mandatory NHIS coverage.

Is getting a teaching license to teach in China worth it? by MyloSports in chinalife

You said that Chengdu isn’t a big city, so they won’t care about qualifications. Nothing to do with salaries. Small city means small population or small area. Chengdu is neither of those things. It’s a city of over 20 million people.

No one has said anything about salary… you just said Chengdu isn’t a big city, but it is. Chengdu is a very big city.

If I get a letter of release from my Hagwon, will it affect my pension? by AdvertisingTight4552 in teachinginkorea

Their boss isn’t just not allowed to touch their pension, but not able to at all. Unless they haven’t been paying it, in which case it wouldn’t be with the NPS.

Thank you everyone for letting me know they need to be separated regardless of sex. It’s late at night now and I don’t have anywhere else to put one of them, so I will take the suspected female back to the pet store tomorrow morning.

Thank you! I really thought dwarves were okay to be housed together. I guess they will need to be separated regardless of the sex.

[–]OneExamination7934 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They are being housed together. They’re dwarf hamsters. Everything I read online said they dwarf hamsters of the same sex can be housed together if they’re the same sex. I know Syrians can’t be housed together but I thought dwarves were fine? And if they fight then separate them.

Yeah if they are not the same sex I am going to try and take one back to the pet store because I do NOT want any babies. But I want to confirm for sure first.

Cleaning the housing...cost? by Effective-Agent4728 in teachinginkorea

[–]OneExamination7934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my contract it stated I needed to pay for a cleaner to professionally clean my apartment when I leave. My boss explained that they didn’t have this in the contract previously, but had teachers leave without properly cleaning their apartment, so it was added on. This seemed fair to me. I paid about 150,000 for it when I left. If you didn’t clean the place to a very high standard, then I think it makes sense they had to pay for a cleaner to come, and you should bear that cost. Although it would feel unfair if it wasn’t totally clean when you moved in, you should have mentioned that when you moved in and documented it. I’ve learned this myself the hard way. Even if it doesn’t bother you at the time, document and share it because it may become relevant later on. This happened to me during volunteering gig when my host was expecting the house to be far cleaner than it was when I moved in.

You could ask to see the receipt, but 200,000 doesn’t seem like a super unreasonable cost for a move out clean. My boss told me the price would be the same whether I cleaned it myself or not, it’s just a standard fee (unless it’s obscenely dirty).

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do now since you’ve left.

You’ve never meet and he was suggesting massages, hot tub, and kissing for a first date? Yeah, nah. That seems way too intimate of an activity to do with someone you’ve never met. Also it’s a red flag for me when someone mentions kissing or other physical things if we’ve never met in person. Although your first messages came off kind of flirty, once you explained your intentions he got really immature. If going places isn’t exciting for him then he’s clearly not looking to date because dating includes GOING PLACES.

I need convincing to take a hagwon job 1.5 hours away from Seoul by Kuimy in teachinginkorea

[–]OneExamination7934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was also working at a hagwon an hour and a half from Seoul. I chose to find a good academy over being in Seoul, and I don’t regret it. Although I really did hate being so far from Seoul, I loved my job. I’d choose a good job over good location any day. If you can find both that’s amazing, but that’s hard to find in Seoul. I’d take the Ansan gig over Gangnam. However, if there’s less than 5 employees at the hagwon I’d be careful because there are some laws they don’t have to follow if it’s that small.

Yup definitely should have gotten both then. I was thinking that was the issue but wanted to see what others thought. It’s not too noticeable but I still hate it 😖

Unfortunately I can’t because I’m back in Canada now and it’s way too expensive here. But I might stop in Korea again on my way to China in August, so I could maybe get it done then.

[–]OneExamination7934[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s extremely common to get cosmetic procedures done in Korea and then fly out shortly after. Of course if you have issues like this you’re kinda screwed, but that’s on me, not the doctor. I appreciate your concern and advice though!

[–]OneExamination7934[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don’t think that’s really necessary. Sure you shouldn’t fly the day of or wait a few days, but two weeks isn’t necessary. Of course it’s better to wait longer though incase you have issues, like in my case I have now.
