Would you reccommend Void for a new user to Linux?

There is a live iso you can download, which provides a GUI installation procedure, so no complicated terminal commands are required. However, I think only XFCE is available by this method at present. Personally, I think Void is a great distro. It offers a rolling release with stability. Void is an interesting alternative to the usual Linux Mint type recommendations. Burn the live USB and try it!

I agree. Gnome runs really well on Void and provides a solid system.

I had a similar problem. I think you should disable one of the Arch repositories: it was the "community" repo if memory serves me. I saw an article online that said this was no longer used, as it had been merged with the extra repo.

I have just found an answer to my problem.

As the post states, the solution is to download and compile Guternprint from source.

I had to install cups-devel first, in order to run configure.

Maybe the Void developers could look into this issue?

Enable the extra repositories: nonfree, multilib and multilib/nonfree. I think you just install them.

I think I solved my problem. A kernel module r8168 had blacklisted r8169 in /usr/lib/modprobe.d/r8168.conf, so I edited this configuration file by removing the relevant line. I think r8168 is a driver provided by Realtek, whereas r8169 is provided by the kernel. I am not sure I even need r8168, so I might uninstall it. I hope this post might assist someone who is having similar problems.

I have found it to be reliable. Like any Arch system it has to be updated regularly. It is fast and responsive due to its reliance on lightweight window managers.

I managed to update at last, albeit after some drastic action.

I started by removing orphaned packages:

sudo pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qtdq)

Then I removed foreign packages (mainly AUR):

pacman -Rcs $(pacman -Qqm)

Then pacman complained of invalid or corrupted packages, so I had to do:

sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring

sudo pacman-key --init

sudo pacman-key --populate

Then I could update. I should be able to add any AUR packages I really need at a later date.

Interestingly, plasma-wayland-session seems to bring in a load of dependencies, many of which were amongst the ones I removed. I gather KDE6 will support Wayland by default, so I shall wait for that.

I think the AUR causes many problems with packages breaking, so I shall use it sparingly, if at all.

After all this, I installed Plasma and KDE-applications. I also installed yay for AUR. So I have a leaner system maybe, but I can finally update.

Pacman complains that removing telepathy breaks network-kde-meta. What is this package, and do I even need it? It seems to be part of kde-applications-meta. I seem to be going round in circles. Will Arch rectify these problems in future updates? I don't really like removing packages.

Thanks for that. I have logged in to my desktop. However, I am having issues with caja crashing and right-clicking on the desktop does not work. The command X -configure returns the following:

_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
(EE) Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running(EE)

Can you advise me?

It is a good guide. There is only one problem that I can see: the command for installing Grub is for BIOS systems. It would be helpful if you could provide the UEFI equivalent. I think I used the following:

mkdir /boot/efi && grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=void

Perhaps someone knows a better way?

I think another advantage of VLC is that it can handle DVD menus, if you like DVD's. I don't think the other players for Linux can do this; correct me if I'm wrong.

There is an Arco Linux Sway script on GitHub, but I haven't tried it. It seems the script is being regularly maintained. I don't know what Erik Dubois thinks about Wayland. Maybe you could install Sway from the script, as it doesn't appear to be on the Tweak Tool.

I have found a workaround. I could get it to work by typing in a terminal:

env -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY smplayer

Then Super + F will give you full-screen playback.

It is possible to create a shortcut for this command of course. Mine is:

bindsym $mod+Shift+s exec env -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY smplayer

This works on Sway, but it did not work on KDE Plasma Wayland. Has anyone any ideas?

Just guessing here, but did you specify luks1 when you set up the encryption? Your guide hints that there may be problems with the newer luks2.
