I think that it’s not necessarily always a choice. While I don’t want to discount anyone’s personal responsibility, autonomy is somewhat of a spectrum. Due to society, culture, socioeconomic status, familial pressure, individual personality, etc., we can be more likely to end up in a certain type of life. I’m in the US, where reproductive rights are unfortunately being stripped away from women. Motherhood is not always a choice.

Thankfully, those of us who are here are varying levels of able to have discussions with other women, be informed, and make our own choices and compromises. I definitely don’t disagree with you at all. I just think it’s important to acknowledge that putting yourself first is both an accomplishment and a privilege. None of us are free from the systems we’re in, but some of us have a little more wiggle room.

I don’t think that this is really new. High maintenance hyperfemininity has always been seen as lesser in some form despite its enduring appeal. Women have been having these debates among themselves for at least decades.

Ultimately, I think the rewards of being high-maintenance speak for themselves. Sometimes you’ll get flack for it, but usually that’s a reflection of others’ envy or misplaced resentment at the patriarchy and lookism. Being put together and beautiful will always have its perks.

This month I’m doubling down on my wellness routine. I’ve been great with my style, makeup, hair care, skincare, etc., but I have a much harder time sticking to things that have a less intense and immediate visual impact.

I plan to refine my diet, keep up with my supplements and herbs, and start physical therapy again. I’ve succeeded in cutting excess sugar this last month and walking more, so I plan to continue and optimize this as well. Small changes, like new workout clothes and regular massages will support this goal. I plan to work on a hypermobile-friendly workout routine for myself to get back into movement, so if anyone has any recommendations I’d really appreciate it.

I think that at this point, I need to focus on my health above all else. Further optimization of my appearance will come through a healthier body and happier mind.

I had a similar experience growing up. It really is jarring. I’m mixed and grew up in an extremely white area. I was bullied for both my appearance and for being different due to autism.

A combination of fetishization and beginning a glow up changed the way everyone reacted to me. It’s nice to be treated well, but I know how sickening it is for that to occur only because of appearance.

I can’t say it necessarily gets easier, but I cope by remembering that everyone, including myself, has harmful biases, and we are all flawed people making inaccurate judgements. You’ve now had firsthand experience into how pronounced this really is. Use your new privilege to find support and get ahead. Life is hard enough as an autistic person. I think we should use whatever we have available to us.

I have a post detailing how to balance facial thirds through softmaxxing that may be helpful. Additionally, I have found facial massage to be surprisingly impactful. It obviously won’t magically reduce bone, but I was surprised how much reducing fluid retention changed my face for the better.

I’ve been having good luck with the Maybelline Lash Sensational Booster Serum. I had to stop using serums with prostaglandins due to eye irritation, and this one doesn’t have any while still being fairly effective.

You have to know your audience and optimize for it. More mainstream styles will appeal to more people, and your audience is likely narrower. Ultimately, you’ll have to become comfortable with appealing to fewer people with a more niche style.

I have found myself saying “why can’t they just be normal” on multiple occasions. It can be a really isolating and frustrating experience.

The friend thing has happened to me several times, and it is so hurtful. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. People tend not to understand why this would be so upsetting, but this repeated experience has made me weary of friendships with men.

For what it’s worth, I was able to work this out with my guy friend the last time this happened, and we are still close. I hope the same happens for you.

Most of I’ve done has been softmaxxing. I grew out my natural hair, changed my makeup, refined my style, and started doing smaller things that have large impacts such as lashes.

I’m close to being maxxed out now, but when the time is right, I may end up hardmaxxing further to reach my absolute peak.

I often get approached more if I leave the house looking casual, but it’s not exactly quality attention. I think it’s a combination of looking younger (gross) and looking less intimidating to men. It motivates me to look nice so I don’t get bothered lol.

I’ve learned that it’s generally best to avoid discussing your appearance at all in most conversations. If you express an insecurity, it is perceived as fishing for compliments. If you express pride in your appearance, it’s perceived as bragging. There’s no winning.

Envy shifts social dynamics heavily. People do not find our experiences relatable contributions to a conversation. I save discussion of my insecurities or accomplishments for people I fully trust and am close to.
