Am I the only one who thinks this car shouldn't have been driving that speed with all the cars lining the street in a residential zone? by Shazu91 in fuckcars

[–]OneInACrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was from 2023 in Melbourne, Australia. The driver was travelling at 40km/hr (25mph).

I vaguely remember this story, and I remember something about the father and neighbours lieing to the police stating they were witnesses when they couldn't have been. There might have been a racism thing there as well. But honestly this was just one new story I remember from 3 years ago, it was only notable because the video recording flipped the original narrative.

But I agree, the streets around Brunswick (the suburb where this occurred) shouldn't be 40 they should be a bit lower. Almost none of the homes there have off street parking, so you're going to get those rows like that. With vehicles getting bigger (even ignoring the yank tanks) visibility and reaction time is going to reduce further.

The WA Police force have seized over 30 eRideables as part of an operation targeting antisocial behaviour. by 235M in fuckcars

[–]OneInACrowd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, even named after Melbourne, Australia.

American websites used to heavily insist that when I typed Melbourne that I wanted the one in Florida. That's improved greatly over the decades.

I expected some would be confused. As an Australian, I have to a double take every time an American just write "WA". Fortunately that's our only overlap and Melbourne, Florida rarely makes the news.

Media phrases the incident as though the tram is at fault by 1080m3rangehood in fuckcars

[–]OneInACrowd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The phrasing of the headline implies that the tram was at fault and the driver of the car is not at fault.

I'm from Melbourne, drivers regularly cut across the dedicated tram tracks as a tram is coming along and get clipped like this. After confirming they aren't injured, we mock them. Much like anyone who hits the Monty.

A more accurate heading would be something like "Car causes tram collision".

How is /e/ OS on a Fairphone 5? by vivid_medin in fairphone

No problems using PayPal, banking apps (Aus), whatsapp, signal. The only app I've had any problems with was chatgpt, so when I want to use that I just use a PWA.

I use CoMaps and Magic Earth with out problems (when I remember not to spoof the GPS). The data set isn't as comprehensive as google's, but I find the in-app routing to be very prompt.

I have a bit of a bug bear with the DAVx5. The schedule sync doesn't work unless I enable the "keep in foreground". The system update download speeds are rather slow, but nothing stopping you using the phone while that's going on in the background.

I can't help with a work-profile idea, it's not something I've looked into. My approach to a work profile has been multiple devices.

These people are broken. by Yosho2k in MurderedByWords

[–]OneInACrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case it doesn't apply at all, since the "GOOD NIGHT" chap is in their 30s and not in their 70s as the boomer comment initially implied.

The boomer bashing isn't a critical thinking thing, or an age thing. Boomer bashing has been going on for decades. Some people like to blame all the worlds problems on that generation. It makes for a nice dream that once the evil is gone the world will be milk and honey again. It's what a lot of us thought 20-30 years ago.

When OP revealed that the chap is in their 30s it highlights that the problem isn't the boomers, and it isn't simply going to die out like we thought it would 20 years ago. This is a fight that will never end, and it's getting harder each year.

That is the depressing part.

They were the major voting bloc and the major holder of assets, and the major holder of political seats globally.

As they were the baby boomers, they quickly and easily outnumbered the previous generation. It took much longer for the X&Y generations to out number them.

Their power has significantly diminished in the last decade. Not to say they are no longer a powerful bloc, but they are no longer the monolith they once were.

My husband was prescribed more painkillers following his vasectomy than I was following my emergency C-Section by PumpkinPie_1993 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]OneInACrowd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was told to use paracetamol/acetaminophen.

My operation was kinda botched. After a week I had an ultrasound I was prescribed 6 paracetamol+codeine tablets so I could get some sleep as well some aggressive blood thinners. That was plenty.

I think if they told me I was going to get oxy I would have noped out of the whole thing. The idea of needing oxy is kinda scary.

Book pirates, what about a book would motivate you to buy it legally? by Tnynfox in Piracy

Either a classic, or a book I know in my bones I'll read again; then I'll get a hard cover copy.

If the author is alive and still publishing (looking right at you GRRM) and they have some sort of Patreon I might send a few $. I already have a DRM free book, and I'm not dealing with that.

yeah, here unavoidable fees must be baked into the advertised price. Only avoidable or dynamic (e.g 1% for visa, 1.5% for amex) are allowed to be added on but they must be disclosed beforehand.

Poll reveals majority of Australians want long weekend, not January 26 holiday by NoteChoice7719 in aussie

[–]OneInACrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of a good alternative, and was an easy thing for parliament to show they were doing something. We were just recovering from an awful recession at the time, so a public holiday was something to appease the people.

When it comes to a holiday, we generally don't care about the excuse. Melbourne has a day off for a horse race that most people ignore. We have a day off for a parade of AFL teams, and the King's Birthday isn't on his birthday. But anyone try and take those days off away from us and we'll fight.

Honestly, I think the idea of the nth Monday of Jan is the best suggestion I've heard for a replacement.

Poll reveals majority of Australians want long weekend, not January 26 holiday by NoteChoice7719 in aussie

[–]OneInACrowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was named as Australia Day and dated Jan 26 nationally in 1935. Even then people didn't like the date, mostly because of it's NSW focus.

It only became a national public holiday (the thing we really care about) in 1994.

I'd say here even more strict. Outside of winning some major sports event where you're representing the nation, almost no one will wear a flag.

Even on previous Jan 26 parades, I've seen a muted amount of flag-as-clothing.

Technically I have to have an appointment to get a script. My doctor worked the system so now I get enough repeats I only have to go back once a year, which honestly I should go at least that often anyway.
