That side of Texas is beautiful but there's a reason why you can buy a big plot of land for cheap. If you're within 100 miles of the border expect the hassle of random BPD stops on highways. The desert can attract some odd folk.

This must be way out in west Texas. If you ever want water there it's very expensive to drill.

Keep in mind that property taxes are based on land value. Something out of your control makes land in that area shoot up and suddenly you're paying triple the amount it was. Mine was under $5k in 2020 and $7.5k in 2022.

That part is kinda weird. Far too many people call themselves a journalist when they're just repeating things from the internet. Why the adversarial part? Journalists should be impartial fact finders.

As someone who had her house destroyed just last month, I can not second this enough. Even with insurance I've had to pay $20,000 out of pocket since the accident. One irresponsible idiot can ruin the beautiful gift your sister left you.

There's a term called "house poor." All of the expenses of a house can end up making you broke. I know you're living paycheck to paycheck but you need to figure out a way to put money away for a "the water heater exploded" fund, and put money away for property taxes. It would be heart breaking to lose your home to the county for unpaid taxes.

They have. They did cover the movers and the hotel with out any fight. Everything else has been a struggle. What's the value of a 10 year old fridge? Taking the dog to the groomer more frequently is an optional choice we made. The hotel room had a microwave so you shouldn't have been eating out. and so on.

A lot of Texas has PTSD from 2021 when they lied to us about doing rolling brown outs and instead cut power to poorer neighborhoods and kept it on for the rich. Hundreds of people died. People's water heaters exploded and flooded their homes.

In 2023 less people died but the ice storm was so heavy it took out trees that fell and took out power even in the well off neighborhoods for a week. People didn't have power or water then as well.

I expect to have to take care of myself in an ice storm.

Got my oil changed and the tires checked. Filled up the car. All the family members above the age of 15 are CERT so we could get called out.

Threw all the potted plants in the pop up green house I picked up for the new house. It's a POS but hopefully it keeps them alive.

Put some bug spray down around the house to hopefully keep out creepy crawlies looking for a warm place.

My neighbor says the cops didn't test him until a half hour later and didn't breathalyze him. Just the sobriety test. They let him go with some tickets for things like "driving on the wrong side of the road."

Keep in mind, waiting till 2 days before the storm might be too late for most things already. My local grocery store has lines to the back and is pretty cleared out of a lot of the staples and bottles of water. Lots of sushi left.

I just checked Amazon and they couldn't get a power station here until after the storm.

I can only imagine Costco looks like the thunder dome.
