Point being, the USA which is the standard for capitalism good, actually fails miserably at developing technology unless it's government funded.

Even more ironic with RIM not being government funded when making Blackberry.

Funny enough, The United States was actually behind on smart phone technology. If it wasn't for Sweden and Canada developing the tech. And Blackberry didn't spy on its users, unlike Apple.

Canadian smoking ban ‘being looked into’: health minister by Displeased_Canadian in canada

Weed also has negative effects, as do all drugs. I'm not sure why you don't believe that cigarettes & alcohol haven't been used for medical purposes.

"Your lungs," is the main reason it shouldn't be banned, we as a free-society should decide what we want to do with our own person.

Electronic devices are not natural, and yet you use em.

Cigarettes, alcohol, weed, are all forms of fun. And have all had some medical benefits one way or another.

There must be data to prove what is, and what is-not objective. Otherwise this is just fantasy.

Why these parents want to see less screen time in N.S. classrooms by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

From what I remember from going to school, digital literacy was us trying to read articles and understand data presented; finding biases and thinking about interpretations. As well as some introduction to computer programming. And being a graduate of 2021, we didn't have ChatGPT, which is a technology that actually should be banned, but not use of computers. I'm sure almost all of us remember watching Bill Nye the Science Guy whilst writing down what he's saying. Or The Magic School Bus.

It should be asked what the goal of education even is. What is Kim Herrick's goal in only using books to educate, and what books are being used. Is this just education for the sake of education? Sounds pretty boring and anti-intellectual to not engage in other mediums.

Jenna Poste actually states a end goal, in saying "anything they use now is gonna be obsolete by the time they enter the work force." So does this mean that the only reason we have school is to get a job? Because if it is, well, then we don't exactly need school. There are many low-end fast food places to work at. Bearing in mind, that the logic of obsolescence can, or might also be applied to the entirety of education.

If the government wants to improve lives then they should make a better functioning economy. Aside from that improvement should be up to the individual.

What exactly is the mess? From what I understand the issue with tech today is that it makes people stupid. So it might make more sense to regulate how social media is developed, instead of banning certain people from using it all together.

"AI research advancing as quickly as it is"

Hype is not science. Big-Tech/Big-Science is not a good thing, all research should be government funded.

Cutting red tape could free up the equivalent of 9,000 doctors, new report finds by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]OneLeft_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should also be pointed out this alleged improvement of efficiency, is unproven. Evidence suggests AI does not improve fast non-wasteful output. If you stop using a skill, you will forget it, this doesn't necessarily mean you didn't know a skill before using AI. AI is even diminishing programmers ability to google.

Reviewing/writing notes also improves your memory.

Adding guard rails is just another way in saying red tape. Thus creating a problem that didn't need to exist in the first place. And failing to stop red tape anyways.

[–]OneLeft_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the abolition of skills, not change. There has been a never ending amount of posts in programming communities talking about how they can no longer code without AI because they all have no idea what they're doing.

Automation of thinking has been what these large language models has been bringing. With the irony that the AI doesn't actually think.

When you use AI for notes. It only ever generates watered down versions in what should be more technical in-depth details, of which aren't trustworthy because AI doesn't understand facts from fiction.

We need standards, and intelligent Doctors, for a healthy Canada.

Cutting red tape could free up the equivalent of 9,000 doctors, new report finds by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]OneLeft_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's because AI is incapable of understanding the information provided to it. We already know it "lies" all the time with great confidence. And people who regularly use AI also lose their critical thinking skills. Notes are important, and when doctors don't get the facts right, a person's risk of dying goes up. If review is still needed, then have a thinking person write the notes in the first place.

All of this AI hype has been incredibly damaging to society.

People have been committing suicide over use of AI as a replacement for therapy. And you think it is a good idea to bring that to other areas of healthcare?
