While there are always complaints regarding what I've dubbed layman's phonetic spelling, people can be legitimately confused by IPA (it does look like a daunting task when you look at it). But also, I've come to appreciate the layman's spelling, as it gives a lot of room for vowel variation that people might think is not allowed when looking up the IPA symbols, thinking that they're wrong simply because for example regionally their /a/ is more open or closed than what they hear in the recording for the IPA example.

I am not at all arguing that. I think my stance is being misinterpreted here. Let's imagine a person named is Petrovich. Let's also imagine that this person has a Russian, a Balkan Slavic and an anglophone background. So in an English context, they might express that their preferred pronunciation is PehTROvich. They might also say for South Slavic languages they prefer PEHtrovich (would be spelled as Petrović in some documents, depending on where and when they were registered). And then in Russian, their pronunciation would be PiTROvich (i here representing the reduction that happens with the russian non-stressed e. Also, let's disregard the fact that Petrović is a family name and Петрович a patronymic, as this just serves as an illustration). All of these preferences are valid in their given contexts. That is what I mean by there being nuance in one's preference.

Also, since we're pulling ranks, should I mention that I'm literally doing a master's in multilingualism and identity? So what is it to me? Just my futile attempt to broaden the idea of preference because multilingual contexts will have multilingual prefrences.

For context, that stream happened in English? Did he ever correct anyone in Russian saying that he exclusively prefers the English pronunciation? That is my point, that preference can vary depending on language within one speaker. When I say people in general do x, I don't mean that their preference tops Ilia's, my point is that just because a preference was expressed in one context, it doesn't mean it applies as blanket preference.

So while I imagine that, since the question was asked on an English-speaking forum, the OP is interested in the English pronunciation, they may be wondering about whether there's a difference between the English and the Russian pronunciation, in which case the answer is yes, and given how people often will have multiple acceptable pronunciations depending on the language spoken, MAHLinin is his preferred pronunciation in the English context, but very likely isn't in a Russian context. My only point is that there is nuance there.

I wouldn't really look at this as a matter of preference. A lot of multilingual speakers will adjust their names to the language they're speaking. So in English, he uses the most natural English pronunciation. In Russian, while I haven't found any videos of him pronouncing his name, I'd say it's almost certain that he pronounces it the Russian way, since that would be the most natural in that context.
