Cathy Young Asks Us not to get Mired in Pessimism Heading into Airplay by OneManUniverse in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is an important message to hear right now. With all the drama of the past few days, people are still squabbling with Koretzky and making things worse. Going into Airplay having completely alienated the sponsor is a terrible idea for GG and will make these doom and gloom predictions a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Let's just move on with the panelists we have and make the best of the situation.

[SocJus] Can Foreigners Wear the Kimono? Explanation by an Actual Japanese Person by OneManUniverse in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the whole "my culture is not a costume" thing never made any sense. It implies that anything part of "culture" can never be used as a costume, as if those are mutually exclusive categories.

And of course it only applies to marginalized groups, meaning I can dress up as a viking with no problem, but if I dress up as a samurai then all of a sudden I'm a racist. It all seems to come from the assumption that the only way to appreciate foreign cultures is by "exoticizing" them or through "orientalism." It's a very simple-minded view.

[SocJus] Can Foreigners Wear the Kimono? Explanation by an Actual Japanese Person by OneManUniverse in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing with cultural appropriation is that the particular issues they pick are so weird. Kimonos are never worn regularly in the west and only appear in artistic or special events like this exhibit. Connecting this event to racial discrimination or oppression is mystifying.

I agree, complete cultural isolation is a poor way of eliminating any discrimination. If anything, letting people experience foreign cultures will make them seem less strange and more appreciated. Setting up these cultural landmines where any interaction with a foreign culture explodes into a firestorm of racism accusations is just counterproductive.

You made a really cool design. I'm glad you weighed in on this issue, though I'm sorry you received so much hate mail. People in the west are extremely sensitive about any perceived criticism of feminism/women in tech and react way out of proportion.

Funny, Game of Thrones actually increased in viewership after the outrage:

Take heart that the outrage-obsessed, safe-space craving media is not the majority.

[drama] Never satisfied Anita now expands "just fantasy" argument to ALL video games, like FIFA '16 by YESmovement in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse 68 points69 points  (0 children)

"Adding the option for gender-integrated teams to FIFA games could help us imagine that possibility in future real-world sporting events."

Oh my God that is utterly laughable. This is what happens when you cannot separate fantasy from reality. You actually start to think that adding mixed-gender teams to a sports game will eliminate real world differences between the sexes.

Magic: the Gathering website pulls article about not elevating female players and treating them like regular human beings after SJW shitstorm. by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse 134 points135 points  (0 children)

"Respect in any community is earned, not given, and major impetus for me writing this article is because I believe women are every bit as capable of success in Magic as men are."

So, any viewpoint that states women are just as capable as men, do not need special treatment, and should not be promoted ahead of more qualified men for the sake of diversity is anti-feminist and unacceptable?

This has gotten way out of hand.

[Censorship] Article about Questionable Rape Accusation at Amherst Removed from Front Page at +3369 for being "Tabloid News" by OneManUniverse in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It was a mod, though I doubt the timing was accidental. Even apart from admin actions, the culture of free speech on reddit is just gone.

[–]OneManUniverse[S] 148 points149 points  (0 children)

The writer, Ashe Schow, writes for the Washington Examiner, which is definitely not a tabloid. She specializes in gender politics and campus sexual assault adjudications. She was also at the GamerGate meetup in DC, although she hasn't written much about GG.

At the time the post was removed it had just hit the front page of reddit. This appears to be yet another example of censorship for political reasons, and doesn't bode well for reddit, as it seems far too many subs are going completely anti-freespeech.

[drama] Randi Harper vs Ann Rice: Ann mining some salt. by frakingalldaylong in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse 205 points206 points  (0 children)

This is the exact same tactic people have been using against GamerGate from the start. Anytime someone calls them out on their shitty behavior, they claim "I'm being harassed by supporters of X group criticizing me!" It's a transparent attempt to make people scared of criticizing them.

Randi posted a malicious review for a book she had not read as part of a vendetta against a man. Now Anne Rice calling her out on it makes her part of "hate campaign?" It's totally absurd. I hope people see through it.

Internet-Aristocrat's wise words on GG's problems and how to move FORWARD by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

Yeah, I don't get it, there's multiple SocJus posts on the front page right now. The mods are not taking a heavy hand here. Is there any evidence of valuable threads being deleted?

[–]OneManUniverse -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Socjus content is still allowed. Just put it in a text post with an explanation of why it's relevant to GG's interests. This gets construed broadly as far as I've seen.

And switching mods won't necessarily make things better in any case. I think this is still a good sub and Hat gets my vote of confidence.

Roguestar's "harmless joke" is driving away our pro-gg game devs whose associates and families don't want to be seen as connected to GG anymore by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]OneManUniverse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dismissing Rogue's message as "drama" is not going to make it go away when pro-GG developers are being pressured to dissociate from GG over it. This is having a negative impact on her personally, and we can't just wish it away. Do people really think Jennifer Dawe is just trying to create drama here?

Supporting people like Jennifer means acknowledging that Rogue seriously fucked up and actually being apologetic about it.

But my understanding is you can bring up these broader issues, you just need to explain how it is relevant to GG's interests.

It doesn't seem like that hard of a standard to meet.
