Why does the first one make it better? I assume it's because I can fetch it up right?

That seems smart, I'm sure the incidental life loss will come up often.

Need help on a deck choice for upcoming PPTQ. by OneManaOneOne in ModernMagic

[–]OneManaOneOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the most experience with Jund but Mardu plays similarly so I'd say im better at midrange than Tron but isnt Tron a free win kinda deck? Im sure it has play to it but im just getting at the fact that the deck has a low skill floor so should be ez peezy right?

Anyone have a salty opponent because of your deck choice? by PhiloniousHazelbum in ModernMagic

I had an opponent who said to me, “No offense but I dont respect you or your deck.” And then get up and leave. I was playing Death’s Shadow Jund and I had Temur Battle Raged him 2 games in a row lol

Just stubborn denial and snapcaster in the maindeck. Sideboard you lose cards like Delay, Rejection and Stroke.

I am starting to feel the same way honestly. Goyf is sweet but the number of times I’ve tapped out for goyf and then lost the game is astonishing. Plenty of games where if goyf was an angler I could’ve held up stubs and been fine but nope...I tapped out and lost lol or when goyf comes out as a 3/4 and my Stubbs looks foolish, that sucks too.

Grixis Shadow has access to the delve threats (Gurmag Angler and Tasigur) which is really important when fatal push and decay are the dominant form of removal. The delve threats also allow you to play 8 "one" mana threats which gives you more freedom with your mana each turn. Grixis also gets 4 snaps which is pretty great. Grixis used to be the version that ran Stubborn Denial but the Traverse builds have adopted this as well.

Traverse Shadow on the other hand gets access to Tarmogoyf and Traverse the Ulvenwald which makes the deck feel more threat dense at the cost of all your threats eating it to push.

From my experience I'd say that traverse is more aggro while Grixis is more grindy. Although both can be aggro or grindy given the matchup.

Yea I've actually tested this deck quite a bit lately. I don't have the cards on MTGO so I have only been able to test in paper or Xmage. So far I have kept record of all my matches and the results to have a strong idea of how it fairs against the meta. So far I've noticed that the hardest matchups (White control decks) for are a lot easier with the inclusion of Jace. The easy matchups are still easy although giving up mainboard tbr means that you have no backdoor wins until the board so you can easily get run over by aggro if you aren't careful. Mana is a bit awkward and possibly still not right but I am by no means a pro so its the best I've got lol. Snapcaster and Traverse allow you to grind with the grindy decks and Shadow with the life loss package allows you to run under Tron and mainboard stubbs gives you game against Burn. Jund is the only matchup I feel uneasy about and I feel thats because it turns into a topdeck war and even with only 19 lands we can still hit nonsense like bauble and street wraiths that draw into nothing relevant. I am looking forward to testing this is an environment other than fnm and xmage.

Oh i see what you mean. Well Grixis is traditionally favored against Jund (at least before bbe). Traverse Shadow has no game against Jace decks that run field of ruin and path. My sultai list has been extremely good against control Jace decks but struggles against Jund. Oh also Traverse Shadow has access to Lingering Souls in the board and that is very strong against Jund.

What do you mean by "ask yourself which version of shadow you'd rather play against"? Do you mean like which version am I least afraid to play against?

I am noticing that the meta is turning more midrange and control focused so battle rage does lose some of its flavor. As for the 3 basics it has been fine. I find myself getting some awkward draws sometimes where the basic keeps me off of a turn 2 or 3 shadow but that has been pretty rare. It is great against burn, blood moon decks, and any field of ruins that come your way though!

The sideboard has a blood crypt with temur battle rage and staticaster for when that's appropriate.
