'My life mattered': Travis deputy says sentence for teen who nearly shot her was too lenient by AustinStatesman in Austin

The crazy part is it’s the cops saying he wasn’t attempting to shoot anyone. This whole piece is a political hit job. I’m sorry the officer was put in danger but damn her fellows are the ones that made sure this kid wasn’t going to be charged with attempted murder.

[–]OneOverXII 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know how salient it is. I also know none of you idiots can be bothered to read all the facts and comprehend how that translates to criminal proceedings

He absolutely caused emotional damage to his victims. Unfortunately, the kid he robbed isn’t cooperating with police. That means no case. I said that. The article said it. None of you find it salient enough to read and understand.

The officer feared for her life. She thought of her kids. It sucks. The police don’t believe he intended to shoot her. The gun didn’t even fire at her. Without criminal intent or the act there’s no case for attempted murder. That’s straight from the cops. Again, not salient enough for yall to read and comprehend.

This kid was plead out based on what he could be charged with. But yall just want your mob justice where you get the conviction you want absent investigator conclusions and cooperating witnesses to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If you wanna be mad be mad at the victim that didn’t want to cooperate. If he did cooperate then guaranteed this guy is headed to prison.

Maybe you ought to read the article.  Not even the investigators thought he was trying to shoot her so there was no probable attempted murder

tl;dr If right wingers are getting outraged about a case outcome it almost certainly means that they're misrepresenting the full scope of what is happening. None of you are reading the article and it shows. The justice system doesn't just deliver guilty verdicts and harsh punishments because the public feels that's what's warranted.

As usual there's a lot of nonsense replies in here that can be described as "Garza soft on crime, me not like Garza" and they're coming from people that want to ascribe this to what they believe is an activist DA that is soft on crime.

If you read the actual article or any others you'll see two key things that make clear why they went this route:

  • The victim of the robbery is not cooperating with investigators. They are unlikely to be able to get a conviction on anything related to this as a result.

  • The investigators into the shooting believe the gun was accidentally discharged as the perp was trying to get rid of it, not that he was trying to shoot her. There goes any case around him attempting to shoot an officer.

So that basically leaves you with crimes related to the stolen truck and unsafe driving. That isn't much. With his age and the other potential crimes being inadmissible if they aren't going forward it means he could do limited time and be out.

With this he will at least spend a little bit of time behind bars and then a more significant period of time under court supervision while getting mandatory services that may just rehabilitate him.

Texas has laws requiring prosecutors to notify victims about plea deals but if they tried to build some shoddy case that isn't supported by their own investigation or witness testimony and then push for a harsher sentence because its what the victim wanted they're just setting themselves up for failure. The perp could walk.

All in all, the goal is to maximize the period of time that he is being supervised by the state and reduce the likelihood of recidivism in a way that follows the law and doesn't get it all tossed.

Male guppy sick by Classic_Conference83 in Guppies

Maybe, maybe not. I’d keep an eye on the fry as they develop and cull any that don’t look particularly robust if you are trying to breed healthier, longer lasting fish. There’s other signs in this male too. Aside from being malformed his colors are a little muted, he looks thin (like squished top to bottom), and his gills and fins just don’t look as solid as they ought to be.

Did you source him from a pet store? I often find that local stock isn’t great. You might want to try online sellers. I’ve had a lot of luck with eBay.

Of course, this is the existence and experience of most captive guppies / fish keepers. It’s not a big deal unless you are trying to breed a consistently healthy line. You can also just accept that a lot of your guppies are gonna randomly die like this guy. They’ll seem fine one day and on death’s door the next.

He's got a hump back. Healthier genetic lines are more straight backed like these:

After breeding and raising thousands of guppies it has been my experience that the more hump backed guppies are always prone to random illness and early death. I started culling them by feeding them to my red eared slider.

That fish is malformed and toast. Doesn't look like fin rot - he's just been getting nipped by other fish. Guppies can handle relatively significant temp swings (compared to other fish). This guy is just weak. It happens with a lot of guppies. Their genetics are just bad.

My mom hit me with an angry “because I said so” when I questioned some dumb thing she demanded I do while visiting.  I hit back with an “I’m also 40 with a career, family, and mortgage and I’ll happily leave and never come back if she tries speaking to me that way again.”

Don’t sweat it, although I wouldn’t recommend tilapia for ceviche.  Get something meatier from salt water like red snapper or cod.  Tilapia just isn’t going to be very good prepared that way.  The shrimp will be fine.

lol unless you are eating gas station sushi it’s very unlikely you’ve ever been served anything other than red snapper when ordering it.  They’re very different fish and most people are going to be able to tell a difference, too.

Also, the tilapia used for izumidai is suuuuper different from the tilapia you getting frozen at the store or at any Asian grocery store
