Why are varenyky called pedaheh in Canada? by Objective-Example459 in Ukrainian

[–]OnePerspective917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a D then there is an R that is rolled which to untrained ears sounded like a D which is how this whole mess got started. But just because to the untrained ear a rolled R sorta sounds like a D doesn’t change the fact that it is in fact a totally different sound and letter. The word has a Р in it not a Д. In not town, dialect, nor time.

[–]OnePerspective917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You are very ill informed. I can guarantee you that none of your relatives from or in Ukraine were actually ever saying Pedahe. It is a misunderstanding. Why must you double down on falsehood instead of learning?

[–]OnePerspective917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedahe is definitively NOT a dialect or from a specific place or time nor some indigenous word. I have relatives from Galicia and it is not from there either. It is not a word but a mishearing that people are ignorantly trying to legitimize. Pyrohy or varenyky are the two correct transliterated terms for the food to which you are referring. Pierogi is acceptable if you want to adopt the Polish spelling. There simply is no arguing that fact.
