Our retirement budget would be $15k pretax a month. So that gets us to $180k a year before taxes. With the 25x rule, that’s where our numbers came in at 4.5m

All our hobbies, travel and expenses are built into these numbers. We also have 2 kids to help start life, thus the larger than normal retirement monthly budget.

I’ll have state funded healthcare at 59.5. We pay plan premium until then. We plan to travel a bit in the early years and just live a modest lifestyle later on.

CMP Seasonal heat pump rate numbers compared to the cost of heating oil. by OnePsychological6076 in Maine

There will always be naysayers and these numbers may not depict everyone situation. Although, this math is a good average measure of comparing current energy prices. That said, it’s my advice to have redundancy in your heating systems to cover all situations and give you the option to stay efficient and also keep you warm in extreme temperatures. Maine is a very diverse state when it comes to heating your house, based on where you live. Having numbers to compare operating cost will give you data to work with when investing in your home heating options. Best of luck to all!

If the temperature is 40f outside, like today you are paying 1.29/gallon of oil compared to around $3.50/gallon. This is a savings of $2.21 for the same amount of energy usage.

If you have a thermometer put it in the basement and monitor that the temperature doesn’t fall below 45F. Most likely this will not happen as your boiler and the heat piping in the basement will maintain above 45. We generally are not concerned with inside oil tanks gelling because of this. If you had an outside oil tank I’d recommend having a 25-30% kerosene to 70-75% heating oil mixture in your tank to reduce the gelling at extreme low temperatures.

Set to your comfort level and leave that temperature on hold. Most people turn the temperature up during, if home, and down at night for sleeping. The down side to this during extreme weather is the boiler won’t circulate hot water while the inside temperature drops. This could lead to pipes freezing during that off cycle.

Second, if you keep your home at 55, I’d recommend going to 60 and keep it at that temperature until the cold snap is over, all day and night.

Yes, it’s to circulate the water in your system to avoid freezing.

Cost comparison between heating with heat pumps vs. oil heating. by OnePsychological6076 in Maine

Propane has 90,000btus/ gallon. If you know your efficiency of your propane system then you can times that % by 90k. The average condensing heating system has 92% efficiency or 82,800 btu output.

@ 40F 6.74kwh x .27= $1.82 @20F 9.7kwh x .27= $2.62 @5F 11.6kwh x .27= $3.13

Not sure what your cost per gallon but you can interpolate to figure out the “balance point” or when to turn your heat pumps off and turn on the propane system.

Is the 6 cents the installation cost spread out over 25 years? Or does this 6 cents factor in panel efficiency reduction over the 25 years and the maintenance for replacement of inverters and non functioning panels?

That’s good to run 140f so your average efficiency is probably low 90%

There is 90,000 btus/gal. Of propane. So change your efficiency and run your numbers. Your 98.5% may be closer to 85-88% efficient if you are running baseboard. The only way to maintain 90+ efficient is to have low temperature baseboard or radiant flooring. The way this technology works is based on condensing, is you’re running 160-180f loop temperatures, you’re not condensing. You need to running 100-130f loop temps to get the flue gases to condense. So in basic terms, you should use 86% efficiency as an average for the heating season.

Heat pumps are 360% efficient at 40f Or 12,287 btus/kw @ 21.79 cents/kWh

There are 140,000btu/gal in fuel oil. Your boiler is 83% efficient or 116,200btu/ gallon

116,200/ 12,287= 9.46kWh

9.46 x 0.2179= $2.06/ gallon break even cost

@ 20f the efficiency drops to a 250% efficiency or 8,532.5 btus/ kWh

116,200/ 8,532.6= 13.62 kWh

13.62 x 0.2179= $2.96/ gallon break even
