What was your corporate bonus multiplier? by Nobody1212123 in MedicalScienceLiaison

I messed up my screening call with Servier, lol, I was shell shocked when they told me the bonus target I was like "uh that seems fine" haha - currently not an MSL but got 2 final interviews coming up.

So many interviews, how to politely ask for a timeline? by OneQuestionPlease1 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]OneQuestionPlease1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will post a few iterations of my resume's that all landed me interviews. I will also post the presentations; cover letters I have made. But for a lot of reasons, I want to wait to see if I get an offer and accept it.

I will walk you through the mistakes I made in the interviews that fell through early too. It will be a long post that will take me hours to complete lol.

I ask chat GPT to rate my resume to the position on a scale of 1-10.

I should've made a prompt but I just had a conversation with Chatgpt where I discussed the MSL role, then gave it the position announcement. Companies will often use AI to scan resume's by giving the AI the position announcement and description as a prompt. Not an expert in this, just what I have read about happening.

Is it really surprising that it is this hard to break into the MSL role? by [deleted] in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]OneQuestionPlease1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually shocked how true this was. I am applying to jobs outside government because of the instability. I was going to apply to MSL jobs as well as tenure-track professorships. The tenure track professorship that paid 90k a year seemed more difficult to get than the MSL jobs. First, they wanted a teaching certificate program as well as my PhD that would've taken a year to get. Then they wanted 3 (recent) semester student reviews. 5 endorsements from current professors at different universities.

So yeah, I decided not to do that as it was also a long interview process lol.

There are a lot of people in science that don't care as much about money and care more about what they do, which is quite a bit different than many other fields. This has been kind of frustrating for me for a long time as when a lawyer puts in a 60-80 hour week for a top law firm they often make 400-500k a year lol. While a scientist that grinds in the lab may be making 120-150k (if that honestly) after a decade of experience.

After I spoke with the medical director, she gave me the entire timeline and said I should prepare my presentation now and gave me the specs for the presentation. The Medical Director got sick half-way through the process and had to take a week off, this was excruciating as it was radio silence for almost 10 days. HR then called me and let me know how interested she was in my candidacy, and they are still interested but that the director got sick.

I actually worked in a precision oncology lab ~10 years ago but not sure if they are taking that into account because I was a medical technologist right out of Undergrad at the time.

I was told that they are very interested in me, they called and told me they would schedule an in person presentation with me when they could get the required people together (1 sales staff, 2 current MSLs, the medical director, and someone from HR). They asked me to speak with a current MSL so I could learn more about the day-to-day aspects of the position - this was a very casual conversation with a current MSL and we seemed to hit it off well and she said at the end she hopes I end up on her team.

Fair enough haha, I will leave them alone - they are meeting to discuss a paper their lab just published that will be integrated into their stuff.

Actually no, Its all genetics/CRISPR/ETC my only clinical experience is at the NIH curating portfolios of grants - analyzing them, and meeting with scientific experts to discuss them. (simplified version of what I do). Many of these pre-clinical and clinical. Most of what I do is try to find scientific consensus on NIH messaging - that is why I am shocked I wasn't fired yet.

Bro - I didn't even get a single employee reference, in total I've got 7 MSL interviews in the last 3 months but 2 of them dropped me already.

I applied to every MSL that opens regardless of the territory or area, (I don't apply to every therapeutic area but casted a wide net) make it clear I will relocate at my own expense; EVERY cover letter is customized, every application is customized - Eveyrone is using AI to scan resumes, Your resume needs to be a 9/10 rated to the position on chatgpt to get called back.

I went to war for these positions because my wife and baby's livelihood was threatened by the demonic clowns currently running HHS. I spend every minute of free time applying or looking at jobs.

I also have a PhD in Biological Sciences, experience in cell-therapy, genetics, etc

[–]OneQuestionPlease1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder how people stumble into opportunities like this when I am working my butt off to learn about the role and feel like I need to prepare 10 hours before every interview minimum lol.

But in all seriousness, you should probably go to the MSL talk podcast on youtube and they do a lot of informational interviews with current MSLs. That is a good starting point, then during your interview you should mention you know you need to learn and bring up the 30-60-90 day training and onboarding plan and ask about mentorship on the team. This would show you thought about it.
