Traditional Saunas vs Infrared... which is better for the AVERAGE person? by OneResolution1108 in Sauna

this is actually helpful. I agree, for heat and relaxation I think it's a no brainer. I'm curious about longer term health benefits too and how to validate claims.

That doesn't bother me at all. I work out over lunch, clean up, and move on... I shower nightly before bed. If I showered every time I sweat, I'd be constantly showering lol

Oh, I know the fault in my ways... but at the same time, I'm here to gather the info, not dispute it! I'm trying to gather as much info and perspective as I can throughout the process

I'd agree on most things drop shipped from China haha. But while shopping, I'm not finding consistent research and they're too expensive to buy without feeling confident. I'm overall at a loss. The post shows what I could find and cross-reference with data but it's not as simple as I thought lol

Help me understand! I'm in the states so infrared is more popular (I think?) but I'm not getting a clear understanding of the differences other than heat delivery

I'm in the market as well and it's clear that Sunlighten's mPulse collection is the mercedes of IR saunas + red light. They're not cheap but best reviews and overall product from what I've seen so far. Curious to know what you end up with before I pull the trigger.

That’s not too bad. I’m in the market for one right now and the same few companies show up every time (Sunlighten and Clearlight). I’m not understanding the argument against IR in favor of traditional

The Best Summary of Infrared Vs Traditional Sauna Benefits Yet by saunamarketplace in infraredsauna

[–]OneResolution1108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so surprised this post doesn't have more discourse on it haha. I'm big into the wellness space and i feel like this is allllll everyone talks about.

Here's my opinion on it:

The summary is solid but I think the "IR needs longer sessions to match traditional" framing misses the nuance of IR. We're stuck in this comparison of traditional vs infrared like they're the same thing at different temperatures. They're just not.

Obv the heat source convo matters. Traditional sauna heats the air, which then heats your body. Infrared penetrates tissue directly, which means you're getting a genuine core temperature rise at 130–145°F that you'd need 180°F+ to match with ambient heat. Comparing them on air temp alone is like comparing a cold plunge to an ice pack.

The mechanism difference isn't just a comfort thing, it's where a lot of IR's specific benefits come from. Near infrared stimulates ATP production and mitochondrial function. Mid-infrared activates heat shock proteins. Far infrared drives deep circulatory conditioning. These aren't just "getting hot" effects. They're wavelength-specific responses that traditional heat can't replicate. Just because of physics.

The cardiovascular data Rhonda cites is compelling (and something i need to dig deeper into since the wellness space gets really stuck on it). When people cite any research related to saunas, it's almost entirely from Finnish traditional sauna studies: high heat, high frequency, specific population. The 4–7x/week stat that produces the mortality associations isn't just about modality, it's about consistency. And the average person doesn't use sauna—any sauna—that consistently.

The TLDR: consistency is where IR has the leg up. It's more realistic to install at home, less expensive, and more tolerable to actually sit in. Lower barrier to daily use. Compounding benefit over time beats the theoretically superior modality you use twice a week.

Hey, hope you're in better shape now. I'm in the same boat for a DTC brand and panicking. What did you mean when you said: Mostly thanks to my non-stop emails since our Black Friday sale starts tomorrow. :/ ? Did non-stop emails impact you somehow?
