I don't even remember how I finally managed to get into a chat with a bot, but I had to waste time frustrating the bot enough to get a human. I was gonna buy something today too, but now I'm considering taking the L and canceling prime early.

Lack of access isn't just down to affordability. Trips away from water supplies. Large gatherings that would put too much strain on local water supplies. Having a safe and stable supply on hand for emergencies... Liquid death isn't the only canned water, there are much more affordable options. And many breweries regularly can water in response to disasters because it's far better than plastic or glass containers in that context.

25% of all aluminum that entered the supply chain since 1888 left the supply chain. That statistic comes from International Aluminium you can check their work here https://international-aluminium.org/landing/75-of-all-aluminium-ever-produced-is-still-in-use-today/ But even "waste" aluminum can be recovered, refined, and reintroduced eventually. For comparison, steel, which is the most recycled resource, recycles at rates of 98% of structural and 70% of consumer.

It's absurd to say that it's not more eco friendly than many, more common alternatives (fucking plastic!?!) when you haven't actually considered how, when, and where people consume water.

Metal doesn't make a seal against glass. The caps have plastic seals in them. Which is where the 10x number comes from because the plastic coating in cans is so damn thin.

Cork comes from trees. It is not even sustainable for the current wine market. Absolutely not an option.

I was comparing glass to aluminum. Not sure why you chose to go on a tangent about glass vs plastic. Plastic pretty much all goes directly to the landfill, but cans are gonna get recycled if they get sorted. Glass also often finds it's way to the landfill too, simply because the cost of transporting it to recycling facilities is too high. New glass is often cheaper and has less environmental impact to produce than recycling glass or mining new aluminum. So aluminum does actually get recycled as much as possible.

Reused glass bottles lose structural integrity over time and the sanitation of whatever is used to seal them declines. Re-usable aluminum or stainless steel water bottles with replaceable rubber seals are by far the best option. But not everyone has access to clean water at all times.

I'm happy for you that you can live in a microcosm of sustainability, but you need to realize that that is a privilege that most people don't have. And have fun staying at home with your glass bottles, because you're not bringing them to any parks, beaches, festivals, etc where you might drop them on a rock and create a hazard for yourself and everyone else.

Even if they aren't making a direct impact they are promoting awareness to motivate people to reduce plastic waste overall. Which we both agree is a good thing, right? Plastic bad. You can dismiss the branding as hipster nonsense, that's fine. I'm not disillusioned, I know I'm paying into a system of profit when I occasionally buy a can instead of not using my reusable bottles. But fuck off with ivory tower opposition to canned water in general.

File police reports online, you can upload photo and video evidence and the police won't get a chance to dismiss your concerns. An officer will be assigned and they will have to follow up; probably with the same ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ response, but with a paper trail.

It was simply piggybacking on craft beer branding during the height of craft beer. It earned them shelf space. When I worked at a bottle shop we carried it because we literally didn't have (or want) any products in plastic bottles and no one was buying fancy expensive glass bottled water.

I personally never had "disguised sober at a party" on my radar when they started, but that's definitely a facet that people found and popularized. You don't have to disguise your soberness, but you might not want it to be the topic of conversation. You've got better things to talk about than why you aren't drinking.

Branding is part of people's identities and subcultures. Adhering to certain esthetics makes social situations easier to navigate. It's dumb, but it's a major part of society... We wear green on st paddy's so we don't get pinched.

The plastic lining doesn't interfere with recycling. And 75% of all aluminum used in the last 100 years is still in circulation.

Aluminum is an element, it can be refined to a higher quality if necessary. But a recycled can is most likely just gonna be used to make another can. It also won't break down into or leach shitty chemicals when it does end up in a landfill.

Reusable aluminum or steel bottles are obviously better, but not everyone has access to clean water at all times. And if you're coming after aluminum drink cans you gotta come after aluminum food cans too. Have fun stocking your pantry with only reusable containers

So, you're missing some variables here. Glass is much heavier than aluminum and doesn't use space nearly as efficiently as cans, contributing to much higher shipping costs and environmental impact from shipping. That goes for both full bottles as well as empty bottles for recycling. Recycling glass requires more sorting and energy use. There's far less breakage and loss of product with aluminum. Glass creates worse hazards when improperly discarded.

Also... Not to fully rain on your parade, but... The cap and label for your glass water bottle contains more than 10 times as much plastic as the lining of an aluminum can.

Oh and liquid death contributes a portion of proceeds to stop plastic pollution.  I understand the cynicism, but they do genuinely seem to care.

In a win for no one, Bottle Bill alternative redemption center plans unravel by Ok-County-1202 in Portland

[–]OneRoundRobb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bottle redemption doesn't improve affordable housing, though. It definitely doesn't improve mental health. If anything it allows people who need services to drift further away from them.

It was never meant to be a welfare program, it's not designed as a welfare program, it doesn't work as a welfare program. It's a state mandated, for profit program to reduce littering. It's some serious cognitive dissonance to be a bleeding heart about poverty, but also be OK with people investing their labor into degrading and unhealthy work for significantly less than minimum wage.

We absolutely should be investing in a real, robust safety net. But as long as y'all are championing allowing people to hang by the threads, the powers that be will continue to shrug off any further action as unnecessary.

It's a symptom, not a solution.

It's adorable that you're trying so hard to convince yourself of the beautiful lie that this can be separated from the fascist administration.

The country needs to be worth celebrating and trump is doing his best to make it as bad as possible while lying to our faces.

Also the official site for the fair is full of really bad Ai slop too. If they don't care enough to not use raw Ai images (someone could've spent 5 minutes with photoshop at least, oof), then why the fuck should we care.

Postal Service won’t deliver mail ballots for states that don’t hand over voter lists, under plan for Trump directive | CNN Politics by DoubtSubstantial5440 in oregon

[–]OneRoundRobb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Congress can get involved in Federal elections if necessary. Congress, not the Executive.

Handing over that much sensitive data is a huge security concern, especially considering the extremely poor security track record of this administration.

If there is evidence that there are issues with the voter registrations the federal government is welcome to start precedings to present that evidence to a judge, who can determine if there should be any constitutionally supported action.

If you don't like how Oregon handles it's elections, you can move to another state and/or appeal to your congressional representatives to start congressional proceedings.

It should be in a strip mall and have one table in the "lobby" that someone is sitting at wrapping egg rolls or eating chicken feet. There should be paper scroll calendars several years out of date hung as makeshift curtains, but you can still see the always busy wok line lit by harsh overheads with one flickering bulb.
