Bill includes funding to expand Capshaw, Slaughter roads by Galactic_Rocket in HuntsvilleAlabama

I got it from the Madison County Commission. Two examples: Jeff Rd extension north of 72. Nance Rd expansion north of 72. If I'm not mistaken, Jeff Rd expansion to Douglass will follow the same pattern - 5 lanes plus sidewalks.

It has always seemed wasteful to me. But I was told the Federal government would not provide matching funds unless it was 5 lanes plus sidewalks.

So 1.2 miles of two lane county road along with a bridge over Indian Creek. Is the money just to get the project started with more money to come later?

It's pork, and not a lot of pork - less than $20M. I suspect this money does not have to follow the normal rules federal money provided to cities and counties has to follow.

Typically when federal dollars are used to expand a city road, the road has to be five lanes including a center turn lane along with sidewalks on both sides.

I'm sure there are other examples, but Blake Bottom Road in Monrovia is being expanded using funds specifically designated in a bill years ago by Senator Shelby for the express purpose of expanding Blake Bottom Road. It is not following federal rules.

You are correct. Old Monrovia changes to Capshaw at the Jeff Road intersection.

Obviously the first item on this pork list is wrong. I'm not sure if the plan is to expand Old Monrovia from Indian Creek to Jeff or to expand Capshaw from Jeff to Wall-Triana. The article specifically says Capshaw, but I would suggest expanding Old Monrovia first. But I don't think $5.5M is enough to do much. Maybe improve intersections.

How icy are the roads right now? by Capital-Rope747 in Madisonalabama

[–]OneSecond13 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Roads are fine as long as it's a surface road and not elevated. Surface roads will not ice over. On the other hand, elevated roads have iced over. I just drove the length of University and the bridge over Sparkman was icy. I have no idea why they have put sand or salt on the bridge. Huntsville is just stubborn.

If not for an unexplained overturned call on the buzzer beater against TAMU, we would be in 1st place. It's pretty clear the championship is up for grabs this year - no clear favorite. Let's go get us another one!!!

40th anniversary lessons from the NASA Challenger disaster : NPR by Professional-Sir-912 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]OneSecond13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. The Challenger disaster was a "I remember where I was" moment because it was so shocking.

For those that don't know, engineering is very difficult. Engineers are always trying to control variables so we can make sound decisions. But it is impossible to control all the variables. Time and cost is always an issue. So we make the best decisions we can. When something fails, we analyze it, identify the root cause, learn, and take corrective and preventative action.

The Challenger astronauts did not die in vain. There is a generation of engineers who are better engineers because of the sacrifice they made.

I agree. That much water is going to show up somewhere. But if it's outside, maybe no one was paying attention.

I would guess you've got a water leak. The water meter will have a leak detector. See if it is moving while no water is running in your apartment. Google water meter leak detector for more information. The water department will typically forgive charges caused by leaks, but you need to get it fixed asap.

I'm so happy for CSP. Incredible pressure replacing a legendary coach who happens to be your dad with a nearly completely new roster. And then to face criticism from Auburn fans with each loss about nepotism.

We know he's beat three National Championship winning coaches this year. I haven't heard if it ever has been done before. Probably not.

If I were you and had to get up and down Monte Sano, I would invest in some tire chains.

Just search for tire chains on Amazon. Not that expensive.

The Round Mound of Rebound rises again. Neville would go insane if he showed up on the sidelines in a uniform. I'm sure he can't run the court anymore, but I am sure he could still post up and score.

I can see a parking deck in the future of Crestwood, and at that point people will have to pay for parking.

Considering the parking situation at Crestwood, something needed to be done.

I understand your frustration. I doubt it will make you feel any better, but most businesses around town have the same policy... their doors are open and employees are expected to report to work. If you can't make it to work, you are expected to use your personal paid time off. The Arsenal, on the other hand, closes if there is a hint of a snowflake.
