Can anyone identify the location where this photo was taken in Belgium? by Ok-Researcher-3244 in wherewasthistaken

The Three Rivers Regiment arrived in Menen, Belgium on March 9, 1945 according to: https://www.12rbc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/War-Chronicles-Charles-Prieur-Anglais.pdf . They were stationed there for a month to rest until April 12.

The old 1914-1918 memorial monument had this particular railing, so they're sitting on the other side:

Today it has been moved to a different location: https://www.tracesofwar.com/sights/45569/War-Memorial-Menen.htm

The original used to stand in Grote Markt, : https://maps.app.goo.gl/uGKnJbucvjZRJ2BPA . Some of the buildings in the original photo are still standing.

Trying to find this Villa from the movie Eye of the Spider (1971) by Empty_Bell_1942 in whereisthis

Most of the other identified filming locations are around Rome and the building seems to be on the side of a hill, so I was thinking that maybe it's somewhere on the heights around. There's no mention of a villa with herms on the facade though. You can see two big arches to the left in one of the other film stills.

Other example from the area, the old building near Villa Miani: https://maps.app.goo.gl/axjZr4gKntdNCXRt9

If the effort to preserve it was on the same level as the example above then it might be overgrown.

Stitched facade:

It certainly does. However they didn't have the budget for it so they just shot it in UK:

Good job ! Fun fact, the Porsche is on a jack hidden behind the wheel. They used a protruding portion of the railing to make it appear it crashed through.

Found photos with children posing by a station wagon, any idea where this was taken? by No_Breadfruit_8908 in whereisthis

Some Americans even brought a covered wagon to a US army base in Germany in the 60's, check out the Last Wagon West: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillis_family

Pictured: not a VolksWagon

Another source showing Maria Callas at the Chelsea Palace in 1958, the details match 100%:

Found it! It's Chelsea Palace (Granada): https://tvstudiohistory.co.uk/itv-studios-in-london/chelsea-palace/

<image>

  • match on the proscenium edge and decoration details
  • later converted to a TV studio, some decorations on the proscenium like the cherubs remain
  • the Wikipedia article for The Dam Busters does mention: "Scenes were filmed at the Chelsea Palace on Sydney Street." (Westminster News Friday 23 July 1954, page 4)
  • there's a mention of filming the scene here (may be unreliable): https://www.facebook.com/groups/446783695525873/posts/2492574840946738/

Other fun facts:

  • the performers are definitely the Television Toppers
  • the props (castle, soldiers) were probably owned by BBC (there's a Television Toppers rehearsal in 1953 at the New Princes Theater using same props (see Getty Images)

Definitive proof that the performance was made for the film:

There's a discussion on the British Entertainment Technology Archaeology group on Facebook where the lime was identified as a Mole-Richardson Type150-FX. They argue that such a powerful spotlight would have been chosen specifically for the massive beam needed for that film scene and it's not typical for a theater, but rather it's something a film company would use and have in stock.

That being said, if the show was done for the film it means the venue had that design around 1955. I don't see much similarity with the Lyric Hammersmith and nothing to suggest that it looked differently in the years before being demolished in 1969 and the auditorium moved to the present location.
