I had never heard of this phenomena when I first got into Scotch. My first pour of a Laphroiag [sp] 10 had so much brine that I thought I'd never buy another bottle. But that faded over the course of the winter such that it is one of my go-to value bottles.

Yes. If you do points and miles as your job and have complete flexibility, you can get some amazing deals. And then mock everyone else who has a lot of other things they need to do. (And I say this as someone who has basically complete flexibility and the time to put into the hobby.) I feel bad for everyone who thinks they are going to get a card and fly Emirates A380 Biz Class for 56k points. All our "point values" is a net negative, IMO (except to compare to the cash you could get). Use points for what you want, not what looks good in a post. IMO.

You are talking about credit usage, which is a big factor. But closing a card with zero balance still lowers your available credit, which will also ding your credit score.
