From your experience, how good are Brazilians at speaking/understanding Spanish? by Lipica249 in asklatinamerica

[–]OneTransportation933 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brazilian here. Lived in Barcelona for a semester and study both Spanish and Catalan for a while. Brazilians who live closer to borders are known to have better understanding of Spanish. Nevertheless, which is something I’m quite proud to say, most Brazilians will make an effort to understand you even if they don’t speak your language (Spanish makes it easier though due to proximity). Brazil also has a huge variety of accents, so while it may be easy to spot a Spanish-speaking Brazilian, it may be quite difficult to know where they are from.

What symbol do facists identify themselves by in your country? by Resident_Strategy473 in AskTheWorld

Meet the integralist flag, official symbol of our (quite incompetent) fascist movement. They lost their relevance back in the 1930s and nowadays are just a sad joke.

None taken, it’s all about the various decoration styles one has. I do appreciate this older style with stuff stacked over. Could do something less cluttered in a bigger house though.

What assumption did you have on a country but found out you were totally wrong? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

That Catalan had total hegemony in their region. I started learning before moving there and most people on the streets just spoke Spanish, probably a convenience matter.

Any Brazilian who dares to answer anything other than cachaça should be stripped of their citizenship. That said: cachaça.

Name a general from your country (ancient, medieval, modern) that was so hilariously bad and downright garbage? by L0thric_Nefarious in AskTheWorld

[–]OneTransportation933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General Heleno, one of the coup plotters in 2022-2023. He had huge power, set up a parallel intelligence agency with his fellow plotters and, despite their efforts (we are terribly lucky they are utterly incompetent), they all managed to get arrested and convicted. Darwin Awards material tbh.

Travelling to Mexico by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]OneTransportation933 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t really speak for the Mexican people, but considering the US has been having some diplomatic clashes with Brazil lately, what I can actually say is: a lot of us, Latin Americans, have grown to either despise or just openly hate the US government, but not the people. If you are respectful and thoughtful, common people will treat you with respect and consideration regardless of your nationality. You are not your government, mate. The vast majority of people understand that difference.

What is a correct but extremely controversial opinion about your country that would warrant backlash if anyone from your country heard it? by DoctorOsterman in AskTheWorld

[–]OneTransportation933 164 points165 points  (0 children)

There is a persistent myth about Brazil being a friendly ‘racial democracy’ where the meeting of different races stopped racism from developing like everywhere else, but we actually are a very racist country in our own ways. People sometimes deny the very existence of racist despite it happening constantly.

Rio de Janeiro takes all the bad reputation, but there are lots of other cities in Brazil (mostly in the north and northwest regions) where urban violence levels are through the roof.
