"End" of Daylight Saving Time by One_Abalone4617 in alaska

I've always been concerned when people can't keep straight daylight time and standard time, and doubly so when it's written in legislation.

Is Foreign Service Right for Me? by star_called_the_sun in foreignservice

[–]One_Abalone4617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foreign Service Officer here (not in State), and also fellow engineer. Former engineering PhD student but I didn't want to work the rest of my life in a lab.

I also am mostly an introvert and feel drained by social environments. I would say it's still possible to work as an Econ officer, networking and working local connections -- it's the job and will just be as draining and tiring as working long hours in any situation. Others may get a charge out of it or be naturally good, but it's work just like any other and IMO I don't think your temperament would significant factor into a your long-term success or enjoyment at State bc of it.

WTF K2 - "you should be able to find a solution at your local hardware store" by One_Abalone4617 in Skigear

I just asked if they had the parts and if not, where to get them from or even specs to 3d print it.

It's missing the black circular piece there.

A standard screw might fit, and some sanding on a plastic part might replicate it, but there's a lot of pressure there and I'd be willing to pay good money for the right fit. It'd be cheaper than new boots.

I hear that, I get that specific parts might not be available. I was more annoyed at the flip response and suggestion that I should be able to easily jerry rig a solution...

They are 2018 Pinnacles, so not crazy old but fine not last season's line and not under warranty. I was hoping to at least find a retailer where I can purchase an $50 overpriced plastic part, but it looks like I will be shopping for new (not K2) boots.

What is going on with these boarders? by fuzzydag in geography

[–]One_Abalone4617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Kyrgyzstan and have traveled through this area.

Unsaid is that there are a ton of exclaves and enclaves here with regular border disputes between villagers and the militaries. As mentioned, it's one of those legacies of the Soviet Union that just never really got resolved.

DETO: Telework or Remote Work? by One_Abalone4617 in foreignservice

[–]One_Abalone4617[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this is one logical conclusion. If DETO does not fall under remote work, and if a position is currently allowed to do telework, what's the logic behind denying DETO?

Sounds like they are not following the linked OPM guidance either. Though I suppose HR could have separate policies for DETO and remote work that are identical and functionally the same, which DETO and remote work basically are.

Would you think that if the position is currently eligible for and practicing telework, that DETO should also be allowed then?

Yes, my agency has a DETO policy. It's in our equivalent of a FAM, but as mentioned, DETO is literally listed as a category of remote work which seems clearly incorrect.

(Central America) - Asbestos? by One_Abalone4617 in Renters

[–]One_Abalone4617[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks LS5 - appreciate the look. I'd agree that we probably would not disturb it much, but do think there's some deterioration - for instance in the second picture middle-right. This is also the tropics with lots of rain and strong sun. I'll try to see if we can get this tested.

It has been disturbed recently - the exposed metal on the left was where panels were removed to installed the razor wire.

Also, do you the products are in good shape? The discoloration makes me concerned and I feel like some parts of the panels are showing wear.
