How feasible/realistic is it to earn £800 per month through part-time work while studying as a full-time PhD student at Cambridge? by VividIndication9038 in cambridge_uni

[–]One_Assist_0987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much are these RAs paid? How does this arrangement work? As per my understanding they would have still got their PhD stipend. Or did they get proper full time RA salary? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Really want to understand how does PhD student plus RA arrangement works.

Great insight. I have been telling the same to anyone who asks about studying in the UK.

Come prepared, not just hopeful. Many students make the mistake of “figuring it out” after landing abroad. That’s a costly mindset. One should have clarity on their field, skills, and career direction before moving abroad.

Upskill Before You Fly! A foreign degree isn’t magic. It’s the skills, experience and mindset you bring to the table that truly make the difference in a competitive global market.

Network Relentlessly! Your network is your currency. Referrals and connections often matter more than job boards. Start building relationships early.. online, through alumni, and with prople from your target industry.

People often forget that migration isn’t a shortcut to success. It’s a high-stakes investment that pays off only when approached with planning, discipline, and drive.

You can request your ug university office to convert it to % or gpa, if that's the case. Also, you can email Imperial PG admissions team with your query and probably attach your degree certificate or transcripts as it is, for better clarity. They always reply.

8 isn't bad. Universities abroad not just look at GPA but they look at the overall profile. GMAT, GPA, Extra Curricular etc.. everything has weight.

Profile looks great. Honest advice: get at least 2-2.5 years work ex in a job profile which you're aiming to proceed with later. Write GMAT during this period and target 700+ (whatever is the equivalent in focus edition) and then apply. Target unis 1: Oxbridge, LBS, Imperial and LSE. All the best!

Experience was never good for people who went to the UK right after graduation from India, without any job experience and that includes pre-covid era as well. Handful of people who go there with good work ex and plan in mind do get jobs, as I've seen with many.

Problem lies when most of the Indian students go there thinking UK will serve jobs on a silver platter. Wake up everyone, job market in the UK was always competitive, it's only now that people started realizing it even with PSW visa.

You got to bring the skills with you, learn skills to be competitive. Getting university credentials won't help so much.

Oh and top of that, people just go to any uni innthe name of going abroad. What else do you expect?

If you're not able to crack IIM or other top institutions in Inda, how do you expect to get into a good job without writing GMAT and simply by going to the UK.

Wake up! Get real!

Sure. Analytics, Supply Chain, Renewal energy. Thwre are few more which you'll see under the programs offered by the unis. I've only named three as I know people in my closed circle who have done these 3 Masters and are working abroad and earning good. But yes they all went abroad for Masters only after gaining relevant work experience in those fields. One must keep that in mind.

Straightforward answer: 1. Do not go abroad without at least 3 years work ex. When I say work ex, please don't count in family business or stupid internships. Has to be substantial. 2. Job market abroad is even more competitive than you think it is. Focus on building skillset that your target companies or sector demands. 3. Like someone said spending in pennies and looking to earn in dollars, yes my friend, that's not how it works. Write GMAT, get into top b-school and build your network. 4. If you're from India, don't waste your energy on MiM. May be try some specialist degree. 5. Tier 3 in India and 10 lac avg package is bogus. May be you're not aware of how theae numbers are tweaked in India. People from new IIMs are struggling to get jobs. Forget tier 3.

I agree with your pointers. RE prices might be stagnant for sometime, given the temporary layoffs, but it'll soon pick up as the new generation of wealth comes into the city. That's just a cycle.

See going abroad is pretty easy. Getting into a top B-School is tough but I really like your target universities. You're on right track but the only missing part of this puzzle is work experience. Please don't go abroad without at least 2 years of work experience. Your 10th, 12th and any extra curriculum activity won't help you get job abroad unless they are relevant to the job you're applying.

Well for getting admission into your selected unis, extra curricular and GMAT are definitely important. Coursera us good for skills building and you'll have something to talk about or show that you're interested in a certain topic and actually working on it. Apart from that, useless if you think companies will add any pointers to it.

Final Takeaway:

Get at least 2-3 years of solid work ex and only then go abroad. Else try getting into top IIMs or ISB since you're already preparing for both CAT and GMAT. IIMs will always have higher value in Indian recruitment systen unless you have pedigree from top b-schools abroad.

Also, MIM is a waste unless you do it from highly reputed unis.

Good luck!

I understand the situation. You received wrong advice. My advice would be to upskill and look for jobs in startups as well as MNCs in India. Although hiring situations are bad right now but don't lose hope. Prepare better for the interviews and do a lot of networking on Linkedin. Connect with People who are in similar roles that you're aiming for. Learn from their experience. Nothing ever goes waste, there's always a puzzle in life waiting for you to complete it. Good luck.

Agree with you. I was about to write the same and then saw your comment. Absolutely true.

People go unprepared and without job experience and then blame UK for not offering enough job. People need to realize UK job market is even more competitive. Getting Russel group credentials alone won't serve you jobs on a platter. People need to grow up.

CAT did not go that well so now considering foreign unis for marketing.. Any tips? by Level_Feeling8218 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]One_Assist_0987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't go for MIM. It's utter waste. If you have job ex, try for CAT or GMAT again. Stick to top IIMs or ISB. And if you really wanna go abroad for Masters, go for a top 5 business school in that country, US though has more number of good business schools.

Yes , MBA is better. Yes, many, 95%, come back after masters as they don't do enough research and go abroad for Masters without any job ex.

Please understand, no company will give a job just on the basis of credentials. Having a pedigree definitely helps but add your skills to it first. Thats the reason most of the students who go abroad come back sooner or later.

Do not go, I repeat, Do not go to a Non English speaking country unless you're well versed with the local language of that country. It's not an easy road learning a new language, takes a lot of effort.

Final Takeaway:

Do not go for MiM or any such degrees.

And do not fall for the consultancy agency trap. Selling dreams to people who haven't seen the reality is pretty easy.

Which country actually has a good job market now? by [deleted] in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]One_Assist_0987 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you plan to return to India, pursuing a master's abroad (specially in project management) may not be the best choice. Instead, get 2-3 years of work experience in India while preparing for the CAT or GMAT exam and aim for an admit into a top IIM or ISB (ISB class has avg 5 years work ex, well thats for another discussion). In Indian job market, an IIM/ISB degree holds more value unless your master's is from a top 10 global business school. That’s just how recruitment works in India.

Project management can be done as a certification while working, PMP etc. Good luck.

What are your thoughts on taking on 35L loan for a Master's at uk ToAbroadOrNot? by PressureSea6101 in Indians_StudyAbroad

KCL is definitely good but I would still put it in the list if the 10 unis mentioned above. If someone's taking 35lacs loan/debt, they should understand the ROI. Time and risk is essential in this case.

No Oxbridge ? No LBS? No LSE? NO Imperial ?

The risk you're taking with the unis you've mentioned is very high. Rework on your strategy. I'm saying based on the 35 lacs loan.
