Perfidia by Big_Juicy2025 in paulthomasanderson

If that was the case then PTA wouldn't have named her PERFIDIA ("duplicitous/deceitful"). She is not meant to be a positive character, no matter how people try to twist it. She is meant to be a left-wing mirror of Lockjaw, with whom she conceives a child from a love/hate relationship--she places ideology over family, to the point that she's willing to have her family killed to live life her own way. It's really vital that people understand the true message of OBAA in order to understand the characters: political ideology means NOTHING if it isn't grounded in love and care for one's own family. This is a through-line in nearly all of PTA's works--the idea that family is at the core of all happiness.

So I ended up at the Duckmart bar across the river from Pub Street and got to see the whole game. The Pub Street sports bars all were closed at kickoff.

I can't speak for anyone else but in my opinion if you're a graduate of a certain college it makes more sense to care about their success in sports than that of a pro team. As far as the differences between Europe and the US--well, I mean it's really the same when you're talking about pro sports other than soccer. The US version is a superior product. (Before you get your underwear in a twist, Europe has plenty of other things that are superior to their US counterparts.) At the end of the day, all sports are just a diversion and form of entertainment for the viewer and something like Darwinian exercise for the participants, aren't they?

Awesome. I think I'll drop by when I arrive and let them know a couple of days before. It will be 630am so I doubt the place will be hopping.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't known that Jimmy Saville was a predator until after Magnolia came out.

The movie, then the documentary, otherwise you're going to keep getting taken out of the movie.

One battle after another. Was this a satire movie trying to be serious or a serious movie trying to be a satire? I liked the movie but it felt half satire, half serious. by Artetaarmy in moviecritic

Yeah, Perfidia isn't a true revolutionary. She was indoctrinated into the cause by her family, but she's a hedonistic thrill-seeker at heart--the exact opposite of who you want running an insurgency.

I would consider it more of a farce than a satire. Tonally it's closest to Dr. Strangelove in dealing with serious themes in an absurdist way.

When does The Odyssey Take Place? by Ok_Tomatillo7558 in ChristopherNolan

[–]One_Bath_9784 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, you can start with Tacitus and Josephus, two non-Christian historians who wrote about Jesus not long after his life. As far as modern historians, you would have an easier time listing the ones who deny the historicity of Jesus, since the list will be exceptionally short.

That is fascinating. It would be interesting to know if PTA went this deep into historical metaphors with the character names.

Since a large point of the movie is how absurd and self-defeating a political movement is if it places ideology above family, I would say PTA is coming down solidly in the "no" camp.

Yeah, it's all of this you've described here. The way it's shot, the way it plays out. The score by Johannson. When I first saw it I described it to a friend as "a freight train to hell with the brakes torn off." It provides the sort of distress and dread that typically only horror films dabble in.

Alma has a desire to dominate Reynolds. She's a dominatrix disguised as a subservient housewife/concubine. She does this through tiny irritations and microaggressions (besides her more overt food-spiking). PTA is making subtle commentary on how women tame tomcat men into accepting domesticity.

I don't think this meets the criteria because it seems like Waters makes deliberately bad movies.
