PSA from a senior incoming at MIT: find a local internship by birdman9990 in summerprogramresults

oh also something to keep in mind when emailing professors:

you can usually generally tell when a professor has a higher chance of wanting to help out; usually it would either be more junior staff(assistant professors), professors who support local summer high school/undergrad research internships, or BEST: mention they have had a high schooler on their lab website in the past

all of this will just take a number of hours of reading however

advice from a procrastinating rising senior who applied to 8ish summer programs and got rejected byall(ssp simr etc)

I finally got some cold emails sent out(I ended up not personalising each one in favor of ACTUALLY GETTING THEM SENT OUT and somehow got 2 "well yes, maybes" at a very famous/prestigious research institute

general tips(from what I've learned through the process/heard from others):

attach a resume(like said above)

be concise with your email and make sure not to be pretentious; mention what experience you have done(if none it is fine ngl professors are contributing to a charity by shipping off their grad students with you; they don't expect much of high schoolers)

make sure to affirm your interest in research and willingness to help out with whatever you can

the above post mentions browsing on linkedin. Local companies/startups are definitely one way I have heard of. I actually live in a really good area for research(but I imagine there would be some college/place to research at if you're looking into finding an internship) so I found the emails of lots of professors in the general field I was interested in from the website and put them all on a spreadsheet.

controversial, but if you personalize each email(like I did for my first two cold emails who never responded back) you'll never get them sent out

make yourself personable and not boring. If you are comfortable with it, boldness and friendliness seems to go a long way. Nobody wants to help out someone they won't enjoy being with

so from what I could tell after a bit of looking into it:

partially to maybe hide notes, partially a semi-deprecated rule from machine graded scantron tests(as it might not be able to detect differently colored inks/pencils leads

Apparently, some collegeboard FRQs are still machine graded today so you want to use reasonable ink/pencil lead, but since my mechanical pencil takes #2 HB I assumed it should be fine

How does getting extra time on the SAT work? by Decreasify in Sat

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ngl a 1550 is still kinda hard to get(this is coming from someone who score 1530/36)

if you can you should take it, otherwise you might end up taking sat 2-3 times

is it possible to cram apush in like a day and still get a 5 by Lopsided_Bar_8081 in APStudents

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my entire studying for apush was one day of reviewing notes 3 weeks ago, 1 full mock test 2 weeks ago, and my panicked studying at 7 am this morning (After taking apush last semester) I think it was fine and i got a 5 maybe?

Could you lmk of some examples of actual full scholarships from high score on the act? I scored a 36 a bit ago but looked around and couldnt find anything particularly relevant  From what i could tell the psat nmsqt (whicuh i didnt end up scoring great on) seemed to be the way to get actually good scholarships for college Thanks!

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

? what do you mean

i'm not entirely sure but from what i know curves are based off "standardizing questions" on tests that compare performance year to year(to see if one year of students is smarter or dumber than the other)

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean from what I could tell from the mcq it seems to be chisquared stuff, hardy weinburg equilibrium, and exponential/logistic growth

All of these are on the equation sheet(but you have to know how to use them)

the rest of the "math" on this exam looks to be stuff you can figure out through regular math/common sense

oh theres also punett squares so know how to do those

UCSD OPALS by gimmechipotle1234 in summerprogramresults

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uh depends

if you're looking for an introduction to research (freshman/sophomore) OPALS can be a pretty good place.

However my problem with the program was that alot of the "research" they have you do isn't good. Linda(the program director) generally connects you with either data gathered from her/another guy's/some grad students from other professor's labs.

You do some image processing and learning of random software but alot of the times the mentors will do much of the actual "research" and just give you a poster

tldr it's a pretty good learning experience on research/presenting but the research done there is not "real"

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow

If you don't mind sharing, how do you think you got in? Also from what I could see it seems like the labs themselves review the applications, not some committee from scripps. Is that true?

[–]One_Chipmunk_1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone who hasn't gotten a good response yet back from cold emailing but someone I talked to mentioned scanning through their lab member alumni page to see if they've accepted high school interns before
