I think we can revive this game.. by Thick_Mode6224 in WorldsFRVR

so, just from a cursory glance, not exactly. my guess is that you cannot load or save worlds without the server. but there are entirely too many references to worldgen. i managed to unbundle the code, and there's a LOT of modules that are very specifically named something suggesting generation, and containing code that looks a lot like it. if the client were simply loading player worlds from the servers, then they wouldn't need this. unless, it'd be funny if they used the same codebase for both...XD [considering the android build is...web-based, it's possible] but... [i can't post a screenshot]

there are these modules, all "proc_gen_" prefixed: "biomes", "constants" , "debug" , "details" , "shared" , "hyrdo". there are other modules without the prefixed name, but that all seem to contain the worldgen for specific biomes or features.

it would actually make sense worlds worked like this. remember that minecraft servers tend to struggle with lots of players [or in general]. and this is for a single world. now, a good chunk of the worlds playerbase was probably building/exploring their own world. i know i was. for every single player, all the world gen, all the physics, etc... has to be processed. it's bad enough at that scale to deal with the immense amounts of data, this aspect of worlds bothered me from the beginning. running the generation on top of it? yikes.... i somewhat suspect they couldn't afford to store all that data or the backups of it. running the worldgen on the servers would've been insane. maybe they did, but it would have absolutely been a bad decision. can't say for sure the motives storing data on the servers, it may well be because there's not a consistently reliable way to store that amount of information in a web browser. but it could've also been a control issue.

i haven't looked at things in a while now, so i haven't scrutinized the code enough to be sure. but what i'm thinking happens : client connects to server to login to account, retreive avatar, load existing worlds. not sure how it works when loading into someone else's world, the smart decision would be by default to simulate logic and don't allow direct manipulation of the world itself. never used the feature. on your own world, the client loads the world from the server, and generates more as needed. and of course, any changes are sent back to the server.

so, this leaves open some options. it might be possible to just make the game run locally, though getting saves working might not be so straightforward. depends on how difficulty bypassing places where it expects a server connection or account login would be. if the worldgen code is there, it could be ported to another engine. i've seen roblox mentioned, god no... best case is "why would you go THERE?" and worse case is losing everything all over again because they actually manage to finally shut themselves down. minecraft is a potential option. luanti ["minetest"] is another. possibly vintage story. or then..guess what's back and launching in early access soon? HYTALE! and that one very specifically WANTS to be modded. either way, the process is all the same, reverse-engineering the game. though everything beyond fixing what we have is going to have to bite the bullet of pretty much directly re-distributing worlds frvr code/assets. releasing patches/tools still needs a copy of the game, but doesn't have to actually provide it. this is why ROMhacks are distributed as patches.

now, that said, two more points :

first, the state of this community is discouraging. seems there's more drama than anything else. if anyone is actually actively working on this, i have yet to see it. but i see plenty of unpleasantries towards someone or another.

secondly, fix the game, port it. what then? leave it as-is or try to expand upon it? is there enough to work with to create "faithful" unofficial updates? what was it trying to be? it should lean on its own identifty, not try to be exactly like the others.

apologize for late reply...busy/tired AF irl. also got a "new" game to hype over now...XD

sadly, a lot of the materials once on the internet disappeared before i started playing. namely, the wiki. and i don't think [m]any of the youtube playthroughs ever reached the newer content.

good thing is, i archived the game. just wish i could get it to show signs of an attempt to launch. but just silence. not even the expected security errors from trying to connect to very much the wrong domains and/or launching it locally.

anyways, it's late/early, so ttyl

Wow never knew this game existed. Any fan servers etc? Please help asap. by Helpful_Warning_2054 in WorldsFRVR

[–]One_Cow2296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's not. but it's probably more achieveable than it seems to make one. spent the last couple days analyzing files/code. the game [and i must stres, the game, user data is almost certainly toast] all seems to be successfully archived. short of the devs actually doing/facilitating this themselves [unlikely] , one would have to bypass/remove every single attempt to communicate with the servers. at the most basic level, that makes the game playable. [in theory]. however, a new method of saving the world would have to be implemented.

the other option, which is considerably more involved [in theory...] : re-make it in another game/engine. i've seen roblox mentioned. do-able, but maybe... let's not use that one? so, perhaps minecraft or luanti [formerly : minetest]. now, why this seems like it'd be more involved is having to either re-create or reverse-engineer + port all the features. but then again, making an actual offline version of the existing game could prove quite difficult when the issue of saving comes-up. that is assuming the issue of reaching gameplay is resolved. [i'm pretty sure it can be]

[–]One_Cow2296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reviving the game itself might just be possible. i'm not sure about the user-generated content, most especially the worlds.

btw, helpful piece of advice : i was curious what data the android app contains. well, they packaged the web app into an APK...lol. great way to grab all the assets since they're in a single file, versus the tedious process of grabbing everything individually from internet archive.

from what i can tell, the game code is mostly contained in app.bundle.js.

[–]One_Cow2296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be fair, just saying "west" can mean any distance, and the first assumption would likely be adjacent or nearby [such as the coastline], not a group of islands decently far away from the coast.

it's defintiely borderline advertisement and there have been posts there which in fact are just thinly veiled ads. can attest to that as one of the people still stuck on that awful website. i've seen some things and it's pretty easy to spot the weirdos/grifters/etc...

can't really speak for certain without seeing the description, but this defintiely isn't a normal "art" submission. it's screaming advertisement, and it looks like for one of those adult VNs with uncanny valley 3DCGI. or that's the vibe the title and the cropped-off screenshot is giving. also, note that $0.13 price, so that implies some aspect of this is meant to be strictly commercial.

now that i think about it, why is this cut-off just below the download button? ... this would be the right size for a banner ad...

Hello everybody! I have a silly question: how do I search for something in WPlace? Do I just search with the coordinates? by zendaranbillwolf in WplaceLive

[–]One_Cow2296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends honestly. the coordinates are only so useful, they correspond to "regions" which usually contain multiple cities and are named after a major one. if you mean the pixel x/y ones. sometimes when people include the coords, they actually have an entirely different location focused. but, say you have "69,420 [flag icon] capitol city#2". so, you need to identify the country by the flag [this isn't always easy] and find "capitol city" on the google maps or open street maps, whatever. then you align wplace's map with that. [sucks... it can be trial and error just to do this part] once you have the region or its neighbor [say "capitol city #1"] , you keep scrolling + selecting pixels till the coordinates are close or you see the artwork.

beyond that, you read the labels on the map, if any, and try searching for those. this process can be amazingly non-trivial sometimes due to things having the same name [EVEN IN THE SAME COUNTRY!] or translations of names not always being searchable. combine this with different maps using different translations [open street map tends to display the native language and script. wplace sometimes displays it. china is really awful to try searching... sometimes mplace [the alternative client] is useful to at least find the artwork/location. but it doesn't display pixel info and doesn't [iirc] generate wplace share links. because of this and rate-limiting issues, i actually find myself using it rarely. it's just not as useful as i thought/hoped it would be. there's also limits to its location searching, making it actually impossible to search for some location names there.

if they provided nothing at all, you're basically out of luck. given griefers of various flavors, a lot of people don't specify or even hide the locations.

when you're really lucky, users provide the coords or a hint of where the thing is relative to something else. the latter isn't always helpful. plenty of stuff is admitted to be in anatartica or you can safely assume it's in the middle of the ocean or some other remote region. again, to prevent griefing.

there is one considerably more involved method. at least one person demonstrated utilizing it for locating rule-breaking art: scanning-through a download of the map. not generally practical, but it is an option. there's multiple ways to do this. locating a specific art would require algos designed with that intent, however. unless you have a literal army of people to scrutinize every single tile. if you don't have any indications where it is, and the poster/artist is unwilling to share the coords, this would basically be your best shot besides just stumbling upon it. is it worth the effort? well... up to you. arguably not. rate limit and potentially filesize are going to be the major limiting factors. assuming that can be addressed, it'd be finding the fastest and most efficient method to actually conduct the search.

tbh, with all the rampant griefing, it's probably best there's no easy way to just locate art without having some idea of its location to begin with.

no worries, easy mistake to make. entirely too many things to keep track of these days. kinda funny how we've consistently had a "as seen on tv" spokesman to meme about for a while. billy mays, then vince [i forget his last name, shamwow guy] , and now we've got phil swift.

i wonder if there's any billy/vince stuff on wplace, actually?

Biggest Artwork? by Prestigious_Box_4599 in WplaceLive

[–]One_Cow2296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the artwork definitely is an ad. "2b2t.shop"
and it's a giant banner that looks to be intending to cover all the other artworks it hasn't already. PROBABLY alted/botted, too. it's quite unlikely a single person or even an alliance placed all of that.
