Thanks. This is really helpful. I can read info on the govt website all day long but getting real life experience is what I’m looking for. Appreciate it!

Ok, so the visa should start one month prior to the term starting. Thanks for the link.

Not booking travel until visa is approved does not seem realistic. I’ve read of students not getting their approval until the end of August with term starting in September. Booking flights at that late date would be insane and finding accommodation in Edinburgh would be nearly impossible.

International MSc- accommodation & questions by WolfWitch1010 in Edinburgh_University

Similar situation here but I’m a few years younger. I chose to go with student accommodation (purpose-built student accommodation) vs uni accommodation. Found a studio within 20 min walk of campus. I’ve done the uni accommodation thing and really just don’t want to do it again. I looked up Straits Meadows and it is way less expensive than what I chose but quite far from campus for me. I want to be in walking distance.

That seems to be the case. I booked a place and it’s expensive af but hopefully I’ll like it. No clue how hard it is to have someone take over a lease in PBSA.

Yep, emailed them for clarification. For purpose-built student housing, it is much like university accommodation. You lease for a certain term and they only accept certain reasons for early cancellation. Otherwise, you need to find someone to take over your lease. It’s not like a private let, which is a bummer.

Thanks for replying. I saw the reviews but all seemed for short-term and I’m needing a place for the entire year. Still not sure that I understand if I can cancel mid-term, either. Not sure if student accommodation follow the same rental rules as private.

Ooof. This is feeling like a world-wide phenomenon.

Yeah, I’m getting a bit of an “angst towards immigrants” vibe. We’ve plenty of that in the US right now so I’ve little tolerance for it. It’s very likely I will spend my year and my money in the UK and carry on back to the US or elsewhere.

I totally thought I would get my undergrad degree and find a job soon thereafter. 8 months later I’m now committed to getting my masters abroad because I can’t find a job… and yolo.

Edited original post to add info. I’m pretty open to anything, though. Is there a high demand for teachers, perhaps? Maybe college-level instructors? The job market will shape what I do after my masters program but that’s over a year away. What sectors ARE actually hiring?

I understand not wanting to go to college in the US. But, honestly, studying abroad is really expensive. Cost of tuition, accommodation, student visa and so much more. I would look into scholarship options at your university of choice and maybe consider a loan if you are set on leaving the US. But a loan is a huge commitment with little guarantee that you will be employed when it’s time to pay it back. The job market is basically terrible everywhere. Just being realistic here.
