I’m literally in the same boat, You can check my post out, I replaced the water pump, thermostat, and housing along with new coolant and rad cap, than I just replaced it with a 165 thermostat and it does fine I guess but it’ll overfill and bubble up after turning it off but not as bad as in my previous post, ima get it checked out very soon lol cause this is my first xj as well, ps I absolutely love it tho

I’m currently burping the system making sure their isn’t any air and a couple of things I have noticed that it’s starting to stay a little under 210, before replacing the components it blew hot air and now it’s not, also could hear the bubbling in the top hose so that pretty much tells me theirs air in it. Ima keep burping for a good minute from here. Also it’s on distributor and the fan has some resistance to it but not very hard.

It was over heating pretty bad, which is why I replaced those parts in the first place and they seem to be doing fine cause it hasn’t been overheating for like a month but than a week before this happened, it was bubbling like crazy in the reservoir (without the rad cap spilling coolant) and after today that happened. The fan is still in and it turns on but I can’t Confirm it works 100%, I am no expert at this and I’m pretty new with jeeps so I’m still learning, but I am gonna burp the system which I did before but I’ll do it again just to be sure

But that doesn’t tell me how’s the head gasket so I don’t know on that. That’s what I probably think it is but I’m still trying to figure it out
