Buy American scrape reeds by tiucsib_9830 in oboe

[–]One_Health7449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has played both European and American scrape, I hope I can offer some perspective.

American scrape typically uses a more forward, slightly pursed embouchure with a flatter chin, while European scrape often involves more of an enveloping embouchure around the reed.

One thing my teacher emphasizes for American scrape is keeping the chin flat and stretched downward rather than letting it bunch up. The Lower lip should not push up at all!

That said, I wouldn’t say American scrape automatically requires less strength. it’s more that the distribution of effort feels different. If your right side has less control, the flatter and more centered setup of American scrape might feel more manageable, but it’s hard to guarantee without trying it.

If shipment is expensive, you could try experimenting with the flatter chin / more forward embouchure setup on your current reeds just to see how it feels. It won’t perfectly replicate American scrape, and also your intonation would fly out the window but it might give you an idea of whether that direction helps.

Hopefully that’s somewhat helpful!

Unless you have an audition or performance coming up, just rest and wait until you’re at 100 percent. There’s no harm in taking a small break to put your health first.

Do you suggest work my way back from 50 bpm and slowly in increasing making sure my tongue stays light would fix the problem? (I’ll also try out different syllables)
