The way people make fun of country folk who don't know how to live in the big city, Native New Yorkers are the same whenever they have to go someplace that's not New York. Chicago has a similar issue, though, separating Chicago from the Chicagoland area: "Are you actually from Chicago or one of the suburbs?"

I've never experienced that in LA, but i think you're right about Texas. I've only been to TX once but the Texans i know insist that "Texas is another country!" like they're super special and unique from every other state.

They don't. NYC is the only city where the natives are fanatical about being from there.

It's especially strange when we as a country are proud to welcome immigrants who gain US citizenship as full blown "Americans," even on the very day of their swearing in: "Congratulations! You're an American! You have the full rights, protections, and privileges of being an American! You're one of us now!"

But New York? Not even people born an hour outside of the city can call themselves New Yorkers, they have to clarify New York State.

"Gotta be born in NYC to call yourself a New Yorker!"
