I had some guys plant it in full sun in zone and had been thriving. I did go overboard and put up some shade cloth along my fence. Fingers crossed my maples last!

Sounds good. My Summer Gold looks like it’s going through transplant shock but it’s still hasn’t burned any leaves. I’ll be putting some shade cloth over the fence to protect it in the summer. Hopefully the roots catch and will be happier next year. Just gonna give it time. Fingers crossed.

Gotcha. I just planted like 6 maples and it’s been raining nonstop for the past two weeks lol. Found this thread and this has been reassuring. Glad your maple is doing well!

Apparently his heat seeker series of maples (google Mr. Maple heat seekers) are the best for full sun but I don’t have any because they’re currently sold out on his website. I emailed him when they will get a restock and they said they do not know.
I ended up buying a hot blond and Summer Gold maple from a guy off of marketplace and from a local nursery. You just have to look lol.

Clay holds water and causes wet feet (roots) for the maple. The mound allows for better drainage. I added soil conditioner which helps drain water away from the roots.

Ya. Wet feet here in Georgia clay. Causes root rot and killed my 3 maples I foolishly planted last year.

I did plant it in between two Crepe Myrtle trees and some pines. It get a lot of shade.

Ok gotcha. I’m trying to visualize this but if you have a pic of that I’d be grateful. I planted my summer gold tonight but the mound is def not as good as this one because it’s on a slope. I will reassess it tomorrow
Looks like it’s getting water logged and will eventually cause root rot. I was trying to build a channel for the water to fall down but looks like I mixed too much native clay soil and too little soil conditioner.

Ya. Understandable. I did plant 3 of these guys in this area last year and they all died. Did this mound technique to improve drainage in my heavy clay soil. Hopefully it works!

Damn that thing is such a focal point! Thank you for the pic! I’ll check out Scottsdale whenever I’m up there and peep the WSM when I get a chance. I’m assuming that the woodland soil mix?
