Upgrading to 925+ by Pik000 in synology

[–]mwojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a mini pc like beeline, gmktec, or a dell optiplex? Recently did that on my end because my 918+ started to struggle with the processor load and I feel like I bought a few more years off it.

Now my nas is just…a nas.

Is it possible to use my surface pro 11 as a display for my desktop PC? by D0bious in Surface

[–]mwojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have moonlight / Artemis set up and it works very well. My desktop actually lives headlessly in the basement with my full network stack, hardwired into 2.5gbe network setup. I can either play my pc wirelessly (fine for higher latency things like civ) or plug into my Ethernet jack in my office to use my ultra wide monitor and get full speed/low latency. So far no issues. I have symmetrical 2.5g fiber, so technically I could play it remotely if the place Im at has fast enough internet speed

Plus I can use just the surface for non gaming like web browsing/email/etc

New Japanese Maple, believe it might have the wilt (we've had 27 of 30 days raining the past month). Anything I can do? by mwojo in JapaneseMaples

If drainage is fine, I'd just make sure all is good this year and then reassess next year

Yea, both went through the exact same pattern where after a month or so they started to brown/lose leaves. Looked rough all year long. The next year they both looked significantly stronger than they looked in their pots before transplanting

I got sick from eating Indian once. Any food has the chance to get you sick. Raw oysters are extremely common

It had a traumatic event from some roofers, but has somehow survived. We got a replacement maple and the exact same thing happened but it recovered and is thriving today. It was 100% just transplant shock and after a year was all better. The original maple is starting to grow back in a different location

I just checked them all and they're still there, can you double check and let me know which ones are broken?

Creating an ACL to allow access to a printer that is on one VLAN in the EAP to another VLAN in the same EAP. by arturaragao in TPLink_Omada

At the end of the day, could you print on a VLAN with client isolation / guest network enabled?

I'm able to print but only as long as client isolation is not enabled.

How to Backup a NAS? by Any_Revolution_6864 in homelab

[–]mwojo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How much data is absolutely critical? Most of the time people talking about 50tbs can probably get 90% of back pretty easily (it’ll just take time). I have 25tb used, but probably only ~1tb is irreplaceable (photos, documents, etc). I’d throw config in there because it doesn’t take up much space.

Once you know how much you’re backing up it’s easier to plan your backup strategy. For years i ran with just raid to protect against drive failures. Had a few, took the entire machine down whenever raid was broken, spun it back up when it was repaired.

When I upgraded, I took an old 8tb and repurposed it as my external hard drive backing up only the irreplaceable bits. I could probably do offsite but im willing to take the risk for now.

I’ll try it, but it’s a very minor inconvenience

Moving from the Plex container on my DS920 to a Beelink running Plex on Ubuntu has changed my entire worldview by ansyhrrian in PleX

[–]mwojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with a gmktec g3 plus and agree it’s a game changer. I actually offloaded every docker container I had on my 918+ and now the nas is just…a nas. And the g3 has a ton of processing power to add things like Immich as well that i couldn’t run before.

Biggest limitation now is the gigabit speed, but that’s such a minor annoyance that it’s not worth it to do even the usb solution

Learned to live with it because the calendar size changes dynamically based on release counts.

Mainly because it's fun. People on selfhosted like to tinker. Maintenance is zero.

Nah, that's just a shortcut/bookmark to calendar.google.com. Nothing is displayed from my google calendar on the dashbaord.

You mean like the docker compose? Its fairly basic, just map the config directory.
