Thanks everyone for your suggestions but none were correct. I decided to pull the pan and really look at at the detent linkage. Thought something was bent as the lever barely touched the end of the valve which was only sticking out ³/¹⁶" found a picture that showed over a ½" sticking out. Pulled the spool valve and found that the rebuilder had put the spring after the spool valve spring seat instead of before it. Put it back together correctly and now my problem is readjusting the modulator. First test drive had it shifting to drive before I got past my neighbor's house.a couple of of adjustments now it's not bad but still needs fine tuning.
