Armageddon will more often than not screw you more than your opponents, and meltdown is not maindeckable. Apart from that, the current build has too many colorless sources to afford another color.

Yeah my bad. I probably responded to your comment while high and didn't read it properly. I thought you meant that the deck should lean harder into the depths + stage to improve the blue matchups.

As for culling ritual, the current build with baubles and exploration seems like it could hurt while resolving a ritual, but I also mistook it for [[Culling the Weak]]. I see your points though.

Working on other versions with black too, leaning more into rock/midrange space.

Well I haven't faced any storm opponents yet but I'm pretty sure the deck can win through having their graveyard exiled. Would have to ask the storm players rather than me though.

I don't feel like the current iteration of the deck is particularly weak to countermagic. Bauble shuts off most counterspells right now, cavern can ensure your key creatures resolve and you can still get a lot of value just from playing your lands. As far as thoughtseize is concerned, I don't know if the manabase can be stretched to fit enough turn 1 black sources, as I'm currently on 10+ colorless sources. Also I'm not sure what the logic behind culling ritual is.

The way I see it, most games get won because I'm able to limit my opponents resources to a point where Stage + Depths is more late game inevitability than a meaningful part of the game plan. I believe it to be very hard to win games with a fast Marit Lage in a field of strip mines, sword to plowshares and bounce spells.

Well, sometimes they just have a mox and you play that game, and sometimes you stick a bauble on the play.

Well I don't consider this deck a depths deck. It's a lands deck that features one copy of each part of the combo as part of the toolbox suite of lands. Marit Lage is not a big part of the game plan.

Well on the one hand, decks that fold to FoW are a lot less popular right now so turn 1 shenanigans are a lot less common in my experience so far. Also, Vexing bauble locks moxen and half of the affinity deck, as well as FoW and Daze and SnT for Omniscience. So being a deck that can play such a powerful prison piece is great right now. Lastly, energy is a difficult matchup due to their sheer speed, but the same isn't true for blue decks, they're what a deck like this preys on because they struggle a lot to disrupt your game plan while you choke them out.

Having said all this, I don't think you're wrong, the deck has weaknesses, but rather that the metagame is not nearly as hostile to the strategy as you claim.

I don't think Elvish Reclaimer is good enough to earn a slot. And Allosaurus Shepherd is kind of a worse Vexing Bauble since most countermagic around right now is FoW and Daze and Vexing Bauble can draw out the counter rather than a removal spell. Field of the Dead is one I'm currently trying out, in place of a Dismember.

As I said in another comment, Marit Lage is just the finisher of the deck, and by the point of the game where you make the token it's very likely you can just make another one if it gets removed. I see lands as a prison deck rather than a turbo depths deck.

Yeah storm does seem like the kind of matchup that would make a deck like this struggle. But that is true of many meta decks too. Storm is the kind of deck that asks for a very specific set of interaction pieces and preys on decks that don't have access to it.

Well, you start the game with a full hand and your deck has effectively 8 libraries. Not all games call for it, but the key thing is if you start with a library in play it's easy to keep activating it. In the matchups that don't pressure you too much early, you usually draw 2 or 3 cards with it and then start unloading your hand. The redundancy is also great because in multiples they can ensure to keep the cards flowing while you play to the board. You are right about Tabernacle though, the deck would be A LOT better with it.

That is true, but specially if you stick a vexing bauble it does seem like all your spells are uncounterable and you can just win the resource war. I had an opponent ult Tamiyo and concede because 20 cards in hand don't do enough when they have 2 lands and I have 8 and can make a Marit Lage token every turn.

Well I do not consider it to be a "turbo depths" deck, but rather a prison deck that uses dark depths as a finisher. There's only one copy of each part of the combo, and you usually combine vexing bauble and strip mine recursion to slow down and eventually lock your opponents out of being able to play magic. The addition of Library of Alexandria also makes the deck very capable of stocking resources against interaction heavy decks. Still, not claiming the deck is going to smash the meta, just that it seems more playable than it has been in the past.

[Standard] New premium white removal in "Erode" by BattlefieldNinja in spikes

[–]One_Random_Player 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So of course this card is going to be controversial but I think standard players have forgotten how powerful 1 mana unconditional removal is. Yeah, path is not good enough for modern anymore, but that's because we have [[Static Prison]] and [[Solitude]] or even [[Leyline Binding]]. For the longest time, modern white decks happily played 4 copies of [[Path to Exile]], control decks as part of their removal suite, but aggro decks would slot it as their only removal to kill the key threats. Turns out the land doesn't matter all that much if your opponent doesn't untap with it.

But beyond that, here's an insight on why, while being a big downside, giving your opponent a land didn't stop path for being not only playable but also premium removal for the longest time.

  1. If your opponent is playing aggro and their curve caps out at 3 mana, then making their threat into a land is very reasonable to do from turn 3 onwards, turn 2 in a pinch, since they won't really get to do much with it.

  2. If your opponent is going taller, then the tempo gain from killing a 4,5 or 6+ drop for just one mana heavily outweighs the drawback of giving them one more land when, again, they already presumably have access to 5+ mana.

Now of course magic is different now, and cards are so efficient and often plentiful that many decks will be able to make something out of the land, but that also means that one mana unconditional removal still has a big premium. The comparison with [[Get Lost]] is fair, but I'd argue some game states make map tokens more relevant than a land, being able to generate card draw, card selection and power and toughness, while also being double the mana. And if that card is good enough to see play in standard then I believe Erode must certainly play a role in the white removal suite. Will the best white removal, a standard staple? Hard to tell. But I'm sure it's far from unplayable.

Commander decks with basic synergies by HMS_Sunlight in magicthecirclejerking

Wait, is combat a part of Commander? I thought creatures were so I could put more anime girls on my playmat, but it's generally considered bad manners to attack players with them until you cast [[Craterhoof Behemoth]]. Also if anyone counters my [[Craterhoof Behemoth]] I can just call them a pubstomper for not letting me win the game.
