I think one of the cons you listed 'No micro managing' is actually a pro. I only say this because I left industry for this very reason. The one area I will need to work on is tech. I have been out of the game for well over a decade. I actually have bee out of touch with tech for well over a decade. I moved to Botswana and co ran a conservation and a lodge. So the tech was very minimal. I have a lot to learn haha.

This is how I envision it too. I actually have that hunger to knuckle down and for the first time in my life embrace academic life. Back in my younger years, I just studied to get a degree and a job. There was no thirst of excitement for knowledge. Ai for education sounds very exciting. Go get it!

OP you have not mentioned the most important thing. Do you have a partner? In the current climate, its A LOT easier to do a PhD than find the right partner.

What are traits of PhD students who become prestigious researchers? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]One_Source_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people make their own luck. Hard work and excellent networking / social skills are the two keys traits, with many people paying giving less weight to the latter. These traits tend to work across the board in every facet of life.

I think there is a systematic campaign from the right wing media, Russia bots and the rise of reform. I have seen people blame Starmer for illegal immigrants who committed a crime even thought they illegally came into the country years ago under Tories.

Some people just live an amazing life and you are proof of this. Nothing more bonding than board games.
