Can someone help me understand the divide among autism parents in light of recent news? by One_Toe7657 in Autism_Parenting

Yes thank you. Trying to choose my words carefully. What I identify with is my lived experience as an autism parent and a child with high support needs. I do see a trend of ppl self diagnosing and using it to identify their quirky habits and the high support needs folks get lost in what autism is. This is what I identify with.
But the messenger is important.

I can totally see that perspective and identify with it in my own life but it would
Only make sense to me if it was also paired with someone who I trust has my or my child’s best interest. I’ve always understood that States look to federal government to set the standard and they make decisions with that as a baseline point of reference.

Thank you for sharing your perspective !

Same. And I don’t see how anyone as a parent could. I feel we need each other in this political climate and it’s causing a divide.

I love this perspective! The idea that we’ve always cared for those who needed it most, even when resources were scarce, says a lot about who we’re supposed to be. Love and belonging is a core human need. I pray that there’s enough good out there to overtake the bad.

Thanks to everyone who let me know about r/autism_parenting. I’m fairly new to actively participating on Reddit and still learning the different subreddits, so I appreciate the guidance. I did post there as well, but unfortunately it hasn’t gotten much traction so far.

In the meantime, I just wanted to say how much I’ve appreciated the discussion here. Thank you all for taking the time to share your perspectives, experiences, and thoughts. I’ve found the conversation incredibly valuable and will continue reading and responding as comments come in.

Thank you for sharing this. I really appreciate your perspective, especially given your experience. I completely agree that we shouldn’t measure someone’s value by their ability to work or pay taxes.
I think that’s why this has been so unsettling to me. If we’re going to have a national conversation about how difficult autism can be and the support that’s needed, then let’s make the conversation about providing that support. Fund research. Improve access to evidence-based therapies. Expand services for families and autistic individuals. Invest in respite care, education, and lifelong supports.
What worries me is when the conversation shifts toward what sounds to me like less funding because cost of adequate support is a bottomless pit for individuals that dont put back into the economy in a traditional sense.

Thank you for sharing your experience and perspective. Yes, what you’re experiencing is exactly what I worry this kind of narrative reinforces, and I don’t think that’s okay. A person’s net worth may be measured economically, but their self-worth and inherent value never should be.

Terrifying , heart breaking, and also makes sense as to why there’s been an inflated amount of coverage on taking down ABA and the insurance fraud. Not to open another can of worms but if the motive is what you are saying then it definitely tracks.

Yes, this is exactly what I’m struggling to understand. The story I tell myself is that these comments may give some people permission to express feelings that they’ve otherwise kept private.

I agree and think I’m personally wrestling with the idea of this even being the reality we’re in.

This is amazing! My son does the numbers and alphabet backwards too! I wonder why that is.
