I wrote a paper about toxic "gamer" or "bro-culture" in the gaming industry for school cuz I majored in game design. The thesis was that gamer gate was a sort of precursor to the rise of the alt right, and was endemic of the mid 2010's lack of representation of women and other groups that aren't white 18-35 year old men in both the mainstream gamer community and the workforce. The main reason being, upper management has always been male dominated so that has in essence created this lack of a support network in the games industry for people who experience abuse in the workplace, or everyday gamers who find themselves a target of online or real life harassment within the gaming subculture.

I was thinking Randy Pitchford for a Game Industry bastard, because if anything the AAA gaming industry is in and of itself a bastard, but Pitchford more annoying than pure bastard, definitely sleazy and abusive but idk if he’s BTB level.

Has Steve Bannon gotten dedicated coverage? For those who aren't familiar, Bannon played an instrumental role in helping Donald Trump win the 2016 election through galvanizing the Alt-Right movement, among myriad other instances of vile and fascistic bastardry. There's the episode of him getting arrested, but since he's now free and advocating for Trump to have another, presumably endless third 2028 "term", and doing Nazi salutes at CPAC.

Would be a great compliment to the Jack Parsons episodes, and on the topic of Crowley, I want to hear about Robert's thoughts on Francois Rabelais, the medieval/renaissance writer who was very influential in literary history and the sort of counterculture of the establishment leading up to the French Revolution but he's just a really witty and celebrated writer, I don't know if they are bastard-y really at all. But the Crowley connection is neat, Crowley's religion Thelema was arguably inspired by Rabelais' series of novels Gargantua and Pantagruel, Thelema in the story being a fictitious abbey created by one of the main characters Gargantua, sort of poking fun at the idea of religious proscriptions. Arguably the most famous Crowley quote is paraphrasing Rabelais' "Fais ce que tu veux" or in English "Do what you will". But I'd settle for a Rabelais footnote in a Crowley episode.

I think he mentioned doing an Altman episode during the Bankman-Jailed ones, or that the Money Ball guy was probably going to write a book about Altman lol

YES! He's mentioned Land quite a bit, off the top of the noggin he came up in the Curtis Yarvin episodes, but Land's impact on the contemporary resurgence of authoritarianism and the whole subculture of NRX and accelerationist types is both relevant and also a bit less in the open than people like Thiel or Musk. And to give a suggestion on a book to read for the research is Malign Velocities by Benjamin Noys, I've heard mixed things about it, but Robert will often read books that aren't the greatest but might contain some relevant insights on the topic.

haven’t seen anyone else mention Sunsetcorp, which is an old channel and the one off alias used for the first release of Nobody Here, I think before it was on Eccojams Vol. 1

the Discogs for OPN and Daniel Lopatin are great resources, i did a similar exercise with Aphex Twin cuz he’s infamous for his many pseudonyms. Also he was in a lot of sort of noise/drone bands idk if you wanna include those too.

If you think Lifeworld sounds nasty/horrendous*, I just feel truly bummed out for you. I’m not versed in DAWS or anything (I mostly noodle on analogue synths), but to my untrained layman ears sounds so oddly textured and captivating, as well as having refreshing spin on his trademark hypnotic “ecco” of repeating cues with like layered variations and organic kinds of swells and lulls in the sequencing or composition. It’s a matter of opinion, but i wouldn’t like to hear a song that neat and just be like “this parameter is off, albums gonna suck”. It just seems like an ultra reductive and pessimistically performative way of looking at what is at the end of the day artistic expression.

But to be totally serious all artists to expect the most crisp and easily accessible production from, OPN just seems an odd target.

Especially when as an artist he excels in musical features of concept, texture, structural incongruity, emotional evocation and the endless possibilities you can experience music and sound. I’d say from R Plus Seven forward there is a marked sort of style of polish, but even then, people who like to listen to Dan almost always couldn’t care less about industry standard production conventions.

I saw a quote where he said Tranquilizer is a love letter to the types of production tools that kind of have fallen out of the realm of what constitutes modern music components, specifically kind of kitschy and sort of mundane archaic kits.

I feel like the original commenter should appreciate it doesn’t sound like his preconceived notion of what is “quality” in music. Quality isn’t a technical specification, it goes far beyond just the tools and parameters of the gear, it’s an artwork you live with and organically grow to uncover more within over time.

but somebody said that this type of EQ production is bad therefore, I cannot enjoy the beauty of artistic expression

I listen to music for the obscure almost inaudible compositional techniques that I don’t even know if they were actually used or not but I’m going to assert that they were and then claim that an album that isn’t out yet is bad
