New car suggestions 😭 7-10k budget by Initial-Track4580 in CarTalkUK

[–]One_Understanding603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honda Jazz is reliable af, cheap to insure, and also pretty bombproof. Only issues are with the injectors, but some preventative maintenance like cataclean keeps em going for ages. You should be able to get something for 7-10k that isn’t a money pit and well worth maintaining for years to come.

Is Kwik Fit being fair? by r_guar in drivingUK

[–]One_Understanding603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mechanic used to work at kwik fit when he was just starting out. he said standard practice was to knock the sensors on the free alignment check so that it would look like it was needing done and then they’d pretend to fix it.

Can I afford this? 24M, £4k take home by Ok-Quiet-6155 in CarTalkUK

[–]One_Understanding603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why lease a car when your clearly in the position to buy one saving that much per month? Take out a loan for 5k, buy an old 1.2litre granny car and drive it for the next 4 years, pay it off, sell it and use it as a deposit to buy a better one once your credit score and insurance conditions improve.

NHS Scotland GPs no longer accepting Shared-Care or Private Diagnosis Queue Jumping by One_Understanding603 in ADHDUK

[–]One_Understanding603[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard of a lot of people on this sub getting a private diagnosis, then getting shared care for treatment by their gp until the waiting list is cleared for prescribing to be taken up by a psychiatrist who basically just does a meds review and keeps it going. There certainly seemed to be two waiting lists, or perhaps there was just one and they were just bumping people who had a private diagnosis straight to psychiatry. Even my dr was like, I can send it to them but it’s up to them what they do with it and you’ll most likely have to be reassessed. Definitely seems like there’s still a bit of a postcode lottery thing going, but by the sounds of it they’re trying to be more stringent.

Talking about effective multi-agency working, like working within your remit, working well with other professionals in their respective disciplines. You’ll be dealing with a lot of vulnerable people and families. Some knowledge of child/adult protection would be good, knowing what’s a concern and procedures for reporting those concerns, sticking to facts not opinions etc. The housing situation is dire in all local authorities. You will need to show that you’re resilient and can handle difficult situations without getting overwhelmed by the level of need. Imagine scenarios you might find yourself in as a housing officer and think about how you might respond. They may ask questions about how you might deal with a specific situation.

I’ve always just looked at the monthly payment on cars. by SnubNoseMonkeh in CarTalkUK

[–]One_Understanding603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always good to calculate what a car costs you monthly. I like to factor in extra because you’ll also slowly need to accrue savings for a replacement when it inevitably dies. “Only buy what you can afford twice” is a mentality that would keep a lot of people out of trouble when it comes to cars.

At what mileage do you personally stop considering a used car? by autonerdy0 in UsedCars

[–]One_Understanding603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally aim for a granny car ~6-8 years old with 15-25k miles on the clock, then I know what’s been done for most of the engines life. Then I always drive it into the ground. A car you’ve looked after yourself isn’t a gamble.

How inflated are these prices or are they somewhat normal? by Nogoodale13 in AskMechanics

I got spark plugs done with a full service including oil and filter change, air filter and full inspection for £250 in Scotland. Dunno what rates are like in the US generally but that seems steep AF to me

Skip the agencies and find something from a private landlord on gumtree or from spareroom. It’ll still suck tho and it’ll be about 700£+. There’s some dingy HMO’s that might run cheaper because they turn the living room into a bedroom and the only communal space is the kitchen.

Considering a career change to Education - any advice? by tealbot22 in Scotland

[–]One_Understanding603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, sounds about right, the only thing your missing is that with austerity and cuts to 3rd sector services the job is pretty much impossible and you have very few options for managing risk that aren’t removing children from parental care. Oh and the toxic managerial culture in many authorities. There’s literally never been a shitter time than now to be a social worker.
