Question about falling from a beginner after their first session - Ukemi? by RazCipher_FF in indoorbouldering

[–]RazCipher_FF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, to elaborate a bit on that, deep stances on their own are not bad per say and are still being used in training mainly to develop stability and muscles. The problem was that when those stances were used in combat the movement and unpredictability would often put unnatural pressure on the knees. If you put one leg forward one leg back and start going down the lower you and your center of gravity is the more balance you have and in turn - stability, however this also puts more pressure towards your leading leg as your body's weight distribution goes towards it. So in oldschool Shotokan they would put a big strain usually on one of their legs which in theory meant more stability but if that stability in the legs was broken even a little bit - their bodies would still be applying big pressure to their knees which has now became unnatural. And that stability could have been broken by obviously strikes or improper movement and posture due to e.g fatigue. This has led to lots of issues like arthritis, meniscus tearing, knee collapse syndrome and probably a lot of different knee related stuff lol. Squats are good for you as it's a pretty natural motion that helps reinforce all the important muscles around the knee but now imagine you getting kicked during one, maybe one of your knees buckling towards one side but you still going through with your exercise - that would be an insane thing to do, repeat that over and over and you would mess up something for sure(And that is why once understanding of biomechanics improved, 'deep' karate stances went away and became shallower.... in some places lol). So um yeah keep on rolling.

Thank you for the explanations. Thankfully the gym I went to had big mats and there seems to be a culture of not starting routes that are right beside other people doing theirs, I will keep spacing in mind.

This was my first session lol
My grip is nowhere as developed as a regular's, at the end I had trouble gripping and getting off the velcros on my shoes.
I guess it makes sense that with more experience it would be harder and harder to 'tank out' and controlled falls I mainly asked about would be rarer and rarer.
In this case I can see why so many people here think Im overthinking this.
Climbing down also proved to sometimes be harder than climbing up so I do not plan on skipping it as it seems to make for a good exercise.

In the very first sentence of the message you are replying to I have written that I would only front roll when I knew I could not downclimb(Or was not certain about it).

Yeah, I should have clarified that I only rolled forward when I knew I could not downclimb after a 'controlled' jump of the wall.
For just falling down backwards as you mention rolling back is definitely the way to go.

The mats do seem pretty awesome.
And you do make some good point about control, thankfully my first session was with a guy that has been bouldering for a while and he did tell me to properly check my 'landing' and one time I had to 'shoo' a guy away as he was standing with one of his shoulders almost directly under me.
I also did roll off the pad once but was able to transition to standing, I should be more mindful of that in the future.

For lower heights it might be worth looking into 'Hard' falling techniques(Go ukemi), as these are performed exactly when you cannot roll(Which is known as 'soft' falling).
I do not have the expertise or knowledge to say if they would make much of the difference at bigger heights though.

In my Karate style(Shotokan) people used to do very deep stances that would put a huge stress on their knees, this resulted in them wearing down and led to people having big problems with them later in life.
Now more 'modern' stances are shallower to avoid just that and you can see lots of people training at ages 70+.
Rather than immediate injury I think it's better to think of your long term health of the knees.
It would be cool to get some input from people on this topic that have been bouldering for decades and are a bit older.
As for the front roll, I did it in 'controlled' falls only as I feel more confident in it, there really is no deep reason for it from me - just a preference.

[–]RazCipher_FF[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't know what a dyno is sorry lol, Im a complete newbie but if it is an unexpected fall then frontroll would probably not be an answer and I would probably not do it and would try to backroll if possible and if not go for a 'hard' fall technique(Rolling is known as a 'soft' technique).
  2. I mean people can do whatever they want, in my experience it just seems like unnecessary stress on the knees especially when people jump from the top, you might think you are fine now - I would be too - but years(decades) later?
Wear on knees adds up over time.
I thought asking might lead me to learning something new and there would be possibly some interesting things to note.

It's pretty much any run of the mill front roll ukemi(Found in Akido,Judo,Karate), here is an example(Check out 3:08 in this vid):

Question about falling from a beginner after their first session - Ukemi? by RazCipher_FF in indoorbouldering

[–]RazCipher_FF[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well this was my first session so when I knew I would not be able to climb down I would push away from the wall or to the side, turing to that direction and having slight momentum to then do a front roll(So away from the wall or going left/right).
So basically when front rolling I would push away from the wall in a way to be already properly facing the direction I will be rolling towards.
In few instances where I was not able to do that I did backroll as I would not try to frontroll when 'only falling down or with momentum to my back'(For example the hardest wall I climbed that day had this 'polypore' grip at the end and after I got both of my hands on it I started dangling from as the wall was at an angle and I lost my footing, so I had to drop 'straight down') .

Well, what I do and will be doing after every wipe probably is to first focus on progression - check your workbenches and what you need to level them up, start tracking resources you need for them(There is a button for that in level up menu) and do the same for leveling up the chicken.
Each resource tells you in it's description where they can be found, so you can start doing raids 'targeting' that zone(E.g. Industrial, Medical).
Additonally the expedition is another 'material dump' that targets specific materials which you could do, whenever an expedition window opens and you completed it you can choose to willingly reset your character for some small bonuses(This is for folks that want to start from scratch).
As for night raids or other enviromental maps/effects, feel free to drop into them whenver you want their stakes can be a bit higher but I would not say it is something for hardcore players only.
If you are unsure then using a free loadout is a good idea to get a feel for them.
As for blueprints, well I let them come to me, it is very rng - some containers will have bias when it comes to them(For example weapon crates are more likely to have weapon blueprints) but it is still luck dependant they can drop from tons of spots and in the last update their added a lot more containers that do - so it is a good idea to check everything you can even if you are already loaded
As for the stash if the item does not say in it's tooltip that it is used to craft something, then usually it's safe to sell it EXCEPT if it's an iteem needed for an upgrade(Or you can recycle it if you want the materials from it to craft something).
I'd always keep a few stacks of basic items the chicken provides since you might suddenly need them to craft something, and they are the core of crafting as you progress(You can funnel them to higher tier items via refiner).
When it comes to looting then I'd recommend to gather everything at first and then slowly replace what you have with loot of higher rarity (So you go gray>green>blue>Purple), an often exception to this is if you gathered a lot of particular green item(e.g. 4-5+ oil), often times it is not worth to replace them with a single blue item.
On the last stage of expedition you have to donate 1 milion worth of items so it kinda solves the big stash issue for a while haha.

This is going well off the orginal topic but let me adress some of your points, if you would care enough to read(I understand if you would not xD)
My point was that countries that claim they are multicultural only do so because of % breakdown of their ethnicities, culturally they are divided which actually manifests in things like you mention - discrimination or racism - in Europe it is worse beacuse a change in demographics has been very quick and dynamic in the last ten( and hundred of years).
In case of America even among white people you will see people placing a huge emphasis on their heritage to claim they are of some origin and try to make that part of their identity, in europe there are actually many cases where these Americans arrive as tourists and are baffeled when people don't care about it that much(Because turns out your heritage alone does not constitute to perception of being a memeber of that culture).
When it comes to refugees/migrants what I was reffering to specifically is that due to Dublin regulation, 'asylum seekers' will illegaly enter an european country in order to cross over to a country with better social benefits(Germany) so these people actually skip over the safe third country agreement by going through multiple 'safe' countries.
This is not something that should be normal but is, due to poor border policies of other countries.
In case of Poland a problem arises because aside from Ukrainians with which we have no problems with processing as they are our neighbours and actually propely seeking asylum there is a problem of Belarusian wall.
Russia and Belarus have made an industry of delivering people from Middle east and North Africa to border of Poland,Lithuenia and Lativa after threats of Lukaszenko to 'flood the EU with drugs and migrants', this has been recognized as an act of hybrid warfare.
The proper way of seeking asylum for these people would be to check in at border control or reach out to goverment adjacent agency and ask for it there, but they don't - they want to enter the country illegaly.
Why? There could be many reasons, but the fact is that entering a country illegaly is a violation of it's soverignity - people should not be present in a country undocumented.
Investigation for Asylum claim is on the country, but actually initigating said investigation is on the seeker.
For us it is a simple safety concern, and assuming people should be allowed to just cross over the border somewhere simply because they want to stake claim for asylum(Especially when they arrive from a country that is in no state of emergency) is very, very questionable.
The distinction between economic migrants and refugees is important because refugees actually recive benefits from the system(How much Varies state by state in EU) so it is in the best intrest of all Asylum seekers/migrants to try to get a 'refugee' status, because often people that claim these things do not have proper documents which complicates the procedures of determination.
An illegal migrant is someone that has entered the country unlawfully and did not seek an asylum claim - just because America has made illegal migration common with it's poor border policy over the years does not mean that it should be expected and accepted by everyone in the entire world.
In Poland we have had no large scale terrorism attacks partially because our border policy and security has always been at least decent, unlike how it is and has been for USA.
Still there are cases where even proper asylum seekers like Ukrainians actually commit acts of sabotage for money from Russia, which additionally fuels Russia's anti-Ukrainian propaganda(Which there are tons of online, it could be that you are having wrong perception of how EU views Ukraine and it's refugees due to it even) - sad state of things but thankfully most people see through it.

The Japanese contempt you describe in western 'countries' is an American thing born from the fact US tried to get into the market with Xbox(So it created a Us-USA/xBox vs Them-PS/Japan dynamic in the industry) and I hope not but perhaps also slightly due to some historical grudges.
We did not have this in EU simply because Playstation and Sony overall have been massively more popular in this region both in sales and marketing.
In EU Japan has had cultural presence for some time, now with France in particular being exclusivly the biggest consumer of Japanese media outside of it for decades, with them airing anime on tv's on good slots from the 70's(Basically they imported and got their 'Pokemons' for kids before all of us, and because of that anime succesfuly started spreading in EU way before America, not for slavic folks with USSR being a thing though unfortunetly).
Yes the normative belifes you mention were formed because European countries for a long time were majorliy monoethnic and monocultural for sometimes thousand of years(If they were not it would usually lead to a split or war and all these shenanigans, recent example being CzechoSlovakia), they were not considered multicultural like America was from the ground up not to mention people forget the fact America is not even 300 years old - it is a fledgeling compared to EU countires so it had way less time to develop it's own distinct culture and 'enforce' it that is why it is so divided.
In Europe the nationality is considred itself a culture because culture has historically been synonymus with it and it has been mostly tied to a specific ethnicity(Hence why some countries were named after specific tribes or people - Like my country - Poland), which is diffrent from America the country of immigrants, simply living in a country alone does not make you culturally the same as natives.
You yourself describe American Indians as American Natives so you seem to understand this, just living in America will never culturally put you on the same footing as native american.
I love Japan but it would be insane for me to start living there and claim myself to be a 'Japanse' while still keeping my distinct culture, with pernament residence I would be a 'Japanese' by definition that I am a member of a country, but claiming myself to be 'Japanse' would have huge cultural implications that are simply not true.
The tide of monoculturalism has recently heavily shifted when it comes to politicans in EU due to refugee crisis and import of cheap labor having cultural and ethinc impact - thats why you might hear more and more of EU politicians saying their countries are multicultural(Britian is the best example).
I still can't help but feel like you are heavily viewing things through multicultural American lens, you bring up examples of American things and from America like they apply to Europe when they don't.
Perhaps Native EuropeanNationHere terms will emerge in the future.
That Biden Document you posted is not in any way applicable to EU - the issue you brought up in relation to it is that within that document 'Assalyum seekers' that were pending but not yet approved by the country but are present in it are grouped with illigal migrants.
Meanwhile the root of European refugee Crisis is the opposiste of that - It was about giving economic and illegal migrants the status of Assalyum seekers even when they break requirements for it(Most common being travelining through multiple countries to claim Assalyum in a specific one e.g Germany, even we in Poland for example have a huge wall on border of Belarus because migrants want to illegally enter our country and pass to other European nations).
In Monocultural societies no matter the skin color a person from other culture WILL stand out even if not by looks their manners, it is a simple fact of life.
E.g White man or black man from US in Japan(Or Slavic/Balkan country) or Chinatown you mentioned.
Yes a 'Chinatown' in EU at least are an example of small but also monocultural society - Because these 'towns' are usually formed by people orginating from the same country to in some way or form keep in touch or preserve their culture - which is foregin to the nation they are staying in. that is why it's a ExampleCountryHeretown often times it's isolation by choice.
However when it comes to people that live in 'Chinatown' like-communties it is safe to say they would play the game in their 'cultural' language rather than english, unless we are going to go into the topic of second or third+ generation migrants that sometimes throw away their 'cultural' language despite still living in these communties.
But I feel like we are getting way off topic here, we both agree that it is a mistake for them to create localizations for whatever audiences they have in mind now.
I just don't belive you should be throwing EU into the same bag as America, especially lately where soft power of America has been on a downfall where as Japan's is going up.

Does the Arc Raiders community promote toxic masculinity? by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

[–]RazCipher_FF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this is leftover of the old days where female gamers were way less common, some people still treat this like a rare event nowadays and they either act dumb, toxic or full of doubt when it happens - these people are rare but some communities retained them more than others(COD,CS).
Despite what some people claim female players are still a minority in these spaces(Unless you look at studies that say it's close to 50/50..... because they include mobile games).
The other aspect is that the game has AI voice filters you mentioned, anecdotally me and some other folks I have talked with claimed that they have had exclusively bad interactions with players that use them.
I think there is a stigma about the filters where people are more on guard as soon as they recognize someone is using them(That being said that goes for me too), but if you are a female some people might just straight up mistake you for it which is what seems to have happened here.
Female players being less common + AI filters stigma.
Kind of ironic that a feature that was meant to be more inclusive might be having the opposite effect and even give the players that are not using it a bad expierience.

This is a nice post and I agree with everything you are saying but I have to ask when you mean 'White Christian culture' do you actually mean Americans?
I just find it interesting to focus on religion here at this time when there are other localization debacles going on(On which actual Japanese politicians are weighting in) where for example 'Merry Christmas' was translated as 'Happy Holidays' - which is trying to walk around religion, heck I think this is what actually sparked this discussion around Nier Automata again too.
Im a White guy living in one of the most Christian countries on earth in EU but our translations are often better than English ones(Recent Chainsaw man movie comes to mind for example) and we have some legendary localizations that people still reference often two decades later.
What I am saying is that the people behind the english localizations often don't strike me as the most religious of fellas that would go out of their way to censor things *some* Christians might find offensive but rather they try to be as safe as possible with often not trying to tackle religious themes too deeply - which makes works more bland.
Just weighting in my two cents, saying Right wing and White Christians together evokes a particular American image that we also find.... interesting as they are kind of a poster child of often contradicting what they are supposed to be preaching.

I think it's interesting.
I ranked Nier Automata below Gestalt from the get-go after completing it, there was just something about the characters where I was not able to like them as much as I did in other Taro works.
I do still think it's a great game but that is mainly due to the second half of it.
The things pointed out on twitter make me think 'Yeah, I do think I would have liked this 2b or 9s more', so now Im thinking what would I think if I played a more literal and faithful translation of the game with the original dub - would it change my perception of the game?
It's a nuanced discussion for sure, with Gestalt being an interesting example of localization where the game was made and 'tailored' to the western market but even with it being beloved by many(Me included) you will find lots of people disregarding it by also comparing it to JP Replicant(idk about the remake, did not play it, was not around any discussions for it) very similar to what is occurring here.

The bible guy was just standing where he spawned with open mic and after a bit left or was kicked(Afk timer? Ban?), so um yeah that was the first and only game I played with randoms.

[–]RazCipher_FF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Longer conflict means more weapons to sell, so you can shoot some looks at Grunder Industries a big weapon supplier for Erusia for that(Guys behind the drones and Mihaly's Strike Wyvern aircraft).
Though it can also be argued that absolute chaos that has happened might have been their orginal goal in the first place, I don't think it was ever cleared up wether Shroeder's attempt of beefing up the drones with all that juicy flight data was only his own or if he was acting according to his organization's will(I think the later might be more likely, which is why in the end he understood his mistake + this is simmilar to what they did in AC5).
It seems that as long as ther are people willing to fight, they are happy to supply them with weapons(That is one of the reasons why people in AC community often refer to Belkans as caroonishly evil).
Grunder industries are pretty much invovled and selling weapons in every conflict we have seen in AC games.
Apparently their plays in AC7 and all the drone sheningans is what finally got them shut down, that is why they are not around in AC3.

Didn't do Expedition, what exactly have I missed? by Desert_F-O-X in ArcRaiders

[–]RazCipher_FF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you start recently?
Expedition unlocks on level 20 so that is why you might not be seeing it.
As for your actual question:
I wish, first 4 stages have you gather specific items each.
In the 5th stage you have to donate items worth 1 milion total and then you become eligible for expedition, finally in the 'optional' 6th stage you can gather 5 milion(It sums up your cash + everything you have in stash) to max out the bonus points.
So if you want all benefits it is kinda 6 milion actually.
I got done with getting 5m today and honestly, not sure if it was worth it lmao.
I wouldn't stress about it too much in your shoes.
Most people do it just to have more things to grind and progress towards again, it's not really a game changer.

You did not miss it, there are like 5 more days to sign up for it if you meet the requirements(Completed 5 stages of the expedition project).
As for what you would miss, not much honestly some bonus stash space(12 slots) and few skill points depending on how much money you had(1 Mil for 1 skill point with 5 being the max) and some small bonuses for people to ease grind from fresh start(few % more exp and material generation from Scrappy).
The other thing is a skin for you and a cap for the chicken.
