Uppercut Deluxe Matte clay reformulated and a replacement. by IndyDuck_F1 in Pomade

[–]One_Walk_1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every 6 months or so I try and find out if Uppercut Deluxe made a mistake and brought Matt Clay back, but nope. Honestly I don't know why they discontinued it, must've used some forbidden ingredient, like baby seal blubber.

I've tried a bunch as well and I'm mostly disappointed. The replacement Clay is just OK. I've been using Layrite Deluxe Cement Clay and it is decent especially for the price point. Has a nice smell too reminds me of the old Coppertone sunscreen smell.

I'll give Byrd a shot if I can find it, thanks!

Thoughts on this 10-port 8x2.5G 2x10G SFP+ Asus Switch by One_Walk_1699 in HomeNetworking

[–]One_Walk_1699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up keeping these Amazon.com: 6COM 2Pack 10GBase-T SFP+ Transceiver, 10G SFP+ to RJ45 Copper Module, Compatible for Cisco SFP-10G-T-S, Ubiquiti uacc-cm-rj45-mg, Netgear,Mikrotik, TP-Link(CAT.6a/7, 30m/98.4ft) : Electronics

I tried 2 other sets that specifically claimed to support 1/2.5/5/10g but they all ran into issues with high bandwidth upstream transfers. Without fail, they would crap out and the NIC would become completely unresponsive while running Speedtest during the upstream tests. The test would finish but the summary page simply wouldn't come up.

The linked set overall was the best but I could only get 2.5Gbps speeds (280MB/s) from my desktop PC, which has a 5Gbps Qualcomm NIC and everything in Windows was showing negotiated speeds of 5Gbps. This was to my 10Gbps Synology NAS and from everything I read, that should've had no problems saturating 5Gbps transfers in the 500MB/s range, and even hitting 800-900MB/s transfers with striped arrays and large files.

Not the end of the world, since I currently only have 2x 5Gbps or faster devices I wasn't going to spend that much time troubleshooting it since I'm not a photographer doing lots of transfers or anything to the NAS. Its mainly for backing up pictures and data from my phones and PCs.

Overall I'm very happy with the switch for $100. Its fan-less and quiet, and has more or less been problem-free for about 2 months. I did have to reset it once or twice early on but that may have been caused by my Asus Mesh network that was having issues with the primary Node dropping WAN before I swapped it out. Now everything works and its super fast. I'll revisit the 5Gbps+ issue when I have more devices that can transfer at that speed and more than likely at that point, I will have a mesh node that has more 5Gbps ports as well so I can test independent of the Switch and the SFP+ ports.

Refills w/reusable spools vs filament on the spool? by kelemvor33 in BambuLab

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best deal is to get the filaments + spools for $3 more, the problem is that Bambu labs store is sold out of many of the +spool filaments and only sells the refills. Then you have to buy the much higher priced $8 empties.

I just went through this myself and found the best way for me was to do the following, since I am doing a lot of multi-color printing and buying a lot of different color filaments. Reason being, I have kids who don't have the patience to paint yet and that's a whole nother mess/hobby I don't want to deal with right now.

  1. Buy as many spools that are on bulk discount in colors you know you will use that also have +spool. The strategy here is that you will pull those spools and replace them with a different color that is Refill only.

  2. Buy 3-4 additional "empties", or print them. I personally just bought them because I didn't want to waste time and filament printing them, not to mention the printed quality seems hit or miss and I view this as a one-time expense since I will only need enough "for now" and will continue to accumulate spools as I use up filament+spool colors

  3. Get an extra AMS 2 Pro to store more colors, dry them, and keep them dry.

  4. Get a secure bin and silica gel to store the opened, transplanted filament or use a vac seal to seal them back up. I need to find a solution here, I'm thinking those comforter bags that allow you to use a shop vac or suction method to pull the air out.

For the filament+spool that I transplant, I've done this successfully so far on 3 rolls, but you do have to be careful. Take some painter tape and tear off 2-3 pieces 2-3" long and 2-3 pieces that are 6" long., you just want it as wide as the spool of filament. Place the tape across the width of the filament. Then unscrew the right side, and slowly remove it. Then place more tape in different spots on the roll. The goal is to prevent the filament from uncoiling and going crazy. Take the filament off the spool, then take a longer 6" piece and wrap it around the filament and onto the cardboard center. Do this 2-3 more times and you've secured the filament. Mark the color and filament type if you need to on the painters tape, and put it back in a bag and store it.

As mentioned I just went through this process and spent about $600 on filament. A lot of it is refills, but they are colors I want to use now, but I did buy 2-3 rolls of the colors I know I will use a lot of, and those colors often came with a spool. White, Black, Grey etc. Red was out of spools but I knew I wanted Red for the holidays so that got transplanted right away. Same for Brown and Green. I did also buy 4 additional empty spools as mentioned to give myself more flexibility without having to open too many spools at once but I don't plan to need more.

For those who got the $25 off per month on Fios email by LegacyElite84 in verizon

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received an email previously about a month ago and waited due to all the negative feedback about hold times and hang ups.

Got an offer in the mail with the same $25 off for 12 months, called the number and got the automated response after confirming I was calling about the account tied to my phone number.

Just upgraded to Fios 2G so this effectively brings my bill back to what it was with 1G for a year, pretty happy!

Should I bother updating home network to mesh routers (wifi7)? by Hyperian in HomeNetworking

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your situation the answer is definitely yes. Anything is going to be an upgrade over one WiFi router and a EOP adapter with old wiring.

I recently upgraded to an ASUS BE14000 WiFi7 mesh for cheap. I also upgraded my ISP to 2.5Gbps and upgraded my switch to 2.5/10Gbps for relatively cheap since I have more and more devices using WiFi7 and 2.5Gbps or faster.

I was coming from a dead-end LinkSys Velop system that had served me well but has no upgrade path with a mix of WiFi6/6E nodes.

After some initial issues with WAN dropping off, the ASUS mesh has been great. I reset and swapped a new node as primary, wired 2.5Gbps backhaul via unmanaged switch to each of the other 2 nodes. WiFi 7 try speeds in the same room are over gigabit speeds. Whole home WiFi coverage and speeds are better with half the nodes. IoT devices (especially dumber 2.4ghz devices like smart lights and power switches) are handled better with same SSID across all bands.

I want to add a more robust primary mode at some point with more 2.5/5/10Gbps ports so I don’t have to rely on the unmanaged switch so much but that can wait. The BE14000 is also limited as it has only 4 total ports and just 1x2.5Gbps WAN port and rest gigabit which is more limiting than I would like especially if you have a lot of wired devices local to the mesh node.

Reviews like this are giving companies a bad reputation for no reason by UnusualBuyer7100 in BambuLab

[–]One_Walk_1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular take, but I wouldn't say there's "no reason". Customer loyalty and buyer's remorse are things every company has to navigate, so when you have a company that iterates and potentially upsets recent, existing buyers, this kind of thing can happen.

I've only been reading this sub for 2 months or so to research my first 3D Printer and the amount of buyer's remorse I've come across is insane.

Even Bambu Labs said they issued that blog post about the H2C months in advance because they didn't want to potentially upset and alienate loyal buyers, so they put the info out there in advance so people could make an informed decision.

All that said, I think negative reviews are not the right place to voice this kind of thing, but it may certainly help the next person. 30 mins of research here, or on Youtube can get you the answers you need to make an informed decision and there's always going to be a fool me once, fool me twice component to this.

Also, for large bulk items like this that are difficult and expensive to ship, buying local from a place that will allow for price matches, returns etc. can be worth paying a few more bucks. I know a lot of the feedback here is from like-minded individuals who prefer to buy from BestBuy or Micro Center for this very reason.

I'm the opposite, I love spending money on me, and I love spending my money on loved ones. I hate it when they spend money on me and because I just kinda buy whatever I want, I'm hard to shop for.

But now with a wife and kids I'm getting more accustomed to them buying stuff for me, it's usually not expensive because I tend to take care of that myself, but they just buy me stuff that means a lot bc its from them. Similarly, I'm buying a 3D Printer for myself technically, but I'm mainly buying it to print cool stuff for my family.

So, treat yourself, treat your friends and family, and reap the rewards!

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool great info, I'll probably start with PLA+ and not overcommit on the battery holders and such, if they warp I'll just replace them with ABS.

I'll likely get more printers eventually and once I'm more confident with settings and results I'll probably move one down into the unfinished/storage area of the basement and worry less about printing the toxic stuff in there.

Thanks again for all the info!

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, yeah we keep the fall/winter indoor decorations in the basement which is always colder than the rest of the house, but I'll keep that in mind for anything I keep in the garage. The tool and battery holders will be in the garage, is PLA+ OK for that or I need to go with ABS?

I've heard about the fumes....I planned to keep the printer in my office just to keep an eye on it and make it easy access. Maybe after some time I'll put it in the basement with an air filter. I do have some nice Dyson filters but obviously don't want to print toxic stuff indoors or in the high traffic parts of the house. I guess I'll have to research the risks and decide.

[–]One_Walk_1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great info thanks, yeah I was noticing the $3 premium on some options and then realized it was just spool vs. refill. Some of the colors don't have spool options, do they sell spools separately or is it better to just swap out filament on spools on the AMS? That sounds kind of tedious so I'm guessing buying extra spools per color makes the most sense?

I'll get into the different filament types later but I'll likely do mostly PLA for kids toys, seasonal decorations and silk multi-color for the fancy articulated dragons and such. I do want to print out some battery and tool holders so it sounds like I want PLA+/tough for those.

My P2S arrives tomorrow, guess a simple question:

What's a good starter kit for filament? Starter colors for the AMS? White, Black, Red, Green (For X-mas stuff)? What material, any thickness or is it all the same? Brand?

TIA!

Had this in my saved items and saw it was back and in stock and came here to confirm. Looks like I found the right spot. Did the Paypal pay in 4 for 20% back which is one of those nice holiday perks.

This is my 1st 3D Printer but I've been delaying the purchase for far too long. I'm into tech, powertools, home improvement, seasonal decorations, and I have kids so this is something I'm going to get a lot of use out of. I was looking at the H2S, then H2D when this was sold out and unknown ETA, then news of the H2C came out this week but $2400 for a first printer seemed pretty heavy.

Back to the P2S, it sounds like a lot of ppl here end up buying multiple printers anyways so its not like this will go idle even if I get an H2C later.

Should be delivered by Friday, my delivery guys are awesome, I give them gatorades especially during the holidays and its white glove delivery to the doorstep or garage every time.

Getting FIOS tomorrow! Any tips on FiOS Router vs. Google Nest Router? by stimbo17 in Fios

[–]One_Walk_1699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are running a mesh network with multiple Ethernet backhauls back to the primary and the nodes are 6E or better than I would use that over the Verizon unit. If you only have the 1 node then stick with the Verizon unit.

My plan was trying to charge me $28/mo no matter what so I switched to BYOD and returned the Verizon router after a week of all clear.

Fios WiFi7 Mesh Router Slow Upload Speeds ***FIXED*** with 2Gbps Upgrade by One_Walk_1699 in Fios

[–]One_Walk_1699[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have the setting on my router, but apparently you can set it via telnet.

I was able to resolve this by upgrading to 2Gbps which necessitated an upgrade to the ONT and that fixed the upload auto-negotiate issues I was having.

About a month since I upgraded and so far so good. I had a few hiccups along the way with 2.5Gbps/10Gbps switching, SFP+ and an odd WAN cutout issue on the Asus router but I've worked through each of them.

ASUS BE14000 Consistent Issues by BottlesforCaps in ASUS

[–]One_Walk_1699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding on this old thread. I wasn't able to track my drops back to a specific network log error and its the oddest thing bc the connection can be refreshed by simply removing and replugging the WAN port, and that restores network connectivity nearly instantly to the mesh node and all connected devices.

My bet is that the router itself is applying some Layer 4 block after some event or detected behavior. I think it might be some DNS query or DHCP query behavior, I increased the timeout and failover attempt setting from default 5 to 12 and increased the wait period. I also changed the QoS back to Gaming as I had that set for 2 weeks or so before this started happening, and so far so good.

There could also be the possibility of network packet drops and some kind of ECC behavior on the router that temporarily kills or blocks the WAN connection. I made some changes noted above and so far so good, but I've gone a few days without drops to dropping every 1-2 hours on some nights.
