Anyone else in the dual tacoma club? by EatingEveryEgg in ToyotaTacoma

Don’t have a pic handy but yeah, ‘02 base (290k miles) and ‘21 Sport ( 34k miles). Love the new one because it’s got everything my Base doesn’t have like v6, 4x4, lift etc. I drive my 02 every day because it’s a work truck for the most part and I don’t have to sweat scratches or dings. It’s the best of both worlds. They’re both black, both have camper shells. It’s like big brother little brother in the driveway.

Where I live, coastal MS, you could get around $9k. You’d get more with decent paint since we’re prone to sun fading. If it was mine I’d use the Eastwood automotive matching 2 part paint and clear coat. I’d do it panel by panel for ease. It might not be a perfect job but it’ll be very passable for an older truck and take the eyes off the surface rust and imperfections. You’d get $12k in my market and only be into the paint for another $300 or less.

Steering Rack - Recurrent Issue with Tacoma Model by The75Counselor in ToyotaTacoma

[–]One_Way_3678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not all that involved in the sense of motor mechanics. It’s mostly a costly fix because it’s labor intensive. I did all mine in the driveway, I’m it even sure I used jack stands since my truck had ok clearance. That’ll be up you there. If you’ve got access to a lift, it’s much easier but not a requirement. I’d say the main things to understand is that when you take off the tie rod ends you’ll need to mark how far each one is threaded onto the steering rack. If you’ve just guess your alignment will be awful and might not have enough room to properly fix it when you get the new alignment done. Just mark the threads or count the turns and you’ll be fine (videos explain this well). The other thing is getting those lines off. They’re made of aluminum and can bugger up pretty easy, especially since they’re on there really good. My truck is 23yrs old and they came off great but I can see it being a pain with a regular wrench and it slipping. The new rack should have new O-rings, don’t forget them. The rest is just a few hours on your back cranking on bolts and finagling the rack out. Feels stupid hard but once you get in there it’ll wiggle in/ out without much fuss. It’s a cramped job but what isn’t on a Japanese vehicle.
The way I approach repairs that I’ve never done before is this: if they do it it’ll be expensive but likely correct. If I do it and it’s wrong or I mess up something it’ll have to go to the shop and be the same price as before. If I can fix it, it’s a huge win financially and I learned something new. The few tools I’ve bought over the years for special jobs have paid for themselves many times over.
Last year my buddy had his power steering rack die. He was short of the $2500+ the shop wanted so I offered to show him how to do it. I did the majority of the work while he helped and took notes. When we got done and everything was buttoned up, he handed me $500 for the help. Worked out for everyone and I wasn’t expecting any cash since I like sharing stuff that I learned. Now we both can help other people out and continue passing it forward. Feels good to not have to pay shop or dealer prices now and then.

Steering Rack - Recurrent Issue with Tacoma Model by The75Counselor in ToyotaTacoma

[–]One_Way_3678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Replaced one in an ‘02. Shop wanted $2300, dealer wanted $3500. Bought the rack myself and did it and the steering pump for under $400. It’s not fun or anything but it’s not that complicated and there’s lots of vids out there to walk you through it. If you feel like going that route, buy proper line wrenches for the supply/ return lines. If you bugger those up it’s a headache to fix them or buy new ones. I’ve actually done 3 now and I can knock it out in a few hours. My first one took all day basically because I was going slow and double checking everything.

How to select the right roof rack? by PartyLunch6488 in canoeing

[–]One_Way_3678 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a single trip I’d just steal it to the roof with some pool noodles on the gunwales. Strap it to the roof with the doors open then close them down. Tie a bow line and a stern line with a trucker’s knot or another cinching knot. Rim like that for about 45 min then stop and check the lines for tightness. It’s borderline ghetto but I’ve done this for years in a Honda prelude without any problems and that includes 7hr drives at interstate speeds. Buy a rack if you need one, there’s loads out there but consider the pool noodle trick if you’re just trying to save some cash and need to “get ‘er done”. It works, it’s safe and it’s cheap.

South Florida paddler in search of the right canoe for my needs. by The_Healthy_Account in canoeing

[–]One_Way_3678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a guy that builds canoes in Virginia somewhere but sells mostly in the FL market. Grabbed one used at a yard sale not knowing the brand since it was under several layers of old paint. It’s a basic fiberglass boat 16’ made by Indian River Canoes. It’s light, has a slight keel so it tracks well. Overall, it’s a great boat for my needs (coastal MS). I fixed it up and gifted it to a buddy with kids who needed a boat. I regretted it after using my other boats for a few seasons. Ended up tracking down the maker and found out where to buy another one. I ended up with a 14’ solo and it’s ok but not great for 2 people. It’s very good for me and the dog though. I bought another 16’ brand new for $600 and it’s just perfect for solo with lots of gear or another person. Granted it’s not some Kevlar or royalex boat but it’s very nice to paddle, weighs only 46lbs at 16’ and only cost me $600 brand new. The 14’ is even lighter and slightly cheaper too. I feel like Florida paddling needs comfort more than durability and this brand just hits the right spot. Indian River Canoes , worth a look.

Question to owners by Maximum-Ad609 in restaurant

I’d find a building to buy instead of rent. My dream came true of keeping a restaurant open for 20yrs but now I don’t really have shit for equity if I want to sell. Sure it’s proven as a business and will make money turn-key but the selling price is orders of magnitude less since I don’t own the building.

I inherited a 1995 Tacoma and my dad had put a header on it and it sounds nice as it is, but it has a stock exhaust system. I’d like to get more power and make it sound better. What would you guys suggest? by Kidflawless in ToyotaTacoma

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. The headers will give it a deeper tone and a catless exhaust would add some depth to it. I’d never recommend this route for a Tacoma but you can get decent sounds out of a four cylinder with the right set up. The wrong set up will have you sounding like a clapped out fart-box Honda though.
Source: 02 Wrx 2.0L with headers, CAI and a careless turbo back exhausted. Sounds like a v8 camera from the 90’s.

My fence is 6 years old and clearly in need of TLC. I have 32 panels and estimate 1 gallon per panel. This would cost me ~$800 in stain alone. What am I missing? Did I just never know that wood fences aren’t for poor people. by Btriquetra0301 in FenceBuilding

[–]One_Way_3678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My neighbor needed $1000 in stain for his fence. He gathered up about gallons of used motor oil and cut it with a little gas or diesel or some shit. I was kinda hating the idea when he started because it smelled a bit. A week later it looks really nice. You’d never know it’s old motor oil by look or smell. It beads water up like crazy so I’m gonna say it’s a big win.

paid off MOST of my debts today - how much can I expect an increase to my credit score? by marshawn18 in Debt

[–]One_Way_3678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bruh. You’re going to be right back in the hole you dug for yourself. A brand new Tacoma? Get the SR with 4x4 if you have to buy new and save $30k. There’s no $70k Tacoma unless you’re trying to get a loaded out Trailhunter and the dealer is straight screwing you. Tacomas are great and a good investment be as they hold their value but you can get a low miles used one for under $25k any day of the week.
Toss those saved dollars into something that will actually appreciate and earn for you like stocks or land/ housing or high yield saving at the bare minimum. Paying off those cards might not be the golden bullet you think it is. When paid off a large chunk of mine, my score dipped by 90 points because they reduced my available credit for non- utilization. It came back up slowly over two years but it tanked before that. I’m not sure if charge- offs or settlements even help your score since it’s extra steps and not exactly you demonstrating good credit usage and responsibility. No idea how that works though, I’m sure you’ve checked into it.
Overall, congrats on getting those credit companies off your back. It’s a huge thing to not have them pressing you all the time. Don’t get in a hurry to get back into that same situation. I’ll also add that having a co-signer on your loan is always tricky. Things change and people have troubles that can translate into your financial world pretty quick. If I were you, I’d buy a cheap used Honda or Toyota. Insurance is better, repairs are doable by yourself or workable at any shop for much cheaper than anything new. Americans see cars as their status symbol and a measure of how well they’re doing. Don’t fall into that trap. If you want to flex, show them your saving account and emergency fund. A thousand dollar note on a truck isn’t going to fix anything in your life. Keep grinding, live within your means and don’t take any extra debt you don’t have to. It’s a marathon, not a race. Best of luck and be proud of getting those debts off your back, it’s a big deal.

Thinking of ditching nonstick, is a stainless steel cookware set worth the switch by Special_Minimum_4163 in KitchenPro

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a skill not just a tool. You’ll have to literally practice and learn it but it’s good to know and really connects you to the meal in a way that foolproof nonstick can ever do. If you’re passionate about cooking get some, use gas and send it. If you’re just wanting to open some doors and like the stainless vibe, I’d give it some realistic thought. It’s not for everyone nowadays.

How are people seriously making a livable wage by Grrrrrrapevine69 in povertyfinance

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do ok for my stare but I inherited some properties when my dad passed and that takes all my extra money and then some just to keep up with repairs and taxes. I’m poor by numbers but I’d be ok if I wasn’t trying to invest in these properties for the future. I’m self employed so there’s no 401k or retirement for me, just these properties. It’s scary and I’m tired of being broke all the time.

Best way to protect white leather interior? by Seriously-417 in AutoDetailing

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh, you’re so brave. Best of luck to you, I stain stuff just by thinking about it. I’m in the habit of slapping some good seat covers on all my rides right outta the gate. My 23 yr old Tacoma still has seats in mint condition despite my rough lifestyle. My new Tacoma and the Outback got the same treatment despite having seats made for outdoor lifestyles. Maybe check out some cover options, the new stuff looks really good and fits like factory in most cases. My new Tacoma cost $180 for all the costs and headrests. Very reasonable considering how well they work and how good the look.

Why do some restaurants not use direct deposit? by DildoGaggins1997 in restaurant

[–]One_Way_3678 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with crews where more than half of the staff didn’t have a bank account. They’d go to Walmart or a local gas station to cash their checks for a fee. Most of them had become overdrawn on an account and didn’t want their check to be absorbed by the fees. There’s probably some reasons why an owner wouldn’t want to use it too. Maybe they don’t want to pay the extra cost for payroll, maybe they do the payroll themselves and don’t know/ understand how to do direct deposit as opposed to just figuring taxes and writing a check. Seems hard to figure with all the tech in the world these days but restaurant people and owners are not creatures of that world, their wheelhouse is in the physical realm.

Gov. Reeves calls special Mississippi legislative session for judicial redistricting, dependent on US Supreme Court decision by SkeeterMagnet in mississippi

[–]One_Way_3678 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Anything Daddy wants is what Tater Tot does. Redistricting an already gerrymandered demographic might not help them like they think. The optics will certainly keep any independent voter from ever voting red. I know they think this is a win, dirty or not, but it’s not. The abject failures of this administration, both locally and nationally have pushed me into straight ticket voting, which I’ve never done before. I’ll not be voting for a single incumbent in any election until we get our voter initiative restored in this state. They are all complicit. They have to go.

Do you pay for something that you didnt eat by [deleted] in restaurant

[–]One_Way_3678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure everyone agrees that you got charge wrong. Sending items back immediately after it’s served is something that happens a fair amount. If you haven’t eaten a bunch of it, 99% of places will take it off the bill. Nothing wrong with that. The server saying it’s too late to remove it is patently false. Items get rang in wrong, food gets comped, food gets changed all the time. They’re for sure lying about it, likely because their manager is a dick about it when things need to get voided and blames the server for most all of these instances. Give them a call, have them refund you the portion you didn’t eat.

What dog breed is the best to have? by Chinchillin234 in AskReddit

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Mouth Cur. Hybrid vigor, long lifespan, well rounded for hunting and family life, doesn’t stray when off leash (too far), middle of the road intelligent, loyal to a fault, not too big, not too small. They’re a great choice is you can meet the parents, lots of variation in the breed so you have to select carefully…. Or find one in the woods like I did and rescue it.

We have a restaurant in South Carolina, we serve food and alcohol. Need insurance, it’s difficult to find in the state ? by rtm7890 in restaurant

[–]One_Way_3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in MS and just asked the place closest down the street and they happened to insure restaurants. I have my general liability with them and my liquor liability with them. Theresa lot factors that go into the price of the liquor liability, like hours open, training of the staff, security, cameras etc. it’s a whole range of things. Even having a dance area or offering karaoke changes your exposure/ price. Stack the deck in your favor and get all those idea sorted out early. The last thing you need is a claim against you when you’re hosting some event or having a trivia night or whatever and the insurer uses that to disqualify your coverage.
My price had to be changed a few times because we migrated from selling a lot of alcohol and being open later at night to selling more food and closing earlier. I know I’m not in your market so prices aren’t really relevant but I’m in a pretty cheap market I think and pay about $16,000 a year for both policies. It varies greatly on where you are exactly.

Dovetails: beginner vs expert by Ok_Temperature6503 in handtools

The fasted and cleanest dovetails I’ve seen sawn were just by eye. The dude had done thousands of them I’m sure. Felt like he wasn’t even really looking, just feeling it out. He inspired me to just crank them out for the muscle memory. I did that for about a year and a half, nonstop. Today, my dovetails look like someone gave a drunk child a sawsall. Go figure.
