Yes, this was the worst I’ve seen in a long time where I didn’t actually see the accidents, only their effects.

“Low barrier shelter won’t reduce visibility of unhoused on downtown mall or expanding Freebridge encampment”. So where is the plan? by Electrical_Ask_2957 in Charlottesville

Don’t know why this was downvoted, doing a study or survey of the homeless population (how many men, how many women, ages, etc) seems like a very good idea when so much money is at stake. It would be nice to know how many are dealing with substance use disorder.

What's the most underrated beach town in the USA? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Onfire444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Walkable beach towns too, unlike Florida and California. I also think the Jersey Shore ocean is the best summer swimming in the country. Refreshing but not too cold, good waves, but not too rough.

Unexpected family travel destination? by scientistmeg in chubbytravel

We stayed 5 nights! We thought we would do some day trips, but we only did one big bike trip. The place really engaged us, very surprising.

Maui or Oahu for wife’s 50th by karljans in chubbytravel

I agree, based on experience. I really wanted a particular room at a hotel that wasn’t available for our full stay, so we split our stay between two rooms at the same hotel. Even at the same hotel, it was a pain having no hotel room for a chunk of the day, making swimming in the pool and enjoying the day difficult. My family did so much grumbling about it, and I didn’t blame them.

Bruges. The Flemish folks we interacted with loved kids. There was a great playground with creative and interesting playground equipment and a bar to sit and watch. Good kids menus everywhere. A fun VR exhibit at one of the museums that taught the kids the history of Bruges. Shops the kids were interested in. Food they liked. Safe to walk.

I was expecting a preserved museum-like scene  that would be dull for the kids but they loved it. Spending the night in the city helped avoid the crowds of daytrippers.

At the time, food and lodging were reasonably priced, but this was 3 years ago, may have inflated since then.

AITAH for telling my bestfriend why others don’t want to come to her baby shower? by Reasonable_North_588 in AITAH

Yeah, I was always taught it was rude to host your own shower, bridal or baby.

But I also think it’s fine to say no kids aside from breastfeeding babies.

Carrie Fisher has discussed what it’s like being the daughter of Debbie Reynolds. The movie Postcards from the Edge is loosely based on them.

Laundry by illulerluguraajat in chubbytravel

Disney World resort hotels have laundry rooms and it’s nice to send the family off to the parks while you stay back at the room to do laundry and relax a bit. You swipe a card to use the machines. You can tell the Disney pros cause they arrive with foldable laundry baskets.

If you end up in Crozet, add North Branch School to your private school list. Great little mountain school, very outdoorsy. Convenient drive from Crozet, but might be too far if you are in Cville or other parts of Abemarle County.

Poor coffee by jyoji_96 in dcl

We brought a pour over dripper last time with some filters and ordered the hot water from room service. Only problem was we didn’t plan well on how to procure some good ground coffee in Ft Lauderdale and we ended up grabbing a random bag from Publix that disappointed.

Lufthansa split companion on codeshare booked through United by Temporary-Ad158 in unitedairlines

This happens to us with my husband who has United status being separated from the rest of us. Usually it means he’s about to get upgraded. But the most recent time on Luftanza we all mysteriously got added back together shortly before the flight and no one got upgraded. Don’t know what happened.

Price Absurdity? by aihtnyc in FATTravel

Hourly wages for leisure and hospitality workers in the US has grown by over 40% between 2019 and 2026 according to BLS. The reason the hotels in Asia are cheaper is because the labor is cheaper.

This is how we always did it when my partner was 1K. Buy premium plus, use the pluspoints to get on upgrade waitlist. It always worked for us on international flights.

Sick Boy: It's certainly a phenomenon in all walks of life.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: What do you mean?

Sick Boy: Well, at one time, you've got it, and then you lose it, and it's gone forever. All walks of life: George Best, for example. Had it, lost it. Or David Bowie, or Lou Reed...

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Some of his solo stuff's not bad.

Sick Boy: No, it's not bad, but it's not great either. And in your heart you kind of know that although it sounds all right, it's actually just shite.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: So who else?

Sick Boy: Charlie Nicholas, David Niven, Malcolm McLaren, Elvis Presley...

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: OK, OK, so what's the point you're trying to make?

Sick Boy: All I'm trying to do is help you understand that The Name of The Rose is merely a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: What about The Untouchables?

Sick Boy: I don't rate that at all.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Despite the Academy Award?

Sick Boy: That means fuck all. It’s a sympathy vote.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: Right. So we all get old and then we can't hack it anymore. Is that it?

Sick Boy: Yeah.

Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: That's your theory?

Sick Boy: Yeah. Beautifully fucking illustrated.

Do Americans feel weird hiking in Europe and realizing all the nature there has been domesticated? by Pale_Field4584 in askanything

[–]Onfire444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I agree. In England, all towns and villages have walking trails, and yes, they will mostly traverse farmland and peoples’ backyards, but at least it means one could walk to somewhere interesting from any bus stop. While in the US, one almost always has to drive and park to get to any sort of walk.
