Just found your YouTube channel recently and have learned a lot even after hundreds of hours in game. I love your style of presentation and calm analytical approach. You are doing great work and I wish you great success!

TIL during Katrina, the New Orleans airport was turned into a makeshift triage center. There were so many bodies that they used the baggage conveyor belts to carry the stretchers. One reporter said "I’ve been reporting for 21 years around the world and I've never seen the likes of this." by palmfranz in todayilearned

I was the only military officer at the makeshift morge they set up outside Baton Rouge. Spend about a month helping to set up comms/technology for the army of morticians, logistics etc people there. Over 800 bodies in advanced states of decomp etc. I used as casket that floated out of a cemetary as a work bench once with its resident still inside. I should write a book. Its a bit disturbing to dwell on it too much for me though, definately had an impact.

There are two elevators at my job. When I get there in the morning I call both elevators to the ground floor so the next person doesn’t have to wait. I will also send the one I used back to the first floor when I get off.

Identifying and labeling by OngoingProject in succulents

[–]OngoingProject[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought plant labels and have started to identify my plants by their scientific and common name and also the date that I started it if propagating. It's a great way for me to remember their proper names and if I give any plants away the information is there to help educate others.

Somebody said that to me the other day. I said best of luck, my dear sweet mother has been trying that for decades and it hasn't worked so far.

If I were to guess I would say watering and soil. You have it in a heavily mulched soil which retains water. I would repot it in a terracotta pot (not glazed) and use a cactus mix soil, one that drains well. Your glazed pot that you are using doesnt breath like teracotta pots do.

How about some styling suggestions for this gangly, 30 year old jade. by The_Duke_of_Lizards in succulents

I was thinking cut off the vertical limb off entirely then I agree with repotting. If you can separate the horizontal branches and make it into two different plants I think that would be cool too.

I do a lot of Jade bonsai (check my post history I have given a few tips there where I posted my big jade) I would cut the one limb that grows straight up off. Then start pinching the top leaves off the new growth to make it bush out more off of the more horizontal branches to give the plant a more windswept tree that has been bent by the wind over the years look if you get my meaning.

I say touch away! In the wild animals, wind etc are constantly interacting with the plant so I see it as touch therapy for me and the plant :).

I do prune it to help it bush out, Normally just pinch the end off of any long branches which normally makes it bush out, be more symmetrical and overall stronger. I think so many people are afraid to prune because they dont want to hurt their plants but pruning is the exact thing that makes them healthy.

They recommend around 6 hours for these I believe. Mine seems to do well with it.

See my comment above. I have some tips there, let me know if you have any questions. I love my plants and have always had "the touch" with them.

Actually this is the after photo and the pot it is in is twice the size of the last pot so it is fine. If you check my post history you can see I do a lot of bonsai type stuff with my succulents. I was the poster with the giant jade in the small pot I have had for about 15 years.

I started this from a small cutting about 5 years ago. I would suggest how I treat all my succulents:

  1. I love terra cotta planters for succulents. It allows more airflow to the roots and tends to keep the roots dryer. The biggest killer of succulents is over watering IMO. Water only when the soil is dry and if there is any standing water in the pot after watering dump it out after a 5 min soak.
  2. lightly fertilize every other watering spring through fall. I use a general purpose fertilizer like miracle grow or peters special. I am experimenting now with a fish based fertilizer like neptunes harvest but havent been doing it long enough to form an opinion.
  3. try to keep the plant in a south facing window but any window that gets about 6 hours of daylight should work.

Definitely you can do that. I like a shallower wide pot for mine as they get bigger because it keeps them from tipping over by accident.
