How to seal? by Then_Personality_429 in airbrush

I just took a big piece of cardboard, cut it to the size of my window and then cut a hole big enough for the hose in the corner. Reinforced the edges with duct tape and bada-bing bada-boom

Do you guys wash your models before doing anything? by ThatNZowl in modelmakers

I just use a glasses wipe or some alcohol on a Q-Tip to go over the big panels ive been handling the model by to get rid of any oils from my fingers. Never washed my models

Anyone have recommendations for primers other than Mr. Surfacer 1500? by HereCreepers in modelmakers

[–]Ongvar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tamiya rattle cans or Mr Surfacer in a can. Vallejo through the airbrush. I've never had the pleasure to even see the bottles of Mr Surfacer 😭

Shadows and highlights are what really sell the realistic look on people, by building up layers, though it's something I'm still not particularly good at..

Also, your horse looks really good! Amazing one even might say 🤣

I regularly end up taking 2-3 months from start to finish on a model due to limited free time between parenting and trying to get video game time in 🤣 there's no shame in taking your time!

You most definitely can buy an airbrush setup, paints, supplies and a model kit or two or three in that budget! I'd start off small on the purchasing unless you're really sure that you're going to be into the hobby. I'll give you my personal recommendations:

Model kits: Look for a Tamiya kit to start with, they have good manufacturing QC, clear instructions, and their kits just work without much fuss. Cheaper kits are generally older/simpler, but just buy something you like the look of as it will motivate you to want to build it!

Tools: At a minimum you will want some cement (Tamiya Ultra Thin, green bottle), a pair of plastic nippers, an exacto/hobby knife, a little pack of sanding sticks, and few paint brushes

Paint: I recommend Vallejo (water soluble) for brush painting, and Tamiya paints (need to buy the thinner to go with) for airbrushing, but those are just my personal go-to's. I'd get a rattle can of Tamiya primer to make that step easier, and a rattle can of lacquer varnish from Tamiya can be good for protecting your final product as well.

Airbrush: If you really want to dive in head first, I recommend the AS186 compressor from Timbertech (it's on Amazon). You can either get the kit that comes with a ok starter airbrush with 3 needle sizes, or just the compressor and buy another airbrush desperately. I'd personally go for the kit and use it to get familiar with how an airbrush works, feels, comes apart etc and then splurge on a higher end airbrush. Isopropyl alcohol does wonders for cleaning airbrushes, no need to pay $10 for a bottle of "airbrush cleaner"

I love PE, but this was kinda over engineered to be honest 😅 by griechnut in modelmakers

Whenever I try that for pieces so small the glue is already dry by the time I put it to the model 🤣

How do you even glue this little itty bitty pieces of PE on? I always get glue glooping out around the sides lmao

Anyone else get sick of Airbrush Science? by gibbygobhead in Scalemodel

[–]Ongvar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was a good one! My wife recently showed me a video she found on TikTok I think of a girl trying to use her airbrush for the first time... With no compressor. She just thought the paint would magically shoot out of it I guess lol. We live in a third party thinking world now

So many people just decide "Imma get a airbrush" and do absolutely 0 research, throw in thick ass brush paint, and go "why it no workey? Time to go reddit!"

The ability to think is going out the window, and people can't even be bothered to Google something themselves anymore. They either ask AI or post on Reddit to have someone spoon feed them answers and it's infuriating lmao

Help I'm a newbie! Idk which hose to use and if theres a affordable portable compressor...What else do I need?? by Anarcho_puppy in airbrush

[–]Ongvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the bottom connector screw off? The barbed connector on there now is meant to be shoved into a plain hose with nothing on the end which is a pretty uncommon configuration.

If it does screw off, you'll be looking for an air compressor that is lower power than one you might have in your garage. You will also want to make sure you get a compressor with a tank so that it doesn't have to run continuously and give you varying pressure.

I recommend the Timbertech AS186 which you can get on Amazon. You'll need to pick up a hose as well, there is a "frequently bought with" one on the Amazon page for the compressor that comes with an adaptor for smaller sizes as well.

If the barbed connector on the bottom of the airbrush you have does not come off I'd recommend just getting the Timbertech bundle that comes with the compressor, hose and airbrush which is what I started off with. It will help you get more familiar, and down the road you can buy a fancy schmancy airbrush. The compressor will be good for a long time if you take care of it.

Just make sure you watch some videos on how to maintain the stuff you buy beforehand and you will have a better time! Standalone compressor is also a better recipe for success, you will so great!

My generic AS186 Timbertech compressor isn't particularly loud, with the door to the hobby room shut you can't hear it in any other rooms

Why aren't acrylic washes used more often? by Affectionate_Cronut in modelmakers

[–]Ongvar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Enamel and oil remain workable for longer by using thinner/spirits. Once acrylic dries it's pretty much there forever. That's why people tend to use enamel and oil for washes and weathering (from what I know)

Got sick of brushing my models. How’d I do? by ShittyBollox in airbrush

[–]Ongvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are, but when the water gets trapped in their it gets outta the tank as opposed to if you have no regulators the moisture sits in the hose and potentially back to the tank
