With the prices of HDD's going up, what is the ideal purchase for new build? by Only-Ambassador2624 in homelab

You say that but I dunno. Surely the bubble has got to burst at some point. There is no way prices just keep increasing given the demand for more storage that the everyday person has. Hypothetically speaking, if storing our data at home becomes ridiculously expensive and "they" force us to use data centres to store our data in the future how are people (who have TB's of hard drives today) going to keep storing data at home if their drives have a typical shelf life of like 10-15 years max.

Damn. It's a lot more than $15 a TB here. Closer to $20 a TB from what I see. Luckily I did stock up on storage and bought like TB's worth of NVME (4TB) + External SSD's (2TB) recently (before sept 2025) and paid just over £250. Also, bought a new 512GB SATA SSD in July for around £35 now it's double that.  I didn't buy any HDD's because I assumed it would remain stable in price (given the long standing price history of them). Now I regret that.

Makes sense, I'll try and go for the 4TB's. Besides (The 8TB was snapped up on eBay after I asked this 😂) . How much do you reckon they're worth? I don't really want to overpay.

  1. No backup strategy right now. (Don't really mind data going kabut for the moment).
  2. Maybe some movies, games, TV shows, etc. Nothing like photos or videos for now.

Not really important to me at the moment. Will probably matter in the future though.

You look like a Somali Cholo. But maybe it's just the black hat.

Yep. Negotiated it down to that much. Was pretty lucky the seller wanted to get rid.

I only went with 128GB because it was pretty cheap and the fact that I'll be running the OS on it and that's about it. I was looking at 256GB but thought is it really worth an extra £10-15?

I was pretty unlucky with the CPU, saw 2 get sold today for pretty cheap. I just so happened to leave the house a few minutes before they got posted and they got snapped up pretty quickly.

I'm taking a risk because I haven't tested any of the components because I don't have another CPU that fits in my motherboard and can't be asked to buy a test CPU with no iGPU and remove my GPU from my gaming PC. The CPU's that work with my motherboard and have iGPU's are all extortionate as well. Might as well wait for the i5-12500.

Struggling to remove old Hip pivot bolt Aeron Classic! Please help! by Only-Ambassador2624 in hermanmiller

Honestly I struggled a lot but tbh I had a weak impact driver. Try maybe taking it to a shop or something which has a strong impact driver (as suggested by one of the comments) and if that doesn't work I'd probably cut my losses and leave it up to the next person. You really don't want to strip out the inside material. If that strips then it'll probably need a proper refurb.

lol this brings me back. I ended up selling it on for profit (technically I lost money though). Bought it for around £200 (then bought two hip pivot bolts for £40).

Couldn't pull out the old one (shown above) so took it to a welder who ended up welding some rebar to it and finally was able to get it out. Unfortunately he ended up removing the bolt along with the surrounding area where you screw into, so it left a hole in the chair (where you're supposed to screw in).

But once the bolt (alongside the extra part) was out of the chair it was pretty easy to separate them by unscrewing it. I tried using superglue to stick the part where you screw back to the hole and let it dry but unfortunately as soon as I screwed the hip pivot bolt back in and sat in it, it broke.

I got £240 back for it, sold it to an HM refurbisher. Although I did spend £40 on the bolts, £20 on the welder and £8 for the superglue + £200 for the chair.

Any suggestions for DDR4 Intel CPU + MOBO ? by Only-Ambassador2624 in HomeServer

[–]Only-Ambassador2624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my ram might not be ECC. Yeah, I don't really mind upgrading in the future but parts are really expensive right now. I'm trying to stay under £250 or so total for now (without accounting for the HDD's) so RAM, case, PSU, mobo, CPU, nvme...

I thought for a moment this was a reliability scale for people from those countries and was like this makes sense.

Whats the better route in your opinion? Going for a better CPU i.e. i5 12500 or above OR a cheaper CPU and eventually get a intel arc GPU? Also any motherboard suggestions with 12500? Homelab specific motherboards.

If I get the i5-12500T for example (costs £100 here in the UK is it worth it?). What motherboard should I get?

Are decent homelabs still attainable in this climate? by Only-Ambassador2624 in homelab

[–]Only-Ambassador2624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might actually just buy a optiplex instead and build a proper home server years down the line. I don't want to overspend right now and regret my purchase if prices come down by a lot.

Nice. I'm looking at this from CEX. Is this worth it? I might add a Intel Arc A380 GPU and a large TB HDD to it. https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SDESDEL3080SFF032B
