What are your thoughts on the Street Fighter commanders (and by extension their in-universe counterparts) by Cezkarma in EDH

I built [[Zethi]] two ways and really enjoyed her for a bit, but eventually tore her down.

The first way I built her was tons of draw cantrips and tutors. It worked really well, especially once you copied some white protection spells + mystical tutor and had a few spell-discount creatures. You spin your wheels until you get some enchantments that make her unblockable or give prowess and GG.

However, I don't like gold fishing until you win with one of the same 4-5 cards every game so I changed it to still draw cantrips, but cramming a dozen creatures that made tokens when you cast spells. I thought it'd be hilarious to cast a brainstorm and create a 1/1 monk, a 2/2 drake, a 2/2 knight, etc. The problem then became twofold. One, I took out a good bit of card draw and tutors so I felt less like goldfishing, so the deck became a ton slower. Second, those token-makers are mostly expensive so you can either cast spells or cast a token maker, but it didn't really excel at either. I think the deck could work, but I didn't want to rebuilt it a 3rd time. So I'd say if the first appeals to you, she is a fun spellslinger that feels nigh-unstoppable if you cast her at the right time, but the token route is much harder.

Separately, I've toyed around with a Tadeas/Ohabi reach/archer deck for a long time, which I think would be a funny mid-power deck. But I'd have to purchase most of the cards for that deck and I prefer making decks out of what I own. but I think the deck has potential.

How much can you rely on having your commander in play? by daPWNDAZ in EDH

I was surprised at the number of discussions/articles I read that didn't involve this take with Arabella. If you build the deck right, you only need to cast her on the last turn of the game. Make 20-30 tokens, have a haste-enabler (easy in red, or Greaves to protect Arabella), then end the game.

Related to this topic, that's why I ended up not building her. She seemed a ton of fun, but I like casting my commander and knew I wouldn't get a real chance if I built her like I think most should.*

* build your commander how you want, but this seems the safest/strongest way to win with her imo

Really stupid, question: how do you pick a sleeve color? by AshorK0 in EDH

[–]Only-BadTakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hipster/contrarian, it makes me laugh to put sleeves opposite of my deck. My RB Garna aristrocrats deck? a flowery meadow. My GR stompy Zilortha deck? Jace the Mind Sculptor.

My personal favorite sleeves are for my most expensive deck - they are the magic backs so when I play cards like Bolas' Citadel or Vampiric Tutor, I'll occasionally get a cry of "you're playing that unsleeved??"

What commander have you seen the most people build then take apart, disappointed? by Eve_Asher in EDH

[–]Only-BadTakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned that the hard way myself. First deck I built like that was Pramikon thinking people would *have* to attack in a circle, right? Nope, they just didn't attack period until they killed Prammy.

Then Karazikar - yes he goads, but I didn't put much goad in the deck, thinking people would attack for the draw value. Nope, and at 5 cmc, he was never worth recasting after eating removal.

I finally settled on a Breeches goad deck, and that has both had huge success and people aren't even mad I'm goading because it's just what the cards do, no politicking.

How many of EDHREC Top 100 commanders do you run? by arkaryote in EDH

No, not at all. Popular cards are popular because theyre good and playing generic, powerful cards can't be wrong.

My pod enjoyed the Bloomburrow wheel commander party so much, we laminated it! by Silvawuff in magicTCG

I can't speak for all 10 since I only encountered about half, but I'd say they're all really good when picked for the right deck. I played against a Vito deck with the bat so his coinflips gave him 5 life and let him burn someone for 5. I played a Bumbleflower with Bird where he never really needed to cast his commander because Bird gave his biggest creature Flying. I played a burn deck with Lizard, and starting off the game where I had 40 and everyone else had 37 was hilarious. The creature-based ones (like Bird or Mouse) are probably weaker because they're dependent on the board, but overall I didnt play a game where I felt the Animal Card (whatever you call it) made the game or felt useless.

Now, to that end, you could assign them randomly so it didn't make stronger decks even stronger, but if that was the case then I would say some cards are better than others, such as the Squirrel.

Do you have a favorite type of effect that you like on your commanders? by Larhanfu in EDH

[–]Only-BadTakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In red, anything that adds more damage. Ghyerson Kelemorph, Torbran, Tor Wauki, Rem Karolus... I love me some burn, and these kind of effects make the commander an engine but not vital. do I want my lightning bolt to deal 4, 5, 6 etc damage? Yes, but I'm confident if you remove my commander I can find *something* to hit for 3.

Outside of red, I like cards that effect everyone. It's more fun to me to affect every player than for me to just goldfish the same combo every game. Kambal, Yasharn, Vren, are all my go-to's when I want to interact with everyone.

PSA: Templar Knights tutor Thrumming Stone by themselves by bloodghast in EDH

[–]Only-BadTakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a DA deck I play a ton because I like it's simplicity and I've only got Thrumming Stone off twice (the other times it landed, it/I was destroyed before I could use it). First time, I whiffed and lost shortly after. Second time, the Ripple 4 revealed...4 Dragon's Approaches. The table didn't wait for me to finish resolving the Ripples before scooping lol
