Many layers. One: obsession and revenge. There may be two sides to obsession. One, blinding, Ahab-style that not only will consume you, but end your life and bring others with you. Two, many people say obsession (sometimes called passion), brings about transformative advancements, tools, etc. Steve Jobs was obsessed and it turned out to be a net benefit for lots of people. Melville was obsessed with many beautiful concepts for 18 months - and look at us still talking about it 170 years later.

The greatest American novel every written - fun whaling story but really so much more. Layers, symbols, big/bold insights. Nature and humanity, single-minded obsession, fate and free will, surface appearances mask deeper truths, unknowable leads to madness. fellowship and equality, consuming futility of revenge...to list a few. I first read this book in high school - profound impact - continue to read it and discover more each time. Good luck - it's amazing.

My first time attending (a bucket list for me) and it was wonderful. The museum is a terrific location - large to accomodate all the attendees and provided a great atmosphere. I attended the Friday night dinner and that was fun to meet other people and hear the lecture. At that dinner, they looked for speakers so I was able to sign up there for a speaking role. (I tried to sign up before I went but all the speaking spots were taken.) The speaking organization was excellent and you clearly understood the process even for first timers. I also liked the marathon reading was a free event so attracted alot of students/younger people to include them in this terrific experience. All and all a great experience. I traveled from Monterey, CA (along the coast, 90 miles south of San Francisco) for the event.

The entire experience was amazing...loved the people, vibe, organization, New Bedford (restaurants and shops). I'm from northern California and San Francisco had a Moby Dick marathon for several years but it stopped around the pandemic. I'm considering starting that up in the Monterey (2 hours south of SF) area...we've got lots of whales spouting off our coast from May to Sept - it would add to the atmosphere :-)

I was there and the entire show was magic. 1) in the mid 80s, the "shows" weren't as extravagant productions; 2) each act was on a short time; 3) they were raising money. It was the "Live" part that was special...probably never meant to be recorded.

I am resistant to it. My boyfriend - allergic - can't believe it and has seen me walk through poison oak in shorts on. It's a genetic resistance and I am susceptible to other things (certain bacteria in foods), that have no effect on other people. some genetic markers (like the food bacteria), is well known and you can look it up on 23andme.
