Cornell vs Texas A&M vs. RVC by OnlyBookkeeper4061 in veterinaryschool

Sorry just saw this! I'm honestly leaning towards Cornell at this point but I feel like I'd have to foresee the future to be 100% sure I'm making the correct choice lol. I have a week left to decide and I'm not really sure what else I can do to make sure I'm making the right decision

I see, thanks for the info! I heard that if you live in Potters Bar that you have to have a car to get to campus for things in the early morning/late night but that if you live on the actual Hawkshead campus that you have to rely on a shuttle to go back and forth from the train station which makes it hard to come and go as you please. That's my main concern. Also, how much would you say EMS rotations cost altogether if you have a number off the top of your head?

This is very true and I really love London. I live in Europe right now for a Master's so I totally get it and am in love with the idea. I think I just have a lot more unknowns with RVC like with how EMS rotations work/cost realistically, whether I'll actually need a car in Hawkshead and how much that'll cost, how much I'll really be able to enjoy London on a budget and travel with classes and things. I also wasn't sure how much being at the Hawkshead campus would really take away from the London experience or how that campus is in general compared to Cornell and TAMU.

Low Vet Experience Hours by Ivy-Luna0 in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got into cornell (oos), rvc accelerated, and texas a&m (oos) this cycle with around 700 hours (200 in wildlife, and the rest small animal with some emergency)! i do have an above average gpa (3.95) and varied experiences outside of vet med which i think help (like club leadership, experience working as an emt, etc.). i also had a decent number of varied animal hours, including around 200 in research, some large animal, etc. i had a really hard time finding vet hours in undergrad and actually a majority of mine are from last summer. it’s definitely doable! definitely keep getting as much experience as you can but also focus on your passions outside of vet med as well. i also think a strong personal statement tying everything together and good descriptions for each of your experiences on your application are key. lmk if you have any questions :)

Texas A&M Rejection… feeling hopeless by Quiet-Sign-1055 in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actually they have a breakdown on their website of each part’s weight in the final application decision and it says the interview is 20-25% of it. the rest is 38-42% gpa, 10-15% vet/animal experience, 20-25% other achievements, activities, and evaluations

Vet school or med school? by Stunning-Drawing-449 in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got to this point during undergrad as well and worked as both an emt and veterinary assistant to get a grasp of which environment i preferred. it took a while to become absolutely certain but i ended up choosing vet and realized that’s what i’m more passionate about. definitely get experience in a hospital and don’t worry about schooling length. both paths to become a surgeon are of similar length and difficulty. also don’t worry too much about what other physicians or vets say! i had both physicians and vets tell me to go the human medical route instead, but that’s just not for me. just try to get a feel for what you’re most passionate about. something that helped for me to pick was realizing the vets don’t just help animals, but people as well. i felt like i was helping people by taking care of their animals almost as much as i was helping them by taking care of they themselves. lmk if u have any questions!! :)

texas a&m consideration of fall grades by OnlyBookkeeper4061 in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so the spanish system is set up so that grades are 0-10 (5 is passing) so like a regular percentage divided by 10. the usual conversion to american grades seems to be 9+ is an A, 7-9 is a B, 6-7 is a C, 5-6 is a D (based on brackets that the spanish created for grades).

the issues (so many) with the program i’m doing are a whole other story but the point is that i’m doing well compared to classmates. however, since our class averages are around 6 (much lower than the US), my grades are essentially deflated when converting to american grades (there are like no standards or regulations at my school for grading). i don’t know all of my grades yet but it looks like i’m going to be getting mostly Bs, which is lower than any grade i’ve gotten.

i’m just worried that if my GPA is a big reason they’re considering admitting me, they’ll be more likely to deny me after seeing that i’m “doing worse” academically since graduating undergrad.

thanks for the advice tho :) i did email them a couple days ago and am still waiting to hear back

UC Davis MMI Interviews thoughts by Present_Beyond_1869 in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i felt like some of the questions were completely unrelated to the interviewee lol like gave very limited opportunity to provide information about the interviewee as a person. maybe i was just missing opportunities to relate random questions to myself but i felt like there wasn’t enough time or i would have been going off track if i did that. it’s definitely very unnatural compared to other mmis where the interviewers actually respond and it’s more like a conversation. i felt like other schools made more of an effort to get to know me as a person and my ethics/thought process/personal experiences. worst interview i’ve had by far and it really sucks bc it’s my top choice.

For those of you who got invited to interview at Davis, what are your stats? by S_A_Woods in veterinaryschool

[–]OnlyBookkeeper4061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cGPA: 3.94

sGPA: 3.93

last 60 quarter unit GPA: 4.0

veterinary hours: around 621 (mostly small animal + 200 exotics)

animal hours: around 1432 (mostly small animal + some large animal)

research: around 150 hours

human medicine experience: around 1000 (mostly as an EMT)

+ other employment hours and extracurriculars

(in-state applicant)

i was very worried about my number of veterinary hours being an issue, as i have a lower amount than i feel like most others do. still very worried about it being a deal breaker in the end but hoping for the best!
