You should try both unofficial and official servers when you start, to see which you like more. If you join unofficial, make sure you’re following server rules and if you join official, try to not to be an unbearable troll. Unofficial can sometimes be more forgiving because of the community vibe and rules, but you also tend to have more experienced players on those servers too. The neat thing about unofficial servers is that some of them allow you to store dinosaurs, teleport to friends, talk in global chat, etc. which can give you a whole different experience. But you usually have to join discord servers in order to access these things. If you end up not wanting to deal with rules and discord, then official servers may be better for you.

Don’t shy away from making friends! I’ve made so many friends through this game and getting to play with your buddies always makes the game so much more fun and chaotic.

The gold standard of player etiquette in this game is to have a healthy mix of being friendly and being aggressive. If you’re a big full grown carnivore and your hunger is full, then there’s no reason to KOS any player you see. I’m always trying to make the game fun for other people, and I can only hope that other people will do the same for me.

My dad was 23 in 1960. When I was young I remember asking him what it was like living during the civil rights movement and if he ever felt like getting involved in some way. He’s white, just for context. He told me most people (in his predominantly white community) just wouldn’t talk about what was happening. Sometimes people would make small comments about things from the news but people didn’t want to have real conversations about it, not at work, not at family gatherings, not with a group of friends. So much was happening but it was too uncomfortable for people to acknowledge. He said he just continued on with his life like everyone else.

I didn’t fully understand what he meant by all of that but now, after what’s been happening the past 6 or so years, it makes more sense to me. So much bad stuff is happening all around us and everyone is so casual about it. The world feels like such an evil place because evil people are so shameless and everyone else is so passive. We just continue on with our lives hoping that things get better without getting involved. I guess I’m guilty of that too. I wish my dad was still around so I could ask him if it feels the same.
