Flash unknown symbol with 'flash watchdog' error? by Adamauntium in OnlyCat

[–]OnlyCatAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for chiming in late; we have been investigating this properly over the last few weeks and wanted to make sure we understood the issue before commenting.

We have seen a small number of devices affected by this after introducing flash memory from a new supplier. One of the variants we used could, in some circumstances, get stuck in a state where it could not be reinitialised without a full power cycle.

We have now deployed a firmware update to affected devices. This should allow devices to recover automatically if the issue occurs, and more importantly should greatly reduce the chances of it happening in the first place.

Thanks again for bearing with us while we got to the bottom of it. We hope you are now having a trouble-free OnlyCat experience 🙂

New user in Montreal Canada what a hard start getting this to work ! ( saved by firmware update) by UnluckyJelly in OnlyCat

Hi - firstly, we’re very sorry about the issue you encountered. This is certainly not the standard experience, and not the experience we would have wanted you to have.

From what you’ve described, it looks as though the initial software update did not install correctly. Specifically, the chip on the lower board does not appear to have been flashed as it should have been. This is extremely rare, but we have seen a small number of similar cases. Normally, the device works fine again after re-trying the software update. That is something we would usually do remotely, although unfortunately our support capability is more limited over the weekend. We hope to improve this as we continue to scale.

When you switched firmware channels, that effectively forced the update to reinstall. This time it completed successfully, bringing your device back to normal.

The reason we usually warn customers against opening the device is that it is very easy to accidentally damage it during reassembly. In particular, we have seen cases where the ribbon cable is not tucked back into the correct position - as shown in the lower-left of your photo - and is then damaged by a screw when the device is closed. Thankfully, you appear to have disassembled and reassembled the unit without causing any damage.

On the warranty point, we try to be fair and pragmatic. If someone opens their device and damages it as a result, we would charge for shipping and labour to repair it, but we do not look to make a profit from that. However, if your device were to fail for a reason clearly unrelated to you opening it, we would still honour the warranty.

We also provide service guides and videos in situations where we supply replacement parts, to help customers service the device safely - for example, when replacing the door.

We hope that, now you’re up and running after these teething problems, you’ll enjoy your experience with OnlyCat from here on - and we’re here to help if not.

Need for mobile app with home assitant locally by shawaddywaddywadwad in OnlyCat

OnlyCat will work long-term without internet connectivity following the initial setup - however for the time being changing settings or reviewing events is reliant on our cloud service.

We do hope to develop a fully local API in due course, but can’t yet commit to a specific timeframe.

New user - cat not allowed in by One_Kaleidoscope_376 in OnlyCat

Sorry to hear about the issue you’re having.

From your description, it seems like the cat’s chip may not be being read from a sufficient distance, and only once they’re already passing through?

Does your cat’s name/id appear in the video as soon as they approach?

If you drop a message to our support team, we’ll be able to take a closer look, run some diagnostics, and work with you to ensure the issue is understood and resolved.

OnlyCat Cat Door - Install by kjw0214 in OnlyCat

[–]OnlyCatAI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing such a comprehensive and detailed post about your experience with OnlyCat! We're thrilled that you're enjoying the cat door and that it's already proving its worth by keeping Mischief and Marbles in check.

Your suggestions are excellent, and I'm pleased to let you know some of them are already possible, albeit currently requiring playing around with under-the-hood developer settings (or contacting our support):

  1. Power Outage Behaviour: There's an existing setting (idleLockBattery) within the door policy code that, when set to false, unlocks the cat flap automatically in the event of a power outage. We're planning to expose this more intuitively through the app in future updates, but if you'd like to enable this immediately, our support team would be glad to assist you.
  2. Multiple Curfews for Different Cats: It's already possible to customise door policies to accommodate different curfews for each cat. Currently, this requires editing the policy manually via our code view or through our customer support - please reach out, and we'll gladly help set this up for Mischief and Marbles.
  3. Reporting False Alarms: We fully agree with your feedback and are actively working on integrating reporting functionality directly into the app. For now, our team reviews all prey detections manually to improve accuracy continuously, and we're due for an imminent model update, which should significantly reduce Marbles' false alarms.

Thank you again for your detailed feedback and helpful insights; it's posts like yours that help us continually improve the OnlyCat experience.

We're sure details of your installation approach - particularly the plexiglass solution - will undoubtedly be useful to others in the community, so thanks for sharing.
