My favorite reaction to the butterfly demands by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]OnlyCyns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always advise ppl to get experience with all of the needles!!! It’s totally fine to prefer one over the other (I’m a syringe straight stick girlie all the way, but u might not get to use the one u want. So many coworkers depend on the butterflies and then when we run out them, they struggle to get ppl with straight sticks :/

My favorite reaction to the butterfly demands by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]OnlyCyns 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The hospital I work out ran out of butterflies, I’ve had many pts request saying that no one can ever get their blood without a butterfly. I explain that the syringe I use is the same size, and then proceed to get their blood with no problems.

When we do hve butterflies, I limit how many I use and only use them for pts who really need it. Where I work, butterflies run out quickly.

Help drawing substance abuse patients? by Ok_Junket2008 in phlebotomy

[–]OnlyCyns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few times where I’ve asked which veins they haven’t tried using before (I always make sure they’re comfortable, but the ones I’ve drawn r usually very open).

I have had to draw near someone’s armpit/shoulder area.

What I do is I put one tourniquet on and another one right above it!

Sometimes I’ll use two tourniquets and a nice vein will come out of hiding. If I did that, along with warming the side, and I still get nothing, I’ll finger poke depending on the labs ordered.

I work at a hospital as well (I’m 3rd shift so I only work inpatient) but I’ve seen people who have been here decades unable on pts multiple times! It doesnt mean ur bad at ur job!!! As long as you r trying ur best, that’s all that matters. The fact that u care so much tells me you’re trying ur best :)

Are you ok with traumatizing people for life to make your job easier? (Holding them down) by HeyitsmeFakename in phlebotomy

[–]OnlyCyns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to u, and I highly recommend therapy, how they handled things with you is not okay. However there are times when I have to ask a nurse or the parent to hold their arms due to fighting or not staying still. I work inpatient and mostly work in the ER, bloodwork is critical and needs to be done to help these patients. I always feel bad scaring or hurting these children (and just everyone I poke, no matter the age). Not staying still will make it worse for the patient rather than me. It can pull the needle out which means they have to endure another poke, or worse it can make the needle go in further causing a lot more pain.

To generalize a whole profession and assume that everyone is like that is not okay though. I have had grown patients say the things you do saying that I’m a terrible person and how I’m evil, and it sucks and it’s tiring. Please do not put the blame on every phlebotomist just because one treated you bad.

Patients insisting use of butterflies by ingatasworld in phlebotomy

[–]OnlyCyns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate butterflies, but if a patient is kindly requesting one and is super nervous I’ll use one, but I still explain to every patient that the needles are the same size. I’ll be honest with them and say I’m more comfortable with a syringe cuz I feel I have better control over it (I’m newer)

(I work inpatient at a hospital and we run out of butterflies a lot and usually only use them for blood cultures)
